Publisher's Summary:

A spectacular collection of classic ghost stories from some of the masters of spooky fiction.

And over 20 more gripping ghost stories.

Members Reviews:

Sound Quality is Too Soft

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The stories are good, but the speaker is hard to understand. Voice is lovely, but it is soft and often difficult to understand.

What did you like best about this story?

Classic, spooky stories.

What three words best describe Cathy Dobsons performance?

Voice is lovely, but she is often difficult to understand. Had to turn volume all the way up, and could follow along, but not easily.

Was The Great Ghost Story Collection worth the listening time?

Yes, I just wish she would speak louder and clearer.

Narrator's style not right for the content

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The book might have been for me if only the way it was read didn't get in the way. My mood was totally affected by the narration style to the point where I couldn't assess the stories.

Would you recommend The Great Ghost Story Collection to your friends? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend this reading to anyone unless they were about 5-7 years old in which case it might be perfect.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cathy Dobson?

Doug Bradley

What character would you cut from The Great Ghost Story Collection?

Not an appropriate question for a book of stories

Any additional comments?

I couldn't finish listening to this. Cathy Dobson reads as if narrating a funny fairy story to a class of 6-year-olds. In fact she would be perfect for children's stories but her style, although not unskillful, ruins the mood of these stories for me and makes them all seem faintly comical.

The narrator ruins this

The stories are fine, but the performance is utterly dreadful. Ms. Dobson has an amateurish sing-song quality that makes each story sound alike. Hard to believe they're passing this off as a professional job and charging real money for it.

ONE RECORDING: 25 or more "Collections of...."

RED DOOR AUDIOBOOKS : Having recorded 48 hours of short stories read by Cathy Dobson, why not use the same content (over and over again) to produce Collections like this one? While it's a great strategy for the production company, the listener and consumer gets a rough deal. Spending $80 is your choice, but take a look at the other Collections first.

And Dobson's narration is rather bland, especially compared with other unabridged versions from various sources.

Couldn't stand the reader's dreary voice

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Another reader. I could only stand her for one and a half stories.

Critic Reviews:

"Northanger Abbey är Austens mest litterära bok, full av anspelningar p den tidens poesi, prosa och historieskrivning. Berättaren pekar p romangenrens spelregler, leker med dem och skrattar t dem." (Sara Danius, Dagens Nyheter)

"Northanger Abbey är p mnga sätt den mest uppsluppna av Jane Austens romaner, men är i grund och botten en allvarlig och osentimental kommentar om kärlek och äktenskap i 1800-talets England." (Alix Wilber, Penguin)

Plus 40 other macabre stories.

Members Reviews:

A really great selection of stories

Would you listen to Macabre Tales again? Why?

yes but in small increments a story or two at a time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Since this is a story collection its not a relevant question.

Did Cathy Dobson do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I had trouble staying focused during Ms. Dobson's narration to be honest. She has a lovely voice with a rich timbre but for some reason I could not stay focused and found myself having to rewind frequently because I would zone out during the listening session.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

no

The first collection of shorts I have bought on audible and enjoyed everyone. Some I have read before as they are quite popular but this was well narrated and a great mix of terror, creepy, disturbing and scary. Loved it!

Members Reviews:

Great tales spoiled by the wrong narrator

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No

What did you like best about this story?

Buchan writes accessible and exciting stories

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Cathy Dobson?

Someone with a more appropriate voice, or at least tone. Cathy sounded like she was reading for a childrens group. The stories needed more gravity.
