Perfect 10, the more volumes of Gibran I read the more I crave. Deeply stirred my soul, spiraled my thoughts.

I've never read a book that touched me so much! Gibran writes in vivid figurative language and lots of imagery. He strums strings of the heart with his insight into situations and stories. Also, if you like this, you'll love Broken Wings.

In all major cultures and traditions the personal experience of becoming whole is thought to be a spiritual one. Starting with this knowledge, Carl Jung - one of the world's most famous psychologists - sought to understand how this came to be part of the human experience and what causes it. Eventually he created his equation for the realization of God, which has often been forgotten about. The author of Becoming Whole, Leslie Stein, - a psychologist herself - wanted to more closely examine Jung's equation, and has in this audiobook. Performer Cris Dukehart narrates, and his pleasant voice is exactly suited for this academic work.

Jung - Brilliant as Always, but Advanced

As a student of Jung's writing and approach, this book is indispensable, but its complexity requires a hard copy as well, as another reviewer pointed out. There are perhaps some Jungian scholars who could do with just this Audible version, but even they would want a hard copy as well I would think.

I am happy to have this Audible version as well as the Kindle version because the book contains so much that deep study is warranted.

The narrator is definitely an acquired taste. She sounds like a female Stephen Hawking after three or more generations of speech generation development. It's a remarkable, if slightly creepy voice for this book. The book's dry nature of important, Jungian depth psychology concepts could use more emotion. And the "young" pronunciation of Jung should never have happened. Don't the narrators have a director who would correct that?

A very thought provoking attack on Platonic philosophy

Iris Murdoch is both a philosopher and novelist. Acastos is the name of a fictional character who together with his friends has two dialogues in two plays with the great Greek philosopher Socrates, who died in 399 BCE. Murdoch uses her plays both to explore two subjects but also to mock Socrates' pupil, the philosopher Plato, and his philosophy.

The first play Art and Eros is about art. What constitutes art? Does it copy nature or present something new? Does it teach truth? What is good and what is bad art? Is art related to the mind or to feelings? What does art teach? Does good art make better citizens? Is all art bad and even dangerous and should be banned, as Plato claims, because art is just an illusion and an illusion is not the truth, and art makes people satisfied and even delighted with illusions when they should be seeking the truth even though it is difficult to deal with the truth? Does Murdoch's Socrates utterly destroy Plato's philosophy in this play by saying that Plato is overly idealistic and that good art can teach people us much about themselves and the rest of the world? These are some of the many questions that are in this play.

Murdoch's second play Above the Gods is, as its subtitle states, A Dialogue about Religion. Is religion outdated, unscientific, full of superstition, a belief in and a reliance on magic? Is it at an outdated attempt to explain the world that is now primitive science? Does it stop thinking because it insists that people rely on traditions and faith? Is it useful for uneducated people because it helps control them? Is there a difference between morality and religion? Can morality exist without religion? Is Plato correct that a person should seek the find "truth," which is "above (passive reliance on) the gods"? Or, is Murdoch's Socrates correct when he criticizes Plato for being too idealistic and seeking complicated solutions when he should be using common sense, for the common people cannot understand and accept Plato's teaching?

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Modern Scholar: First Principles & Natural Law: The Foundations of Political Philosophy, Part II?

The concept of functioning from the perspective of the spirit of truth for the common good and communicating on the level where one is understood rather than truth as something abstract. One must communicate what the other person can understand rather than to just devulge information. It is the principle that is the focus and not how one feels about something. One must reach a place of objectivity rather than functioning on a very personal and subjective level to be contributing to the good of society and actually to one's own good.

Which character as performed by the narrator was your favorite?

This was not a history or a story narrative but a philsophical explanation of moral law and the matter of the principles of natural law.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Coming to grips with the truth objectively.

Any additional comments?

This was the most interesting and logical approach to the matter of ethics and morals I have ever heard. I absolutely loved it. It helped me to really uderstand the matter of communicating on the level of what others understand rather than being idealistic. I listened to it several times.

Key to understanding the American Republic

This author is an expert in his field. And he is able to explain the moral premises of the American Republic with clarity, simplicity, and humor.

With fair warning, once you listen, you may never think of self government and the US Constitution the same way again!

Hadley Arkes is an excellent instructor!

Clear, concise explanations about the basic principles of political philosophy. Listen to the first part of this series first as it builds on previously learned material. Excellent buy. Very enlightening.

"Morals" from an extreme reactionary

His previous course was reasonably good. Only one out of eight lectures was political - he claimed that affirmative action was fully equivalent to segregation. This course is different. Fully one quarter of the course is spent on propagandizing the professor's radical position on abortion. Another quarter is spent attacking the idea that there is right to privacy, and defending laws banning contraception. 1/8 is spent defending the Vietnam War and claiming that South Vietnam was a democracy (an absurdity).

Ruti's book offers a very interesting and compelling way of framing the way we view reality, others, ourselves, and our interactions. It's not an easy listen, but compared to all the other texts out their on Lacanian thought, it's almost a breeze.

Lots to Think About

Really great discussion of various Lacanian viewpoints. Perhaps not for someone completely unfamiliar with some of the names and ideas, but none the less it made some more difficult discussions fairly accessible.

Valuable read

A politicized and existential interpretation of Lacan but one that elucidate many of his difficult concepts clearly and succinctly. Whether you agree with parts of the authors particular interpretation of Lacan, this is a very valuable read.

The only book that my iPod won't even play

No matter how often I repurchase, delete, redownload this title, it won't play on my iPod - I can play it on my desktop, but there's no point. Really disappointing, as I'm interested in this title.

Defense of Adler's "Ten Philosophical Mistakes."

I feel it necessary to defend Adler's work from some of the unjustified criticism it's receiving in the reviews posted prior to my own. But first, I shall post my personal review.

My personal review is thus: I would've given "Overall" 4 stars for the book version, which I also own, but the performance of the audio version is so good that it brought out new aspects of the book for me, hence the 5 stars in "Overall." I am giving it 4 stars in story because Adler does give a justified defense of his position, but I think his position in this book could've been more detailed without disrupting the flow of his steady explanation.

There are several reasons why this is an excellent book that succeeds at its primary premise. A reviewer above me mentioned that truth is propositional, not absolute. Nowhere in this book does Adler claim to have found "absolute" truth. In fact, the book consists of a series of propositions about what Adler has referred to in his other works as "common sense," particularly, those ideas and beliefs which are common to all people, even across racial and national boundaries.

If Adler were proposing to write under the presuppositions of modernism, then he would be obligated to note that he's merely making propositional claims. But the whole point of the book, stated clearly in the introduction, is to refute just so many errors of modernism.
