    Title: Anselm's Discovery
Subtitle: A Re-Examination of the Ontological Proof of God's Existence
    Author: Charles Hartshorne
    Narrator: Chiquito Crasto
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-25-16
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Did Anselm, in his "Ontological Argument" (first advanced around 1070), make one of the greatest intellectual discoveries of all time, or did he merely fall into an interesting blunder?
In his day, Anselm was criticized by Gaunilo. Subsequent philosophers have generally considered Gaunilo's criticisms to be weighty. Descartes' attempt to resuscitate Anselm's argument led to Kant's supposed refutation, which most later philosophers have considered to be fundamentally sound. Charles Hartshorne has brought back the "Ontological Argument" as a major problem of modern philosophical analysis, and Anselm's Discovery has been described as his most systematic exposition of the history of the subject. According to Hartshorne, generations of philosophers have read Anselm superficially, and have failed to see that Anselm presented two forms of the Argument, the second involving a genuine conceptual breakthrough.

Necessary Reading For All Scientists and Theologians
If my research on the author of this book is correct, the author died on 10/9/00 at the ripe age of 103. His philosophical work must have been widely accepted because he was honored by the Library of Living Philosophers in Vol XX. He studied Anselm for a long time having written his thesis at Harvard in 1923 on the "Ontological Argument Invented by Anselm." The Argument was issued by Anselm at about 1070 AD. So, if one wants to judge Anselm's work on the "Ontological Proof for God's Existence," this book is a great one from a great philosopher. This popular and important 1965 book was printed again in 1991
Anselm shows that we cannot prove that God does not exist beause we cannot conceive of things that do not exist. So, when people say that God does not exist, they are entering a domain of thought that is uncertain. A more certain path lies with reasoning.
For instance, with reasoning, Anselm concludes that God's existence is necessary and that ordinary existences apply only to things found in the universe. I believe that his line of reasoning goes this way: if the existence of things in the universe are ordinary, they either exist or do not exist. In modern science, these ordinary existences would be known as contingent existences. But, contingent has no meaning without its opposite, necessity. Thus, unless contingent eisistences coexist with a necesary existent, a one-sided universe is being conceived. Anselm's line of reasoning seems to move his thoughts into dialectical thinking, panentheism, and an eternal world consisting of God and Nature.
The author shows why nine centuries of refutations produced many errors in comprehending Anselm's writing. For six centuries, Anselm's Proof was simply ignored. But, in the next three centuries, fifteen authors cite the Proof and ten of them accept his proof.
So, this book is important to believers in God.
Most of the Ontological Argument has been overlooked.
Charles Hartshorne, demonstrates that most scholars ignored the superior argument of Anselm's Proslogium 3. Indeed, many philosophers and critics never even read the actual text, but only heard it second hand.

    Publisher: Agora, New Internet Technologies
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Mill's thinking about freedom in civic and social life examines fundamental principles shared among conservative, liberal, and radical politicians. The life of true philosophy stands outside the political battles that are rampant in society and seeks the political wisdom that is necessary for a good life in any age. Mill's philosophical presentation and analysis of those principles stand alongside the reflections of Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
When the officials of any government seek to change the laws that regulate individual liberty or when rhetoricians seek to change public opinion about what individuals should or should not be allowed to say or do, Mill's On Liberty serves as an effective antidote to the poisons of excessive intrusion into the lives of individuals. The present edition is specifically designed to employ the dual nature of rhetoric - oral and written language - and to utilize electronic technology to open Mill's text to contemporary listeners.

Analysis of The Importance of Individual Liberty to a Healthy Society
John Stuart Mills elegantly articulates the importance and power Liberty, particularly the need for freedom of thought and speech by the individual for the good of society.
A timely read in light of the recent rise of the violent, intolerant anti-free speech radical left-wing Marxists calling themselves ANTIFA.

    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
The Dao De Jing exists on the border between poetry and philosophy, embracing both mythos and logos. Its poetic form can stand alone, but it is enriched when its timeless ideas are analyzed and explained through careful scholarship. For example: He who knows others is knowledgeable. He who knows himself is wise. These words resemble Socrates' account of his own quest in Plato's Apology.
Ancient philosophy, both in China and in Greece, places self-knowledge at the center of the search for wisdom. Contemporary philosophers are often misled about this way of thinking, because the self has been detached from external things and separated from nature and society. The wisdom of China and of Europe unites human existence and nature.

    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Whitehead presented these three lectures at Princeton University in 1929. Although 85 years have passed, his central thesis and his analysis remain remarkably current. The scientific materialism that Whitehead opposed with such vigor continues to dominate in academic circles, and even now those who question that worldview are often accused of being antiscientific. This is especially true in discussions of the nature of the human mind and its relation to the body (particularly the brain).
It is hard to find a contemporary thinker with a better perspective on the nature and role of natural science than Whitehead, who, with Bertrand Russell, published Principia Mathematica in 1910; who taught logic and mathematics at Trinity College of Cambridge University; who taught philosophy of science at University College London; and who was a professor of philosophy at Harvard University beginning in 1924. Whitehead's cosmology is far from antiscientific, but he does explain why scientific method and technological practice alone are not able to provide a comprehensive understanding of the full range of human thought and experience. This work explains what we must do to achieve such a comprehensive understanding.

    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
The Age of Genius explores the eventful intertwining of outward event and inner intellectual life to tell, in all its richness and depth, the story of the 17th century in Europe. It was a time of creativity unparalleled in history before or since, from science to the arts, from philosophy to politics.
Acclaimed philosopher and historian A. C. Grayling points to three primary factors that led to the rise of vernacular (popular) languages in philosophy, theology, science, and literature; the rise of the individual as a general and not merely an aristocratic type; and the invention and application of instruments and measurement in the study of the natural world.
Grayling vividly reconstructs this unprecedented era and breathes new life into the major figures of the 17th century intelligentsia who spanned literature, music, science, art, and philosophy - Shakespeare, Monteverdi, Galileo, Rembrandt, Locke, Newton, Descartes, Vermeer, Hobbes, Milton, and Cervantes, among many more. During this century, a fundamentally new way of perceiving the world emerged as reason rose to prominence over tradition, and the rights of the individual took center stage in philosophy and politics - a paradigmatic shift that would define Western thought for centuries to come.
    Members Reviews:
Today is a function of the 17th century
To understand who we are one must first understand where we came from and how we got there. Nothing provides more insight into our current human condition than a well thought out history about a critical century of thought such as this book provides. I've noticed that my "Scientific American" during the last two issues has commented on how the two statements recently made by actual politicians: "Climate change is a Chinese Hoax", and that "philosophers are not as important as welders", show a complete detachment from reality. Critical reasoning and rational thought based on empirical facts are universally accepted by subscribers to "Scientific American" and they owe a debt a gratitude to the 17th century pre-Enlightenment age as outlined in this book.
The book provides a very good narrative for describing how we went from magic to science in such a short time. He'll bring in the elements from the 16th century which are necessary for telling the story and takes the story into the 18th and beyond when required. He never forces the reader into the artificial boundaries created by the 17th century as such.
There is one criticism I did have on this book. It was how he presented the 30 year war (1618 - 1648). He is muddled. There are much better books and lectures on the subject matter, but don't allow yourself to get discouraged by his incoherence on that most interesting of all wars and realize it does matter for understanding today. Students of understanding modern times often make the major mistake of starting their studies with the beginning of the 20th century. Today's world did not happen in a vacuum and this book provides an excellent starting point for understanding today's world.
Progress leading to critical reasoning and rational thought based on empirical methods and logical principles were not guaranteed for humanity. This book shows some of the paradigm shifts in thinking that were necessary before they became the norm.

    Publisher's Summary:
What is matter anyways? - From organisms to cells to proteins to molecules to atoms to electrons to light? The most famous equation in modern physics is Einstein's E=MC2, which, if we pause for a second, is as mysterious as anything written in our ancient religious scriptures and measurably more radical. My point is that the resistance we have to reductionists who say we are "just matter" is because we tend to think of matter as flat. It is, of course, anything but. Thus maybe the reason we opt for dualism or the idea that something must be "beyond" matter is because we haven't come to grips to the amazing plasticity and mystery inherent in matter itself. In other words, we are using an extremely outdated and misleading definition of matter and, in so doing, losing sight of the wonderfulness of what physics and neuroscience is saying. We are not lessened because we are just matter, just as we wouldn't be lessened in Sach Khand if we were made of just "light".

Critias is one of Plato's late dialogues and contains the story of the mighty island kingdom Atlantis and its attempt to conquer Athens, which failed due to the ordered society of the Athenians. Critias is the second of a projected trilogy of dialogues, preceded by Timaeus and followed by Hermocrates. The latter was possibly never written, and Critias was left incomplete. This edition was translated by Benjamin Jowett in 1871.

    Atlantis has been found!
While this book is actually part of a longer narrative (and apparently the rest of it was lost to history, more's the pity), the description that Critias tells Socrates about the island nation of Atlantis is fairly believable and well thought out. If Atlantis really existed (and forget all the tabloid junk about death rays, flying saucers, and so forth and read this instead), this would be their travel brochure. The description of the island nation reminded me of Thomas Moore's Utopia or Edwin Abbot's Flatland in that all three places seem like they actually could have existed.
    Two Stars
I seriously thought it would be a little bit thicker. The booklet is short paged summary.
Remarkable that Critias discusses creation and the great flood verified by other ancient documents
Critias is a character in one of Plato's dialogues. Critias discusses the ancient state of Atlantis and the early Greek state. Remarkable that Critias discusses creation and the great flood verified by other ancient documents.
The Greeks documented much of the history of 400 to 500 B.C.
The author did a great job of translation!
