Great step by step guide with outstanding tips
Every time I open my mouth in front of an audience, not matter how much experience I have, I get nervous.
Jan, in her book, has been able to distil the essence of what speaking is about. I found chapter 5 '12 secrets for giving a terrific speech' of particular value. In these 12 points she reminded me of the reson why I speak, that what I have to say is of value and the audience really does want to hear what I have to say. Keeping these in mind really helps me reduce the nervousness I get without needing to opt for a valium.
Being a member of the National Speakers Association in Australia I must admit to thinking 'not another book on public speaking'. Jan has delivered a well structured and complee step by step guide which, if followed, will help any person who has a neeed to stand up and speak in fron of an audience. She addressess the top 12 challenges amd provdes exccellent strategies to help you overcome (or manage).
Finally Jan provides some excellent resources to help you prepare.
One thing a book cannot do is record you and provide feedback. If you are planning to become a professional speaker you will need a speech coch - sooner than later.
This book, however, is a fantastic resource to get you started.
