    Title: New Lives for Old
    Author: Ernest Holmes
    Narrator: John Marino
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-27-17
    Publisher: Majestic

    Publisher's Summary:
Would you like to trade in your old car for a new model without any extra expense to yourself? Or would you like to refurnish your home? Wouldn't it be strange if your car or home could remodel themselves so that nothing about them could wear out? This sounds kind of fantastic, doesn't it? And yet, we are told that none of us is more than a year old physically, that our entire body is renewed every year.
If we would inquire into the possibility of rejuvenation, perhaps this thing called "life" has already provided the solution - giving us new bodies for old as we travel along the pathway of life. But what about the mind? It is now becoming accepted, in some groups, that the mind does not grow old - that the mind of a man at 90 is as young as a boy of 10. While maturity slows it down somewhat - at the same time, there is no reason to believe that the mind really ages.

  • If You Tame Me Audiobook by Leslie Irvine
Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
    Title: If You Tame Me
Subtitle: Understanding Our Connection with Animals
    Author: Leslie Irvine
    Narrator: Anna Crowe
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-13-17
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Nearly everyone who cares about dogs or cats knows that they have a sense of self that renders them unique. Yet traditional science and philosophy declare such feelings irrational and anthropomorphic. Animals, they say, have only the crudest form of thought and no sense of self at all. Leslie Irvine's If You Tame Me challenges these entrenched views by demonstrating that our experience of animals and their behavior tell a different story. In particular, dogs and cats have been significant elements in human history and valued members of our households for centuries. Why do we regard these companions as having distinct personalities and as being irreplaceable? Irvine looks closely at how people form connections with dogs and cats available for adoption in a shelter and reflects on her own relationships with animals. If You Tame Me makes a persuasive case for the existence of a sense of self in companion animals and calls upon us to reconsider our rights and obligations regarding the non-human creatures in our lives.
The book is published by Temple University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"The book will also most certainly inspire animal lovers, who will gain more understanding about cats and dogs." (Anthrozoos)
"This volume is an important contribution to the recent explosion of sociological analyses of the roles of animals in human life." (The American Journal of Sociology)
"I learned much from reading this excellent book. I wish it a long life!" (Jeffrey Masson, author of When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals)

    Five Stars
    A great book.
    Awesome Book
This book is awesome and I love it because I want to open a nonprofit animal shelter and do my dissertation on canine behavior and my epistemology teacher said this cannot be related to scientific theory. Well Leslie Irvine proved her wrong!!! Thank you MS. Irvine for such a wonderful book! Read it in a couple of days!:)

    Thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable
Sociologist Dr Leslie Irvine's If You Tame Me is a very important and inspiring book. It will be of great interest to all who love animals and are concerned about their welfare. If you sense a kinship with nonhuman animals and the natural world, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is very well-written and well researched. It takes many of the assumptions that we commonly make about the animal "other" and skilfully dismantles them to reveal pernicious social constructs that should stimulate us all to be more cognizant of how we treat other species. I couldn't put it down!
    Another GOOD BOOK!
This is a book highly recommended by people in the know about living with animals. I wish there was a book like this about humans.
    Wonderfully inspiring read
Leslie Irvine's voice provides those in animal science, animal welfare and just plan animal lovers with a new insight into the psychological relationship of the human-animal bond. A compelling theoretical read with real-life examples. A must have in any animal welfare/animal social policy or human-animal bond literature.

    Riepilogo Editore:

    Publisher's Summary:
Anyone, as Freud tells us in "Reflections on War and Death", forced to react against his own impulses may be described as a hypocrite, whether he is conscious of it or not. One might even venture to assert - it is still Freud's argument - that our contemporary civilization favors this sort of hypocrisy and that there are more civilized hypocrites than truly cultured persons, and it is even a question whether a certain amount of hypocrisy is not indispensable to maintain civilization.

    Narrator's affect is truly depressing..
Freud is great but the narrator's voice makes me want to kill myself! Perhaps he was chosen by a non English-speaking person. Sorry Mr. Wittkower but who knows how many lives have been lost because of your instrument! Actually, if you turn the read speed to 1.25 it's much better, even though it may always be said, war and death is a good reason to feel depressed.

    Length: 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-16-17
    Publisher: IntroBooks
    Genres: Nonfiction, Economics
    Publisher's Summary:
A frequently asked question is what makes a country richer than the others. How could some countries be so flourished where technology has reached a zenith and continues to improve while some countries still struggle to get a basic Internet connection? For years economists have tried to get into the depth, seeking for answers which seem to be warped. There are different points and conditions that help in a country to be more developed and better in economic conditions than the others. Culture, political conditions, geophysical location on the globe, natural calamities, society, and natural resources are some of them. The fact on how rich a country is can be determined by its gross domestic product or GDP per capita at nominal values. Countries compete amongst each other to reach the frontline in the long race of progress and development and to be the number one in the world. The list of the richest countries tends to change every year depending on how much luck, nature, and politicians have helped in keeping them ahead of everyone.

  • Square One Audiobook by Steve Patterson

    Title: Square One
    Subtitle: The Foundations of Knowledge
    Author: Steve Patterson
    Narrator: Steve Patterson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-04-17
    Publisher: Steve Patterson
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
"Truth is discoverable. I'm certain of it. It's not popular to say. It's not popular to think. But I know it's true."
So begins an examination into the most fundamental questions in philosophy. Does objective truth exist? Can we know anything with certainty? Are there true logical contradictions?
Steve Patterson answers emphatically, "We can know absolute, certain, and objective truths. These truths serve as the foundation for the rest of our knowledge."
Square One is an examination of knowledge, logic, and the extreme skepticism that permeates modern thinking. It contains several refutations to popular attacks on human reason, including a resolution to the Liar's Paradox.
Patterson writes in an easy-to-hear, non-academic style. There's no jargon or long-winded pontificating about ideas that don't matter. This audiobook is a response to those who insist, "Truth cannot be known."
    Members Reviews:
An introduction to the foundations of cognition
Square One does exactly what it sets out to do: demonstrate that all knowledge stems from the inscrutable certainty that things are the way they are, and the rest is just clarifying exactly what that means.
I'm very familiar with the laws of logic and identity, and I have to admit that for the first few chapters I was wondering if I was going to get anything new from this short book. By the end though, I found many of Patterson's illustrations and arguments sufficiently illuminating that I feel my understanding of something I thought was very familiar to now be enhanced. I particularly like Patterson's insistence that everything which appears to be a logical contradiction is actually just semantic imprecision.
Ideally, Square One would work best as an introduction to a longer series of the application of logic. Perhaps there is a Square Two in the works where we learn how to apply reason to our observations in a scientific manner, but on its own it still works for the foundation of cognition. The writing is never overly academic or posturing for the run-of-the-mill non-academic philosopher. Use the lessons contained here to help the young intellectuals in your life build the branches and leaves of their worldview from a trunk of certainty and intellectual honesty.
