Dabei erfährt der Hörer viel Neues und erhält Anregungen, sein eigenes Leben einmal gegen den Strich zu denken.

Das Hörbuch präsentiert viele Erkenntnisse aus Psychologie und Philosophie verständlich und sehr unterhaltsam. Precht spricht sein eigenes Hörbuch mit angenehmer Stimme und einer wohl dosierten Prise Humor. Auch Caroline Mart eignet sich als Sprecherin hervorragend. Der warme Ton ihrer Stimme und die ausgesuchte Betonung machen das Hören zu einer Freude. Auch die Musik auf dem Hörbuch ist sehr gut gewählt und unterteilt die 6 Stunden und 23 Minuten in erbauliche Häppchen.

Das Buch ist total klasse...the book is totally excellent

Precht's Kunst kein Egoist zu sein.

Das Buch ist sehr viel mehr als man unter dem Titel vermutet. Precht befasst sich mit den aktuelsten, den dringensten Problemen unserer heutigen Gesellschaft - von jeder Sichtweise her. Seine Kenntnis der Fachliteratur zur Bio-Psychologie, Hirnforschung, Oekonomie, Anthropologie und naturlich der Philosophie sind erstaunlich. Ich halte das Buch fuer eines, moeglicherweise das wichtigste Buch unserer Generation und kann es nur jedermann dringend empfehlen. Schlagen Sie irgendeine Seite auf und lesen Sie wenigstens 3 - 4 Seiten und sie werden es schwer finden es aus der Hand zu legen. Nicht nur Kritik an unseren heutigen Einstellungen und Politik, auch Ideen zu ihrer Gesundung und Wiederherstellung des eigentlichen Menschseins finden Sie hier. Und Humor hat er auch!

Definitely "mind" expanding!

This is an excellent introduction to a subject that many people consider too arcane or esoteric to even consider. If that is you, then re-consider! Professor Pessin is an engaging narrator, and takes the listener on a thought-provoking tour of our inner life, tackling such fascinating subjects as mind-body dualism, qualia, and the mysteries of consciousness. I can't recommend it highly enough!!

Clear and Well Balanced

The issues in philosophy of mind are some of the most challenging and important to our understanding of ourselves as human beings that one can imagine. Are our minds illusions, our thoughts determined? Do we have free will? Prof. Pessin's lectures present the issues and principal voices in this field with clarity. He aims to let the great variety of points of view be understood on their own terms. He carefully provides the listener with resources for grasping both the excitement of the field and the difficult choices to be made.

Good introductory course

Well structured, well performed, an overall interesting listen. Could have been a bit longer, but offered a taste of the fundamentals of the discipline nonetheless.

Enjoyable and easy to follow.

I thought these lectures presented the main theories of consciousness in a way that made sense. It was a logical series of arguments that I could follow and I felt I got a lot from it.

What disappointed you about The Alpha Male Guide?

What didnt you like about Alec Sands performance?

The voice of the narrator was so bothering. It was like a rollercoaster. At the beginning of a sentence you barely hear anything and at the end the voice almost destroys your ear-drum. Was he trying to emulate the voice of an alpha male? If so, it is a big fail! This is not the voice of an alpha male but of a bully. James Bond has the voice of an alpha male: clear, calm and confident voice.

If the contents would have been great, I could forgive the voice, but it was not. Most of the advices in this book are very superficial and will not lead you to a better life

Not What I was Expecting, but Entertaining

I love the narrator, I thought he was witty and funny in his performance.

The advice was nothing new; I was expecting some old timey wisdom from the age of those philosophers, which is probably what it was, but I was expecting it to be more aged, I guess.

it is better to choose another book if you are new to existentialism. but once you have grasped the concepts, this book could serve as a quick reminder of who said what .

Disappointed

I don't like to write a review for a book unless its positive, but I was a little bitter over wasting a credit on this. I am very eager to learn more about the subject of existentialism, but this book is way WAY too academic and snooty sounding. I felt like the author was writing to hear how intelligent he sounds. If you don't mind that, then this may hold a lot of information for you. Me, I couldn't get past the style. It was hard to get through the introduction let alone the major text. Three tries. I gave up and will have to look elsewhere for text/audio on existentialism.

Philosophizing beyond Nihilism or Fundamentalism

Eagletons exploration of the meaning of life takes the listener on a meandering and fascinating path through intellectual culture, focusing mostly on 20th-century philosophy. Like the best of Eagletons literary theory and criticism, this audiobook shifts between profound, thought-provoking claims and humorous phrasings and analogies that keeps things lively. Likewise, the themes of the discussion are familiar from other works of his: he banks many of his best shots off the backboard of postmodern thought, rejecting its relativistic pluralism and its privatization of values. Hes particularly interested in the role that language plays in meaning and the implications of the possibility that life is meaningless. Listeners with some background in modern thought, and an interest to learn more, will find this recording worthwhile. The reader is well matched to the material.

Meaning and Skepticism

This short and well written book achieves it's goal. Terry Eagleton produced a clear and well balanced essay about the meaning of life, familiarizing the reader with the different concepts, even with the ones that reject the question. The philosophy's and theology's insights are considered and related with the main question. The reader can grasp the most important facets of the problem, considering the challenges posed by this enterprise. This short introduction makes it happen!

You do the hokey, cokey and.....

After encountering Terry Eagletons literary criticism through the various bookshelves of Modernism and his commentary on most of the central characters of English literature and following his more recent employment law case study and well-deserved spat with Martin Amis in the press, it was great to be able to sit down to a one volume history of everything according to Terry Eagleton.

The private work life of a biscuit brand manager

Now I know why I'm mostly bored by the celebrated personalities of film, music and art, much less TV culture, but am inexplicably fascinated by what's found in gargantuan container ships, the private work life of a biscuit brand manager, the origins of the pylons that stretch power lines across our urban and rural landscapes, and on down the list of obscure objects and professions that Alain de Botton contemplates in this essay collection. The reason I get bored -- and I imagine others -- is that celebrity culture sucks way more attention than it merits. As this writer-philosopher demonstrates, our civilization creates and transacts and consumes many splendid things that don't happen to make into a museum or get digitized for posterity, but they and the work required to bring them to life have consequences -- both corrupting our souls and giving life meaning. De Botton's style can be dense and his arguments spiral, but this book is studded with humorous accounts and consistently entertains.

As a riposte to the preceding reviewer, I've also been listening to Audible audiobooks for 10 years and this is the first time that I remember giving five stars.

Good, but not my favorite

I love this author, but wasn't wild about this book. He presents some interesting perspectives but without some of the flare I have come to expect. Maybe it was the narrator (not his usual guy) while not bad, also nothing special. Worth the credits... just not awesome.

Interesting, but sterile

Botton is eloquent to the point of mastery, but fails to grip the audience by highlighting the human element of the 21st century workforce. Exploring the underrated corners of the global economy, we are treated to interesting anecdotes, but no central thesis.

Fine intro to an authentic science of politics

The "Machiavellian" writers Burnham discusses span a rather diverse spectrum of views. What they have in common is an objective, scientific approach to politics that avoids allowing wishful thinking, or ideas about what ought to be, to impede their discernment of the way things actually are.

I disagreed with Burnham's tendency to dismiss religious ideas as inherently irrationalist. Also, his attempt at clarification in response to Machiavelli's reputation ignores the fact that Machiavelli did, after all, offer some amoral advice, not just non-moral analysis. While some of Burnhams predictions proved correct only in the short run, his method contains within itself the the capacity for self-correction, which is part of the whole point of the book.

This book remains invaluable for all who seek to develop a scientific understanding of politics, regardless of their philosophical persuasion.

Serious political science

The narration could drone, but the content was excellent. Many sections worth re-listening to and bookmarking. Filled with political myth busting and strategies and structures for preserving liberty in the real world.
