Title: You Shall Be as Gods
Subtitle: A Radical Interpretation of the Old Testament and Its Tradition
    Author: Erich Fromm
    Narrator: Allan Robertson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-18-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 27 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Erich Fromm's innovative analysis of the Old Testament as a striking early example of radical humanism. The Old Testament is one of the most carefully studied books in the worlds history. It is also one of the most misunderstood. This founding text of the worlds three largest religions is also, Erich Fromm argues, an impressive radical humanist text. He sees the stories of mankinds transition from divided clans to united brotherhood as a tribute to the human power to overcome. Filled with hopeful symbolism, You Shall Be as Gods shows how the Old Testament and its tradition is an inspiring ode to human potential.

    Fascinating new ideas
Would you listen to You Shall Be as Gods again? Why?
I actually did listen to the first few chapters a second time, before proceeding with the rest, to focus more on the details of what was said.
What was one of the most memorable moments of You Shall Be as Gods?
That the Bible/God are about eliminating idol worship.
What does Allan Robertson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The presentation was impressive. It wasn't just reading, it included styles that led me to think this is how Fromm himself might have expressed his ideas.
    Any additional comments?
Agree or disagree with his opinions about the Bible and religion, it's thought-provoking and scholarly in its insights.
Prescient for our worlds' conflict against
The evil so evidenced from the macro of Islamic terror reigning through horrific brutality of the innocent to the micro experienced in our daily dealing with more and more seemingly soulless human beings. And thus chipping away at ones inner core values of what shape us into beings for good.

    Fromm at full steam
Dabbling in psychoanalysis and literary interpretation, this is a must read for anyone interested in understanding (not interpreting) dreams and symbols, and includes a broad explanation of terms and thoughtful insight into the powerful wisdom of the world of the unconscious mind. The closing chapter on a Kafka masterpiece is worth the many hours of listening to this narrator (who could have also played Doug in the animated film 'Up')- the only drawback was that this narrator sounded like Alan Alda without the dynamic spark that would have made this reading stand out: a great attempt nevertheless

    Title: Freedom Evolves
    Author: Daniel C. Dennett
    Narrator: Robert Blumenfeld
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-08-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 78 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Can there be freedom and free will in a deterministic world? Renowned philosopher Daniel Dennett emphatically answers "yes!" Using an array of provocative formulations, Dennett sets out to show how we alone among the animals have evolved minds that give us free will and morality. Weaving a richly detailed narrative, Dennett explains in a series of strikingly original arguments - drawing upon evolutionary biology, cognitive neuroscience, economics, and philosophy - that far from being an enemy of traditional explorations of freedom, morality, and meaning, the evolutionary perspective can be an indispensable ally. In Freedom Evolves, Dennett seeks to place ethics on the foundation it deserves: a realistic, naturalistic, potentially unified vision of our place in nature.
    Members Reviews:
I knew I was going to like this book
I enjoy the author's approach to our deterministic universe and the perspective of free will with moral responsibility for our own actions. As always, the author is never in your face with his beliefs and practices the art of critical reasoning better than anyone. He puts others contrary viewpoints in their most effective forms and systematically shows why they are not right and are not as effective as they might seem at first glance, and then goes on to build a coherent consistent system.
For me, I enjoy the author's writing style, but I realize it can be dense for others and the author himself refers to some of his previous writing as "obscure and difficult". I guess I like obscure and difficult when I know at the end I'll understand the subject matter better than I have ever before.
He says that "if you make anything small enough than everything will be external". By making the role of the individual insignificant you will make free will outside of the person and free will belongs within us not outside of us. Also, he says that "we all want to be held accountable for our own actions", both at the individual and societal level. That makes free will within us.
As the author steps the reader through the development of freedom, he also gives the listener some of the best takes on why homo sapiens are so different from any other species known in the universe.
Most of what is in this book seems to be covered in his other books I've read, Consciousness, Darwin's Dangerous Idea, and Intuition Pumps. For those who don't have the time to read those three books (2 of which are fairly long listens), this book would act as a great surrogate for them.
    Complicated, but worth it.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. I think free will is an interesting topic. It is also third on my list of questions which are hard to answer, after the existence of God and abortion. Prior to reading this book, I had concluded that free will did not exist, but I eventually came to doubt this conclusion. To make sure that I was correct about free will's nonexistence, I read this book. After I read it, I continued disbelieving in free will, but I had stronger and stronger doubts as I came to better understand the compatibilist arguments. Ten weeks after reading this book, I concluded that the ability we have to make choices warrants the name "free will". I'm glad I ironed out the truth on this complicated issue.

Title: Marx: Philosophy in an Hour
    Author: Paul Strathern
    Narrator: Jonathan Keeble
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-25-13
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Philosophy for busy people. Listen to this succinct account of the philosophy of Karl Marx in just one hour.
Karl Marx's philosophical critique of capitalism and his solution of communism directly led to the formation of the communist state in the Soviet Union. Whilst this great venture has now all but completely failed, Marxs philosophy has proved to be arguably the most influential of the 20th century; the influence of Marxism can be seen in subjects as diverse as the infamous policies of Joseph Stalin to many of the progressive humanitarian reforms of the 20th century.
The audiobook is an expert account of Marxs life and philosophical ideas - entertainingly written and above all easy listening. Also included are selections from Marxs work, suggested further reading, and chronologies that place Marx in the context of the broader scheme of philosophy.
    Critic Reviews:
Well-written, clear and informed, they have a breezy wit about them . . .I find them hard to stop reading. (New York Times)
Witty, illuminating, and blessedly concise (Wall Street Journal)
Each of these little books is witty and dramatic and creates a sense of time, place, and character . . . I cannot think of a better way to introduce oneself and one's friends to Western civilization. (Boston Globe)
A godsend in this era of the short attention span. (New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Marx in an hour
Showed a poor understanding of Marxism . I felt it was biased and written from a pro capitalist viewpoint. a somewhat dismissive and shallow read.
    Biased and unbalanced
I was hoping for a balanced view of the ideas of Marx but this audiobook has an air of sneer and mockery of his ideas. I was disappointed in this. Many nations have declared themselves Marxist but I didn't want to hear about failed translation of his theories. I wanted to hear about Marx.
    Doesnt skim the surface
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If you want to learn anything about Marx, don't start here. Propaganda piece of the worst kind. Go straight to his writings.
I enjoyed listening to it more than once
It gave good background, as well as the ideas. it was particularly good to listen to in Audio book form.
    It was notably objective.

Title: Reason & Faith: Philosophy in the Middle Ages
    Author: The Great Courses
    Narrator: Professor Thomas Williams
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 12 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-08-13
    Publisher: The Great Courses
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 70 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Today we tend to separate questions of logic from questions of belief, philosophy from religion, reason from faith. But for 1,000 years during a pivotal era of Western thought, reason and faith went hand-in-hand in the search for answers to the most profound issues investigated by Christianity's most committed scholars. In 24 ambitious lectures, Professor Williams examines the great Christian philosophers from Augustine to Ockham, following their efforts to illuminate the full scope of Christian doctrine using philosophical tools inherited, in large part, from the ancient Greeks.
Far from being a "dark" age, this was an era when faith was not blind and reason was not godless, when the great philosophers and the great theologians were the very same people, and no one saw anything surprising about that.
Building on the work of Plato and Aristotle, medieval philosophers worked diligently to show how the Christian faith is consistent with what can be demonstrated by reason, asking such questions as: Can God's existence and attributes be established by reason alone? Are there Christian doctrines that are beyond the scope of logical demonstration? How can Christian beliefs be defended and shown to be internally consistent?
During this extraordinarily rich period of intellectual ferment, philosophers participated in a common struggle with transcendent questions, using reasoning in the service of faith. This course serves as a fascinating philosophical backdrop to illuminate the stimulating debates that occupied many of the greatest minds of the era.

Professor Williams Blends Reason with History
If you could sum up Reason & Faith: Philosophy in the Middle Ages in three words, what would they be?
    Organized, factual and informative.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Reason & Faith: Philosophy in the Middle Ages?
When Prof. Williams addressed the nature of Evil, he unleashed, in my mind, a new way of looking at things as they ought to be. By defining Evil as an absence of Goodness where Goodness ought to be, I thought of the light spectrum, where White is all colors and Black is no color at all. As different shades of light are removed from White it moves toward Black. Goodness works the same way demonstrating the continuity of the universe.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Prof. Williams made a point that some philosophers participated in the quest for truth with a focus on the methods of reasoning rather than on the discovery of truth; it was more of a game than a search. Today there are many who employ philosophical reasoning in a quest to support a predetermined personal agenda much to the detriment of mankind's quest for truth.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
One point that bothers me still is the persecution of those who are truly in search of the truth. No single moment, unless it was chapters 5 and 6 with Boethius' Lady Philosophy dialogue about the fickleness of fortune, depicts the helplessness of the crusader in search of the truth.
    Any additional comments?
The entire series of lectures puts the history of mankind's struggles with logical reasoning in perspective.

    Laws of Power
Warning: Those that are too easily influenced probally shouldn't read this book. While very interesting and enjoyable, this book has amoral principles. But you shouldn't view this book as the bible and follow it in such a way. If you can read it with your "own" mind, whether you agree with its principles or not, i believe almost everyone will find that a lot of what is written has truth to it. Its only when you start to take every Law seriously and fail to understand that everything is situational that you start to misinterpret the book. If you take the time to independently study indivuals that have achieved notable success in their lives, especially politicians, you will then see that sometimes it takes a little more than good work ethic and integrity to excel.
    Really Good Read
I thought the book was absolutely relevant to today even though the examples in most of the 48 laws were from historical occurances throughout history. Robert Greene blends many different learning methods, including fables, poetry, as well as regular prose to convey general life lessons that many of us learn the hard way. Some laws of power may be deemed unethical, while other simple, but the point is each and every one is true and relevant to accumulating power. By using this book you can protect yourself from extremely ambitious people, while executing your own ambitions as well. Great read to understanding the human psyche and its quest to be ambitious.

    Critic Reviews:
Comprising well written essays by internationally acclaimed Hegel scholars (although many are from North America), this volume makes an excellent and accessible reference both to scholars and students of Hegel and Hegelianism. (Religious Studies Review)
"This superb study brings together Hegel scholars who have penned uniformly excellent articles on all aspects of Hegel's career ... Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lowerdivision undergraduates through researchers/faculty." (Choice)

Great Audio Tome Desublated by Publishers
First, any review of a 35-hour audio tome of essays on Hegel will be tempered by misgivings about the mental state of anyone who would actually purchase such a thing. An obscurantist dialectician with way too much time on his hands? Who can trust such a reviewer?
What can I say? The title doesn't lie. You know what you are getting. You either are a Hegelian or you are not a Hegelian--unless, of course, you are a Hegelian, in which case you are both.
As a matter of fact, I was delighted to find that these essays are relatively clear, quite diverse, and nicely comprehensive. The editor Stephen Houlgate is one of the best and most lucid of contemporary Hegel scholars. The works, so far, are clearer than one might expect, (though I have only started, and have a long ways to go before I approach the Judith Butler essay at the very end, where editor-defying syntactical horrors undoubtedly await).
The reading is clear, well-paced, and manly, seemingly sturdy enough for the 35-hour march. Though to differentiate the Hegel quotes the reader does toss in a German accent that to my ear sounds a bit odd. Of course, there are no recordings of Hegel himself, so perhaps he really did sound like Gandhi attempting Yiddish. (Though if he had, I suspect Schelling would have noted that for posterity.)
And then there are the publishers! It it is really very admirable that they would actually produce such an audiobook for the three individuals in the world who might be enticed to purchase it. A noble work. But...!
But why no chapter titles and a mismatch between the book chapters and the audio chapters, which renumber with each audio "part." So you have 35 essays and no way to find them by title or even by counting. Why do so many publishers do this? I mean, here we are with Google glasses and 3D printers.

    Narrator: Mark Ashby
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-18-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 29 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Philosophers don't just make claims, they give arguments.
Does the existence of evil call into doubt the existence of God? Show me the argument.
Will living a just life lead to happiness? Show me the argument.
Philosophy starts with questions, but attempts at answers are just as important, and these answers require reasoned argument. Cutting through notoriously dense and verbose philosophical prose, the authors set 100 famous and influential arguments in context, including key quotations, to explain the original style and approach. Each argument is laid bare in its essential form, with premises and conclusions plainly identified and the form of argument specified.
Designed to offer a quick and compact reference to everything from Aquinas' Five Ways to prove the existence of God to the metaphysical possibilities of zombie minds, Just the Arguments is an invaluable onestop argument shop. Michael Bruce currently researches in the history of philosophy. He has taught philosophy and mathematics courses at the University of Washingtons Robinson Center for Young Scholars. Steven Barbone is Associate Professor of Philosophy at San Diego State University.
    Critic Reviews:
An invaluable tool for studentsor anyone interested in philosophy Just the Arguments distills the most important arguments from the Western philosophical tradition into concise and lucid prose. The editors should be commended for providing such an actionpacked resource; it's highly recommended! (Fritz Allhoff, Western Michigan University)
    Members Reviews:
    Like reading a grocery list
This really is just a reference book for introductory philosophy courses, and it did not translate well at all to the audio format. I'm sure the actual content is of good quality, but it is NOT for the armchair philosopher. As the narrator listed off each component of each argument, it was very difficult to keep track of what was being said. I'm sure reading it would have been better, but again, this isn't a book for readers who just want to know more about the 100 best arguments. It's for people who need to know how the arguments are technically structured.
    Difficult to follow
Would you try another book from Michael Bruce and Steven Barbone and/or Mark Ashby?
    Not sure.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I enjoyed the parts that flowed like a story, but the ones that were in premises and conclusions format were too boring. Overall, the book was difficult to understand for someone who took philosophy classes too long ago. I would need a refresher introductory course to be able to follow the reading, I guess. In addition, this is not the kind of book to listen while you're driving, although I chose an audiobook because I spend a considerable amount of time commuting. For all these reasons, I am trying to return it.
Did Just the Arguments inspire you to do anything?
Return the book and take an introductory philosophy class.
Great book, but not for listening!
    Any additional comments?
I think this is a fantastic book for getting the basic philosophical ideas and arguments out there and on the table for discussion. I wish I had this book when I was in college. The problem with the Audible edition is that you really need to see the arguments on paper and read them a couple of times.
