    Publisher's Summary:
This program is read by the author
    An international best seller
Henry Marsh has spent a lifetime operating on the surgical front line. There have been exhilarating highs and devastating lows, but his love for the practice of neurosurgery has never wavered.
Following the publication of his celebrated New York Times best seller Do No Harm, Marsh retired from his full-time job in England to work pro bono in Ukraine and Nepal. In Admissions he describes the difficulties of working in these troubled, impoverished countries and the further insights it has given him into the practice of medicine.
Marsh also faces up to the burden of responsibility that can come with trying to reduce human suffering. Unearthing memories of his early days as a medical student and the experiences that shaped him as a young surgeon, he explores the difficulties of a profession that deals in probabilities rather than certainties and where the overwhelming urge to prolong life can come at a tragic cost for patients and those who love them.
Reflecting on what 40 years of handling the human brain has taught him, Marsh finds a different purpose in life as he approaches the end of his professional career and a fresh understanding of what matters to us all in the end.
    Critic Reviews:
"Consistently entertaining.... Honesty is abundantly apparent here - a quality as rare and commendable in elite surgeons as one suspects it is in memoirists." (
    The Guardian)
"Disarmingly frank storytelling...his reflections on death and dying equal those in Atul Gawande's excellent
    Being Mortal." (
    The Economist)

    Great book
I enjoyed the candor of the authorand very well read also.
There was a very nice mix of medical, human and natural beauty.
    Another wonderful book
I really enjoyed Do No Harm and was pleased to find that Mr Marsh had written - and narrated! - another book. His autobiographical storytelling style reminds me a bit of James Herriot. This follow up did not disappoint. We hear about more of his interesting cases and patient stories and his own thoughts and feelings relating to those cases, and learn about Nepal, and what happened in Ukraine. Perhaps because its exactly what Id like to do myself, I found myself wishing for a picture or two of the little cottage by the canal that the author is renovating (impractical for an audiobook :-) )
    My Favorite of 2017!
Thoughtful and honest about his failures and successes as a surgeon and unfailingly compassionate toward his patients. Narration by the author is a plus. Enjoyed all the idiosyncrasies of British pronunciation!
Loved the book, but hated the narration.
The book was great, but the narration was done by an old man, and was very hard to understand due to hoarseness .. As a non native english speaker I never had difficult in an audiobook, but this book I almost stopped and returned due to this ..I understand the point of having an old man narrating a book of lifetime stories, but it should be easier - I could not listen to this in any noisy environment because it was impossible to understand .. Sad that such a good book was narrated so poorly ..

    great
moving and very good. would recommend to anyone. Will probably read again too!! loved it
    Too much descriptive narrative
I realize that good writers need to paint a picture but this book was like the author was trying to paint the Sistine Chapel! I got through 1 1/2 chapters but couldnt take any more of the writer describing the patient' soccer shirts and varsity letters. Way too much! Returned it for a refund so I could buy a book with substance, not creative writing class descriptions.

    Title: Finding Magic
    Subtitle: A Spiritual Memoir
    Author: Sally Quinn
    Narrator: Sally Quinn
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 12 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-12-17
    Publisher: Harper Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 22 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The author, journalist, television commentator, and longtime Washington insider reflects on the spiritual quest that has brought deeper meaning to her life - and kept her grounded within the high-powered political world of Washington, DC's elite - her renowned writing career, her celebrity marriage, and her legendary role as doyenne of the capital's social scene.
In this emotionally involving, illuminating memoir, the legendary Washington Post journalist and author talks candidly about her life at the white-hot center of power and the surprising spiritual quest that has driven her for more than half a century.
While working as a reporter, caring for a learning-disabled son with her husband, longtime Washington Post executive editor Benjamin Bradlee, reigning over the capital's social scene, and remaining intimately connected with national politics, Sally Quinn yearned to understand what truly made the world - and her life - tick. After years of searching, most of which occurred in the secular capital of the world, she came to realize that the time she spent with friends and family - the evenings of shared hospitality and intimate fellowship - provided spiritual nourishment and that this theme has been woven into all the most important moments of her life.
In this spiritual memoir, Quinn speaks frankly about her varied, provocative spiritual experiences - from her Southern family of Presbyterians and psychics to voodoo lessons from her Baptist nanny; her trials as a hospitalized military kid in Japan as the Korean War begins; her adventures as a Post reporter and columnist; her experience as one of the first female news anchors on national television; her battles with the Nixon administration, Watergate, and other scandals that have rocked the nation; her courtship with and long marriage to one of the most authoritative figures in the media; her role as the capital's most influential hostess; and her growing fascination with religious issues. This fascination led to her pioneering work in creating the most visited religious site on the web, OnFaith.co, where she reports on the unseen driving force of American life.
Throughout this radiant, thoughtful, and surprisingly intimate memoir, Quinn reveals how "it's all magic" - the many forms of what draws us together and provides meaning to all we do.

    Title: Taking Aim

Author: A. J. Gregory, Eva Shockey
    Narrator: Eva Shockey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-29-17
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 50 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
An acclaimed bow hunter who defies the stereotype that hunting is a man's game, Eva Shockey is a TV and social media phenomenon at the forefront of a new wave of women and girls who are passionate about outdoor sports.
Eva Shockey grew up expecting to be a dancer like her glamorous mother. But something about spending family vacations RV-ing across North America and going on hunts with her dad sparked in her an enduring passion for a different way of life.
In Taking Aim, Eva tells a very personal story of choosing the less-traveled path to a rewarding life in outdoor pursuits like hunting and fishing. For her, as her millions of fans can attest, that has meant hunting as a way of harvesting food, caring deeply about conservation, sustainability and healthy eating, and getting closer to God in nature.
In this riveting memoir for the adventurer in all of us, Eva takes listeners along as she hunts caribou on the rugged Aleutian Islands, tracks a 1500-pound bull moose across the unforgiving Yukon, and meets many other challenges of a life in the wild.
Along the way we learn that hunting is about so much more than pulling a trigger. "My story is about discovering your dream," writes Eva. "It's about following your passion, mastering your skills, taking aim no matter who thinks you're crazy...and then letting the arrow fly. If you've done all you can, I can tell you that you're almost certain to hit your mark."
Whether you're a lifelong hunter or a city dweller who has never set foot in the wilderness, Eva's story delivers an empowering message about rejecting stereotypes and expectations, believing in yourself, and finding the courage to pursue what you care about most.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this sprightly, instructive autobiography, Shockey describes her love of hunting...She details the hours-long hikes, the cheek-chafing cold, the patience ('hair-pulling stretches of monotony'), and the constant practicing required to 'harvest' that 1500-pound bull moose. She endures antiwoman and antihunting attitudes, defending hunting as an act of conservation, self-reliance, and, often, charity." (
    Publishers Weekly)
"I have had the privilege of knowing Eva Shockey for years as colleagues in the outdoor industry, and am thrilled for her voice and perspective is reaching a larger audience.
Taking Aim offers fresh perspective that appeals to both the lifelong hunter and non-hunter alike. Eva's voice gives insider understanding to readers for which the outdoor industry is a world yet undiscovered. Simultaneously, she speaks to the heart of every avid outdoorsman as she recounts stories of risky exploration and its rich rewards. Hunter or not,
Taking Aim is for you." (Willie Robertson, author, American fisherman, and hunter)
"Throughout this book Eva mentions the impact her family has had on her education and passion for the outdoors. I have three little girls, and another child on the way, that my wife and I are raising to appreciate, enjoy and love the outdoors as much as we do.

    Title: Reading with Patrick
    Subtitle: A Teacher, a Student, and a Life-Changing Friendship
    Author: Michelle Kuo
    Narrator: Michelle Kuo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-11-17
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 33 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A memoir of race, inequality, and the power of literature told through the life-changing friendship between an idealistic young teacher and her gifted student, jailed for murder in the Mississippi Delta.
Recently graduated from Harvard University, Michelle Kuo arrived in the rural town of Helena, Arkansas, as a Teach for America volunteer, bursting with optimism and drive. But she soon encountered the jarring realities of life in one of the poorest counties in America, still disabled by the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. In this stirring memoir, Kuo, the child of Taiwanese immigrants, shares the story of her complicated but rewarding mentorship of one student, Patrick Browning, and his remarkable literary and personal awakening.
Convinced she can make a difference in the lives of her teenage students, Michelle Kuo puts her heart into her work, using quiet reading time and guided writing to foster a sense of self in students left behind by a broken school system. Though Michelle loses some students to truancy and even gun violence, she is inspired by some, such as Patrick. Fifteen and in the eighth grade, Patrick begins to thrive under Michelle's exacting attention. However, after two years of teaching, Michelle feels pressure from her parents and the draw of opportunities outside the Delta and leaves Arkansas to attend law school.
Then, on the eve of her law-school graduation, Michelle learns that Patrick has been jailed for murder. Feeling that she left the Delta prematurely and determined to fix her mistake, Michelle returns to Helena and resumes Patrick's education - even as he sits in a jail cell awaiting trial. Every day for the next seven months, they pore over classic novels, poems, and works of history. Little by little Patrick grows into a confident, expressive writer and a dedicated reader galvanized by the works of Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, Walt Whitman, W. S. Merwin, and others. In her time reading with Patrick, Michelle is herself transformed, contending with the legacy of racism and the questions of what constitutes a "good" life and what the privileged owe to those with bleaker prospects.
Reading with Patrick is an inspirational story of friendship, a coming-of-age story of both a young teacher and a student, a deeply resonant meditation on education, race, and justice in the rural South, and a love letter to literature and its power to transcend social barriers.
    Critic Reviews:
"I delighted in this book and read it in a single weekend.
Reading with Patrick is a significant work that could swell the ranks of highly motivated and qualified teachers - people who understand they are not just transferring information but transforming lives." (Bill Moyers)
    "In
Reading with Patrick, Michelle Kuo takes on the subjects of race, privilege, and the debt that the human community owes to its most disadvantaged members with a bracing intelligence, honesty, and self-scrutiny. This is a gorgeous, urgent, and heartbreaking memoir." (Darcy Frey, senior lecturer on English, Harvard University, and author of
    The Last Shot)
    "Riveting...
Reading with Patrick is an essential addition to our national conversation about institutional racism. It is also an empathic story of connection: between a dedicated teacher and her student, between history and our current times, and between literature and life.

Title: Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes
Subtitle: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle
    Author: Daniel L. Everett
    Narrator: Daniel Everett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-06-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 32 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Daniel Everett, then a Christian missionary, arrived among the Pirah in 1977 - with his wife and three young children - intending to convert them. What he found was a language that defies all existing linguistic theories and reflects a way of life that evades contemporary understanding. The Pirah have no counting system and no fixed terms for color. They have no concept of war or of personal property. They live entirely in the present. Everett became obsessed with their language and its cultural and linguistic implications, and with the remarkable contentment with which they live - so much so that he eventually lost his faith in the God he'd hoped to introduce to them. Over three decades, Everett spent a total of seven years among the Pirah, and his account of this lasting sojourn is an engrossing exploration of language that questions modern linguistic theory. It is also an anthropological investigation, an adventure story, and a riveting memoir of a life profoundly affected by exposure to a different culture. Written with extraordinary acuity, sensitivity, and openness, it is fascinating from first to last, rich with unparalleled insight into the nature of language, thought, and life itself.
    Critic Reviews:
"Rich account of fieldwork among a tribe of hunter-gatherers in Brazil.... Everett's experiences and findings fairly explode from these pages and will reverberate in the minds of readers." (
    Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
    A Profound Read
I give most of the books I listen too five stars because they are good books. I would like to give this book at least six since it is exceptionally insightful. This book contains a stories about life in the Amazon, Everett and his family adjusting to living in a village and the dangers everyone in that location encounters. Mostly this is a book introducing the reader to a new language and culture. Everett's main proposed theory of language is that to fully understand a language you have understand the cultural context it came from. As a result we are shown a culture radically different from ours. Attached to this is a distinct way to think, different from the way westerners are used to thinking. Everything about this book was profound. Certainly worth the read.
    Hear Pirah
Read by Daniel Everett himself you really get to appreciate the use of pitch, tones, rhythm, and other nuances in the Pirah's unique language. You also can hear his feelings as he reads particularly emotional parts. Touching and surprisingly funny this is an amazing work.
    fascinating book
extremely fascinating book I had a similar Journey to the authors Journey, at least in regards to being a member of s i l and having a faith migration. My only recommendation the readers is that you might want to skip some of the linguistics part switch get somewhat dense. but it is a fascinating book
    Great book
This book was fantastic. I like the way it was written starting from its style of organization, to its engaging plot, to its main argument against the Chomkian point of view. I believe that the writer has put great evidence to support his theory stating that language is not innate but rather a cultural tool created by humans.
A linguistic journey into the nature of existence
A journey into the heart of being through the study of linguistics. At times I found the passages using the native language a bit dry and repetitive.

    Publisher's Summary:
Holly FitzGerald and her husband, Fitz - married less than two years - set out on a yearlong honeymoon adventure of a lifetime, backpacking around the world. Five months into the trip, their plane crash-lands in Peru at a penal colony walled in by jungle, and their blissfully romantic journey turns into a terrifying nonstop labyrinth of escape and survival.
On a small, soon-ravaged raft that quickly becomes their entire universe through dangerous waters alive with deadly animals and fish, their only choice: to continue on despite the rush of insects swarming them by day, the sounds of encroaching predators at night. Without food or means of communication, with no one to hear their cries for help or on a search-and-rescue expedition to find them, the author and her husband make their way, fighting to conquer starvation and navigate the brute force of the river, their only hope for survival, in spite of hunger and weakening resolve, to somehow, miraculously, hang on and find their way east to a large riverside town - before it is too late.
    Critic Reviews:
"Both travel memoir and shocking adventure story, like a real-life Survivor or Naked and Afraid.... A powerful story about survival, love, and faith in the face of impossible odds.... Unputdownable...absolutely fascinating." (Katie Lawrence, Library Journal)
"Vivid and consistently compelling.... An absorbing tale of survival, love, and the generosity of people who helped save their lives." (Kirkus Reviews)
"A detailed, high-stakes debut memoir...FitzGerald weaves in the stories from their past with palpable, evocative details of their daily struggles with starvation, strong currents, and despair, all while the couple's love, self-knowledge, and faith deepen.... Recommended for fans of survival narratives, coming-of-maturity stories, and travelogues from off the beaten path." (Louisa Whitfield-Smith, Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Narration is off
The narrator makes this resilient woman & protagonist often sounds childlike/naive as opposed to what the story conveys - thoughtful and strong. This is a frustrating as the listener.
    Disappointed!
I was SO looking forward to the availability of this book. What a fascinating premise. The story is very good, but the narrator ruined it. Her little girl, breathy voice changed the entire dynamic of the story. And, to add further annoyance to the listener, she articulated every syllable in a peculiar, grating affectation: Short e became a (neck/nack, bread/ brad, death/dath,...). Then, short a became o (raft/roft, match/motch). Short i became e (this/thes, kiss/kess, fish/fesh). Excellent opportunity missed here, Audible.
Incredible journey of courage and faith
I personally know Holly and Fitz and although they told us what happened after they came Back it never registered as it did listening to this incredible journey by Holly. Holly is an excellent writer just as Fitz is an excellent writer and poet and I am so proud to know them to be able to call them my friends. And the reader did a great job as I teared up at least three or four times throughout the book.

    What a story!!!
I have read many addiction memoirs & this is by far the most intriguing, exciting, & helpful books I have ever read. I absolutely loved this story & believe many other people will to! I will most definitely be suggesting this to my friends and family. Truly AMAZING.
    Fantastic
Im a nurse and see addiction daily. Im also a believer in God and the straight n narrow!!!! Wonderful wonderful book.
    Gangster
Best book I've ever listened to. Crazy story that everyone should hear. Rags to riches
    Decent book.
While I respect Kahlil for finally getting clean, I think most people wouldn't have the same luxuries or resources he did to assist him in doing so. Most people don't have a Malibu nearby, loaded with rich people. Put Kahlil in South Philadelphia and I imagine his recovery story is a little different.
Oh, and that crap Robbie was spitting out near the end of the book is complete textbook BS. THAT was his sponsor?!?
    Jails, Institutions & (almost) Death
Jails, Institutions and Death is a term oft recited by members of Narcotics Anonymous when describing the inevitable destination of a person in active addiction. I hungrily consume addiction memoirs in that way that people feel compelled to slow down and peer at a horrible accident. Some might think this is a character flaw, but I think of it more as a gratitude check--"There, but for the grace of God, go I".
"I Forgot to Die" doesn't disappoint. It is the story of a man who should be dead. It is the story of a man who wanted to die and tried to kill himself on the time payment plan of addiction.
Khalil Rafati tells a story that is sad, but not that unusual. His father was verbally and emotionally abusive, his mother was devoid of a spine and unable to defend him. His childhood home was a cold, unfriendly, unsafe place--the kind that often breeds psychopaths. Khalil was not a psychopath, in fact, he more resembles an empath in his account.
In his addiction, which was severe and life-threatening, he was abusive to the people closest to him, but that is true for most addicts. At other times, he expressed love and gratitude for the people in his life who reached out to help him. Some were enablers who only prolonged his nightmare, but others were angels of mercy.
All recovering addicts are miracles, but Khalil's story stands out. He was a boy, then a man who invested all of his energy in trying to be comfortable in his own skin.

With one of the most recognized voices in sports broadcasting, he is a tireless perfectionist when it comes to preparing and delivering his commentary. Yet he knows that some of sports' greatest triumphs - and life's greatest rewards - come from those unscripted moments you never anticipated.

Get to knw the man behind the scenes.
Ernie Johnson deserves an award for this book. You don't want to miss out on the incredible journey of faith, family and fun that he has been blessed to unpack. to the listener. The life lessons that his dad and wife have taught him are a highlight for sure. What a treat! I was particularly impressed and grateful to have been given the opportunity to hear about his family. The joys and the pains amidst the twists and turns that unexpectedly helped him place his faith in God, the Father. It' is truly satisfying to hear that from a man of integrity and humility. You would have never have guessed it by just hearing his voice, or seeing him on TNT's Inside the NBA. After reading/listening to this book, I have come to recognize that he's a gifted author, writer/poet sportscaster, husband, father and friend. This is a book that I really enjoyed listening to. The audible narration is loud and clear. He keeps his emotions in check. Even though there are some truly heartfelt moments where you want to shed a tear. The way he thrills you with those important milestones in his life. And how he inspires you as you read is amazing in its own right. To God be the glory. There's nothing crass, immature or off putting in his book. He simply tells it like it is. Finally, "Unscripted: The Unpredictable Moments That Make Life Extraordinary is a "blackberry moment" that should not be missed. Great job, Ernie!
    Enjoyable audiobook
Although I was familiar with Ernie Johnson as a broadcaster for Turner sports, I really didn't know anything else about him. I saw him do an interview on TV where his book was referenced. am glad I was able to listen to it. It was worth the time.
    Great
Ernie gives a heartfelt message of his familys life story and the pros and cons along the way.

A debut collection of fierce, funny essays about growing up the daughter of Indian immigrants in Western culture, addressing sexism, stereotypes, and the universal miseries of life.
This program is read by the author
In One Day We'll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter, Scaachi Koul deploys her razor-sharp humor to share all the fears, outrages, and mortifying moments of her life. She learned from an early age what made her miserable, and for Scaachi anything can be cause for despair, whether it's a shopping trip gone awry, enduring awkward conversations with her bikini waxer, overcoming her fear of flying while vacationing halfway around the world, dealing with Internet trolls, or navigating the fears and anxieties of her parents.
Alongside these personal stories are pointed observations about life as a woman of color: where every aspect of her appearance is open for critique, derision, or outright scorn; where strict gender rules bind in both Western and Indian cultures, leaving little room for a woman not solely focused on marriage and children to have a career (and a life) for herself.
With a sharp eye and biting wit, incomparable rising star and cultural observer Scaachi Koul offers a hilarious, scathing, and honest look at modern life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Certain authors are their own best narrators...Here, Koul's accomplished reading comes with the bonus of regular vocal interjections from her father." (

    So here's the thing...
Overall, it's a great story; it really opened my eyes to prejudices I never gave much thought to. Being the daughter of immigrants and also having immigrated to North America from overseas, I could also relate to some experiences and thoughts. HOWEVER, Scaachi's voice was so dull and monotone that, were the story uninteresting, I would've returned it. Memoirs don't need to be read in such a dull manner -- listen to Kevin Hart's for inspiration.
    I personally did not enjoy
The reader claimed she didn't even know what she was writing. Felt like I was listening to white noise. Not for me but that is my personal opinion.
