Opens the mind

Very thought-provoking. There was really little new i.e., the ideas all made sense and were relevant and timely, but having them spelled out and individually pointed out did make one think and potentially cause mental discomfort. It emphasized that even when you make the "right" decision, it is often NOT without consequence emotionally, and what's "right" for you may or may not be defendable in general and in all situations. DEFINITELY thought-provoking

It is so difficult to think rationally about anything in today's American political climate. This book is a breath of fresh reasoning. Very much appreciated, highly recommended.

Amazing food for thought

This is a rather comprehensive and detailed account of our concept of freedom, how there is more a delusion of freedom in modern society and lastly how to create freedom.

Well, to be honest, I don't know whether the title was chosen wisely. It implies an easy step-by-step guide, which I'm not sure we're getting here.

But what we're getting is brilliant. There are too many chapters to mention specifically all that is contained here. Highlights include myth-busting of the banking crisis, of euphemistic rhetoric, of mass manipulation, corporate greed and how all these things contribute to take more freedom from the many and give it to the few.

While this may sound like a conspiracy theory and left-wing anti-capitalism, it's far from it. Regardless of ideology, those mechanisms work and serve those in power.

Ultimately, it provides information with credible facts and data, only trying to give us the knowledge and understanding so we can make more informed decisions and stop being lied to and manipulated.

I think in times of Trump and Media moguls we all know how truth can become a commodity, as much as humans and nature have become commodities.

This book was an eye-opener for me, re-inforced some believes and taught me new things.

The message goes far beyond the political and I can only urge you to read this.

Irritating 5th form diatribe

Veers between brutalist Skinnerian behaviourism and Fotherington-Tomas style hullo trees hullo sky let everyone out of jail and give them a money and we'll all live happily ever after. Narrator sounds like he is having trouble summoning the will to keep going with out sniggering and adopts a quite sarcastic tone. Give him that much credit: it's more than I managed. Far better efforts around from Yuvral Harari, Robert Putnam or Matt Taibbi. Meanwhile I'll have the credit back for something else.

An excellent initial exposition meanders over time

The core concept of this book is very strong and its initial sections are excellent. The main elements of the position are well articulated and the alignment with common sense is well drawn, but Martinez veers quite strongly into a view of the world and society which is more heavily ideological than strictly linked to the overarching theory.

An Outline of Philosophy, by Bertrand Russell; similarly brisk and authoritative.

What didnt you like about Lori L. Parkers performance?

She doesn't understand the material; she reads typos without changing them, even though it's obvious how to change them; and she makes spittle sounds all the time; no respect for the material, no understanding of it; did not edit.

That explanation is continuity-restoration and that, given this veritable tautology, all of the usual skepticism is so much tom-foolery.

Excellent reading of Plato's Banquet, in French

This sensitive and intelligent reading of Plato's famous dialogue on love is entirely in French.

It is an excellent French lesson for intermediate to advanced French learners who can read along with any standard French (or even English) translation to better follow the French.

The Banquet is Plato's exposition, in dialog form, of his theory of love which has influenced Western Civilization more profoundly than almost any other work. (Nietzsche said even of Christianity that it "is warmed over Platonism for the masses.")

Such great and disparate writers as Saint Augustine, Hafiz and Cervantes were deeply influenced by Plato. The philosophy depicted in The Banquet permeates Western Civilization so completely that you will think you are reading a modern book about love. You are: the great classic works are as modern as their newest translations!
