Helpful read

Mr. Reid gives some very helpful advice for sharing the gospel with others. He gave resources to assist in learning how to best approach this command of Jesus based on our differing gifts, limitations, and personalities.

I love how Dr Reid makes it simple & clear, the joy of sharing about our good God. Most of these things will surprise you not because they are new, but because they are very simple & you do them everyday in other areas of life. This isn't another witnessing plan, it's just simply talking to people.

Take care of yourself so you can also take care of others.

A good read for those who are burning out from our fast paced world. A lot of useful suggestions. Not a big fan of exercise but it was one of the ideas to help regain balance. Plus taking time for vacation. Getting away to relax but not with the agenda to see this, go there, do that, etc. Actually taking time to wind down.

Great book

As usual, my five point review:

The premise of Refresh focuses on evaluating our lives through various lenses such as rest, relaxation, reduction, etc. Each of the ten chapters begins with the letter R and is called a âstationâ at the Refresh Gym. If you read the introduction, youâll note that Refresh is a feminized adaption (by Shona, presumably) of of a book that David Murray wrote for men, Reset. I found the gym analogy a bit cheesy and did wonder how many women that imagery would appeal to. That aside, I would recommend the book. It began with Shonaâs story, detailing her journey towards burn out. The trajectory introduced by the book argues that most (Christian) women are somewhere on this spectrum: stressed â> anxious â> overwhelmed â> burned out â> sad â> depressed â> suicidal (p. 24). I would agree with that notion; I think in our culture it is tough to not fit into one of those categories. I wasnât clear if that trajectory was research based or not, because I would perhaps organize the spectrum differently, but for the sake of this review: I donât think it matters.

Though I did not find the majority of this book to be ânewâ information, what I did wholeheartedly appreciate was the balance between psychological/medical research, self-help tips and tricks, and Gospel truth throughout this book. This was particularly poignant in discussions of physical and mental health, areas that the church doesnât often address.

The Bible â guides us to care for both the body and the soul. The apostle Paul presents his theology of the body in 1 Corinthians 6:9â20. He starts by admitting that the human body has been damaged by sin (vv. 9â10). However, that doesnât mean we just forget the body. No, Paul says Christâs redemption is not just for the soul but also for the body. Itâs a full-body and a full-soul salvation. âThe body is . . . for the Lord,â insists Paul, âand the Lord for the bodyâ (v. 13). He made it, saved it, and maintains an eternal interest in it. (p. 68)

One of the aspects of the book that I did not like was the approach to relaxation.

But as we are commanded to love Him ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE

This book is LIFE-CHANGING. It flips over our culture's shallow view on health (that one must "look" a certain way, fit into a certain size, follow XYZ meal plans, etc. in order to have worth...) - and instead puts God front and center, leading us to wholeness. He loves us. Period. But as we are commanded to love Him ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE, then we are to also honor and worship Him by the way we live and take care of ourselves: our physical health, spiritual health, mental/emotional health, and social health. If you have a body, you need this book.

Powerful book!

This book is incredible! Alisa walks you through truth as it relates to health, wholeness and freedom in Christ in beautiful ways. I've been working through the book with a friend and we've both been so impressed as we move through each week. With powerful readings, a great work out calendar, Bible readings and deep, thoughtful questions - this book is powerful and a catalyst for change.

I recommend highly.

Great ideas for making mealtimes special

Finally someone tells me how to have a great dinner experience.

I have young kids, and dinners around our table are often chaotic and loud, and I am exhausted and just want to eat quietly and without fussing at the kids, or the kids fussing at each other. Sally Clarkson makes me feel that 1) I am not alone in this, 2) it won't always be that way, and 3) I can steer the tone of the dinner so that it gives me life instead of drains it.

Sally Clarkson has a way with making you feel that you are capable of having a Lifegiving Table. She knows that every home looks different than hers, but she is able to give practical hints on how to make the dinner table a place that breathes life into all who sit around it. She gives a glimpse of her own mealtimes, and then gives other ideas on how that might look around your own table.

The best part is that you know you can do it. It takes effort and thought, yes, but it is not out of reach. And any table, no matter how chipped or worn, or even not a table at all! can be one that gives life into those who gather around. Conversations start and hearts are formed for God in the every day moments around the dinner table. I have already noticed a difference in the way we commune at the table, and it has been nice (I've only been trying some ideas in the book for a few days now).

There are even some recipes that are simple, and yet delicious. I've tried out a few already.

We probably all long for the peaceful, lighthearted, inviting meal pictured on the front of this lovely book, The LifeGiving Table by Sally Clarkson. Am I right? I look at that and just feel like that's a dinner that I would like to be invited to!

Sally Clarkson's lovely book gives you that same feeling, a longing to have a table-life like she and her family do. The subtitle of the book is, "Nurturing faith through feasting, one meal at a time."

Throughout the book, the author describes how she has utilized mealtimes (and snack/tea times) as opportunities for sharing her life, wisdom, and faith with others. She shares abundantly with her family and children as well as with others she comes into contact with.

One of the purposes of this book is to encourage the readers to use meals/mealtimes as opportunities for service. Serving others through offering food, conversation, encouragement, and more.
