Riepilogo Editore:

Title: Oblomov [Russian Edition]

Author: Ivan Goncharov

Narrator: Vyacheslav Gerasimov

Format: Unabridged

Length: 17 hrs and 23 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-02-11

Publisher: New Internet Technologies

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes

Genres: Classics, World Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Oblomov is the best known novel by Russian writer Ivan Goncharov, first published in 1859. Oblomov is also the central character of the novel, often seen as the ultimate incarnation of the superfluous man, a symbolic character in 19th-century Russian literature. Oblomov was compared to Shakespeare's Hamlet as answering "No!" to the question "To be or not to be?" Oblomov is a young, generous nobleman who seems incapable of making important decisions or undertaking any significant actions. Throughout the novel he rarely leaves his room or bed and famously fails to leave his bed well into the novel. The book was considered a satire of Russian nobility whose social and economic function was increasingly in question in mid-19th century Russia.

Title: The Devil's Pool

Author: George Sand

Narrator: Victoria Bradley

Format: Unabridged

Length: 3 hrs and 34 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-24-17

Publisher: Audioliterature

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Classics, World Literature

Publisher's Summary:

"The Devil's Pool" (1846) is a novel about the life of the French peasants by George Sand.

Excerpt: "I knew the young man and the beautiful child; I knew their history, for they had a history. Although but a peasant and a laborer, Germain had always been aware of his duties and affections. He had related them to me clearly and ingenuously, and I had listened with interest. After some time spent in watching him plow, it occurred to me that I might write his story, though that story were as simple, as straightforward, and unadorned as the furrow he was tracing.

Next year that furrow will be filled and covered by a fresh one. Thus disappear most of the footprints made by man in the field of human life. A little earth obliterates them, and the furrows we have dug succeed one another like graves in a cemetery. I mean, if possible, to save from oblivion the furrow of Germain, the skilled husbandman. He will never know nor care, but I shall take pleasure in my talk."

Title: The Cossacks

Author: Leo Tolstoy

Narrator: Jonathan Oliver

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 2 mins

Language: English

Release date: 02-19-10

Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 18 votes

Genres: Classics, World Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Dissolute, disenchanted Dmitri Olénin decides to join the army as a cadet and is despatched to the Caucasus. There, he is transformed by seeing how the indigenous people live in harmony with nature, how their lives have more meaning than those of the superficial social elite in Moscow, and he finds a new sense of self and purpose. But nothing is ever quite that simple.

Love and loyalty are tested to the very limits in this semi-autobiographical novella, which is one of Tolstoys best-loved works.

Editorial Reviews:

Tolstoy's novella tells how a young, aristocratic Russian, doing military service among the Cossacks in the Caucasus, learns about life, love, and himself, upsetting his previous notions. Jonathan Oliver performs, rather than reads, varying the voices adeptly from person to person and among men and women, matching speech to how it's described, providing the proper expression and emotions. His voice is strong; he's best at Cossack men, especially the rambunctious Daddy Eroshka. The use of strong British accents to represent Russian accents, while reasonable for a British production, may strike American listeners as odd - but it's the best way to go, and the distraction passes. This is an able narration of a fine, subtle work.
