One of the best I 've listened to yet!
I thought I loved Moist Von Lipvig (Going Postal and Making Money) but then Willian Deword and his crew stole my heart (or should I say funny bone?) I laugh til I cry every time Otto takes the first "iconograph"! After 25 years in the newspaper business, I find this book terrific on so many levels. Do yourself a favor and download it now!!!
    Classic Pratchett
DO NOT be put off by the fact that the reader is not Nigel Planer. At first I was bothered by not hearing Planer read, and then I quickly realized I was completely hooked on the reading. Briggs has the ability to make his Vimes, his Carrot, his Angua all sound just right. This is an excellent reading of Pratchett at his best. And when Pratchett's at his best, what more is there to say.
    Another gem...
This is another gem of a book from Terry Pratchett, who is consistently funny and, more than occasionally, thought provoking.
Although it does not centre around the usual Pratchett characters I enjoyed all the new people, and there are appearances by many of the favourites (who can fail to love the Patrician's sneering intelligence, or Vimes sullen integrity?!).
I found that I preferred Stephen Briggs' narration to Nigel Planer's as he has a far better pace than Planer and every character sounded right to me.
Buy it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
    Newsprint in audio works fine
I had previously read "The Truth" and was a little nervous about how a book so focused on the printed word would make the transition to audiobook. Luckily, the answer is: just fine. Stephen Briggs does a fine job of orally recreating the newspaper stories, and his voices for the main characters are spot on. (Mr. Tulip, the ominous bad guy with artistic taste, especially.) You'll get the most out of "The Truth" if you've read some of Pratchett's previous Ankh-Morpork books, as it relies on knowledge of characters introduced previously.
    One great book
Pratchett is among the best authors I have ever read, in this book we are taken back to the Discworld's geatest city and find out what happends when "movable type" is allowed to walk the streets. A great edition to the series.

Good story, but multiple readers were distracting
While most of the readers did a fine job with their segments, I found the switching of voices per character distracting. [This is not a "cast recording"-style reading, with one reader per character; each reader has a section of text and reads all the voices within that segment, so sometimes Igor is voiced by a woman and sometimes by a man - and with different accents, too {wry grin}.] Having one narrator for the text and the others doing one character-voice each might have worked better, though this would obviously be harder to record. Overall I'd prefer a single narrator - and Nigel Planer has been doing a wonderful job on the other books.
5 Stars for the story, 1 star for the reading
Out of all the Discworld books offered by this site, this is the first one to disappoint me. Having multiple people read a book is a fine idea, but why does this group have a tendency to change parts at will? You get used to hearing one voice read a character and then you get a different person reading the character with completely different style. I cannot come up with any reason why this was done except for the possibility that the person reading was the one who showed up to work that day. Several of the characters are well done by this group, which makes it even more disturbing when the voice for that character changes.
The story is another wonderful Discworld title. If you like the series, you will enjoy this one also. However, since I have learned that ISIS has produced this book with Stephen Briggs reading, I don't think I can recommend this version. I hope that Audible will acquire the ISIS version and continue to provide the ISIS versions of this series.
    Great story - narration disaster
Because it was a Terry Pratchett story, I bought this with high hopes and because no other narration was available, but agree with other reviewers completely - the multi narrators are a disaster.
When you have an absolute winner like Nigel Planer who has brought our old friends like DEATH and Nanny Ogg to life ( no joke exactly intended!) why change? To hear DEATH in an ordinary dull voice and Nanny Ogg so very American was just all wrong and such a let down, and it just got worse and worse. Please, please, please get Planer back and re- record this as continuous narrative with the right emphasis and pacing.
The story is very very good, but the jarring narration distracts so badly.
    Back to the studio...
Just a quick warning that the 47-second threatening intro about Terry Pratchett's copyright is the best-recorded bit of audio in this purchase. And it's a distributer add-on. Rudnicki, De Cuir, et al have done some great work (Ender's Game).

    Witches vs. Elves
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. This is Terry Pratchett at his best, funny and wise.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There are too many to choose from. I'd have to say Nanny Ogg in this one, because of her laid-back and unashamed attitude to life, sex and food.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Nanny Ogg in the restaurant making a shambles of the seductive dinner.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It took me 3 sittings, but yes, I would love to have done it in one go.
    Any additional comments?
This book is filled with great individuals. All 3 witches. The Librarian. The Arch Chancellor. The Dean and his dried frog pills. Ponder Stibbins and his theories of quantum magic. Casanunda, the dwarf 2nd greatest lover in the world. (We try harder,)
On top of this the story is exciting and compelling. There is so much packed into this book it's a wonder it doesn't explode.
    Lords and Ladies
I did like this one but it is not his best. It is worth listing to BUT Steven Briggs is the best for Terry's books in my opinion.
    One of the best
Not all Discworld novels are equal, and this is one of the best ones. All of my favourite characters, and gentle rollicking plot and Nigel Planer's excellent narration make this book a winner.
    VERY entertaining :)
The witches are at it again and they are funnier than ever. I giggled SO MUCH. Excellent palette cleanser (on SO many levels).
    Great story
Would you listen to Lords and Ladies again? Why?
I would recommend Lords & Ladies, as it is a vital part to the on-going Discworld series.
What did you like best about this story?
It's a Discworld story. What is not to love?
What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Not much. I love Nigel Planer's comedy but his voice range leaves a lot to be desired. Every character sounds like they have some sort of sinus blockage, and he sometimes reads a bit slowly.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
There is a good reason I don't make films: I find their tag lines to be annoying.
    Any additional comments?
Listen to it, and think of Shakespeare.

Great book, great performance, but poor quality
I am a huge fan of the Discworld series, and I love listening to Nigel Planer as he does the narration, but the static and poor audio quality was barely tolerable, so I took off a star for that.
Even though the listing shows the audio format is 'e' quality, in reality, it seems like it's the same poor quality recording from years ago that was wrapped in a higher bitrate wrapper.
To hear the difference, listen to the sample from Discworld, Book #8 - Guards, Guards! I believe that book comes from a new, higher quality source. Sounds clean and well recorded, whereas Witches Abroad is compressed and full of static by comparison.
As to the content of the book... if you like the Discworld series, then you'll love this book. It's a 'Witches' book, all about Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat, and the power of stories. It's setting is a loose blend of Disney World and New Orleans - of which Terry Pratchett wrote "...in one, you go there and Fun is manufactured and presented to you, in the other you just eat and drink a lot and fun happens." Having just come back from a Disney World vacation, I totally agree.
    What fun!
Wow! Great narration. I love Pratchett's books and had doubts that it would work as an audio-book. Those doubts are overcome. This was wonderfully fun to listen to.
    the three not-so-innocents go traveling
This was a good story about stories, disguised as an homage to a famous travelogue. That's it for the plot summary - plenty of those online. I really enjoyed the way the book unfolded and found the thoughtful satire and philosophy a welcome change. I thought the reader did a great job with voicing the women and all the other characters.
One of the best Witch books
I'm a Terry Pratchett fangirl. I adore almost everything he writes. He's witty and clever, and knows things about Story that amaze me.
This book is about Fairy Tales, and how a fairy godmother may not be who you think she is.
Pratchett narrators are generally excellent. I love Nigel Planer's way with voices.
I listen to this one over and over again.
    A bubbling cauldron of fun!
I am an unabashed Terry Pratchett fan, and his three witches are among my very favorite Discworld inhabitants.
Nigel Planer's reading of Witches Abroad is absolutely spot-on. He brings just the right quality to each character and the entire book comes to life for the listener.
    Highest recommendation for this one!

The most moving of the series
Even among fan groups of the series where everyone has his or her own favorite characters, but many consider this the best book of the series. The wonderful moving and hilarious story of Death as he takes a holiday is an enchanting story that culminates in a wonderful climax that stays with you long after the book is done. Truly Discworld at is best.
One of the best yet! Fantastically funny!
My 9 year old got me into these Discworld book and we've listened to a pile of them by now. This has to be one of the all-time best. We laughed through the whole thing. (Thought I'd choke over the story of how One Man Bucket, the Indian ghost, got his name. Good thing my son didn't really get it! I've already told him he needs to re-read these when he's an adult.) These books are so funny on so many levels.
    The Human Side of Death
Does Death have a soft heart (metaphorically or otherwise)? Terry Pratchett takes us on another wild, contorted tale where we get expanded insights into the sentimental wanderings of Death Personified. This 7-foot tall skeleton tries to get a better understanding of humans by posing as one of them, but through all his misadventures, he just can't seem to get the hang of being alive. If you like the Discworld stories, this one is the best of the best; lively characters, rapidly changing plot, and another excellent narration by Nigel Planer.
The Care of the Reaper Man...
The Discworld has many endearing characters, some frivolous, others ridiculous, and quite a few ironic to the point of absurdity. But of all the repeating characters in this twisted universe spawned from Terry Pratchett's mind, DEATH is one of my favorites.
Reaper Man provides all the classic silliness one would expect from a Discworld novel, complete with wannabe-upwardly-mobile vampires, zombie support groups for the dead-but-not-quite-gone contingent, and a reverse wolfman who is a wolf three weeks a month and a man the rest of the time. And let us not forget the last surviving banshee on the Disc who is so afflicted with a speech impediment that he scribbles his wails on a note and slips them under the door.
But these are just the supporting characters to DEATH, keeper of time and reaper of souls. Reaper Man is DEATH's story, filled with surprisingly tender moments scattered amidst the shenanigans at which Pratchett excels.
The skeleton of the plot (sorry!) is that DEATH gets a performance review by cosmic auditors, and they hold that he has developed too much of a personality to do the job properly. In lieu of a golden watch, they give him a golden lifetimer for his retirement. The story then follows his (mis)adventures in dealing with the basics of living, along with sub-plots surrounding the side-effects that crop up on a magical world where everything has stopped dying and the excess life force builds up all over the place. The results are predictably explosive.
What gives the story its greatest appeal (to me, at least), is that Pratchett manages to imbue DEATH with a mixture of naivete, worldliness, nobility and innocence. DEATH understands much about the way the universe of the Discworld operates, but he is hopeless when it comes to giving a woman flowers. He takes pride in collecting souls efficiently, but he is neither cruel nor heartless.

    Great book, poor quality audio
The book was good: Susan and Death are pretty awesome, as are The Band With Rocks In boys. Maybe not one of Pratchett's best novels, but still entertaining.
However, as another reviewer pointed out, getting this on tape would have better quality than this version. It was obviously brought over from a set of cassettes, as it includes long pauses between the "tapes" (not the files). There is even an "end of cassette 1" type message at one point.
I was disappointed that I used a credit on this one. If I'd known about the quality in advance, I would have just picked up a copy of the book and skipped this recording until it was redone.
    Low sound quality
I was disappointed by the audio quality of this book. It was clearly copied from a tape (at one point they failed to edit out a the narrator announcing: "side 3") This is fairly disappointing since you get low level white noise throughout the length of the book. Audible.com usually delivers books at almost CD quality, and this one was just not there.
The book itself is not one of Pratchett's best(still good though). The events in it follow those in "Mort" and "Reaper Man" and precede those in "Hogfather." You do not need to read those to enjoy this one though, the story stands up quite well on it's own.
    Rock and Roll hit Discworld
There's a whole lot of shakin' going on when a champion harpist goes to Ahnk-Morpork to pursue his musical genius. He quickly runs afoul of the Musicians' Guild and when a troll accidentally destroys his ancient harp, it looks like the big, wicked city has devoured another country boy. But instead, with the help of a dwarf horn player and an apologetic troll rock smasher, our hero goes in search for a another instrument. In a strange used instrument shop, he finds an ancient guitar and the Ahnk-Morpork has its first Guitar Hero.
When the guitar begins to play, music will never be the same. Groupies abound, wizards slick back their hair and channel James Dean, the Unseen University librarian gets funky on the organ, and Death's grand-daughter intercedes to save the ax-man from the traditional early death of guitar heroes.
Great fun for early Rock and Roll fans, as you play name that tune from the mono 45, Hot Wax days of rock.
    Classic Pratchett
I listened to this after hearing of Sir Terry's passing, and it is everything I love about his books: witty, charming, insightful, and just when you think it is simple fluff, poignant enough to take your breath away. My only regret is that it is an old production and the sound quality newton.k12.vt.us editing detracts from the pure pleasure of the story.
    Enjoyed immensely
I really enjoyed this book and it drew many smiles and chuckles from me as I caught the jokes and word play. It was a little slow getting started, but once the story kicked in, it was very entertaining. If you like rock & roll, you'll enjoy all the references and side jokes. I thought of one friend immediately that I'd want to share the book with. I think it wouldn't have the same kick in printed form, though. The voices and reading are really great.

    Members Reviews:
    Discworld fans will love it!
You can't help but develop a soft spot for that cowardly wizard, Rincewind. Terry Pratchet has an unsurpassed wit and there couldn't be a more perfect narrator for these novels than Nigel Planer. These two pair up wonderfully for Sorcery. The world is in danger. Can Rincewind save it? You will have a ball finding out!
    odd recording
Losing one star on the rating for the recording and narration . . . Having read and listened to a number of Terry Pratchett's later Discworld stories, as well as the non-Discworld, "Nation", I decided to begin catching up on earlier stories. I listened to The Color of Magic and the Light Fantastic, and now this one. I have noticed a definite maturing of flow and humor from the early books to later ones, and the same applies to the reading by Nigel Planer. (I think I prefer Stephen Briggs, who does the Tiffany Aching Discworld stories.) This particular recording seems second class. The volume and tone quality from one (apparently) recording session to another throughout sections of the book are far from consistent. And, the hollow -metal-room effect of the reading of footnotes is unnecessary and weird. There was a bit of this technic used for the voice of Death in The Color of Magic, too. I think it's a distraction rather than an enhancement. Still, it's tolerable, and as always, Terry Pratchett is amazingly skilled and perceptive, so purchase this one when it's on sale and you won't be wasting any money.
    Great story, bad audio
Another great addition to the series for sure. Rincewind makes a great leading character for a story with this much humor. Pretty much every time he runs into trouble I am chuckling or laughing at his response. Without giving too much away I also enjoyed his partner for this story as well as several of the other characters introduced in this book. The epilogue is especially compelling I think, although I am a total sucker for that anthropomorphic personification Death, so that probably has something to do with why I think that.
I have to take a full star off for the abysmal audio quality here though (I am being generous here - the audio ALMOST ruins the experience). It sounds like it was recorded in someone's basement off of old radio broadcasts. The sound fades and the quality totally changes from one paragraph to the next, perhaps due to different recording sessions. They also use an extremely and unnecessary jarring sound effect for footnotes (I didn't realize they were foot notes until I read some other reviews). It's the same effect they use for Death's voice, but at least it makes some sense in that context, for footnotes it comes totally out of the blue and completely takes you out of the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this sequel to The Lost Gate, best-selling author Orson Scott Card continues his fantastic tale of the mages of Westil, who live in exile on Earth.
Here on Earth, Danny North is still in high school, yet he holds in his heart and mind all the stolen outselves of 13 centuries of gatemages. The Families still want to kill him if they cant control him - and they cant control him; he is far too powerful.
On Westil, Wad is now nearly powerless - he lost everything to Danny in their struggle. Even if he can survive the revenge of his enemies, he must still somehow make peace with the Gatemage Daniel North, for when Danny took that power from Loki, he also took responsibility for the Great Gates. And when he comes face-to-face with the mages who call themselves Bel and Ishtoreth, he will understand just why Loki closed the gates all those centuries ago.
    Critic Reviews:
"Card weaves another in a chain of satisfying, teenager-pleasing fantasies. Card has a grand old time romping around in the fields of comparative religion while letting a feud worthy of the Hatfields and the McCoys unfold, with much tongue-in-cheek humor but a touch of gore, too." (
    Kirkus Reviews)
    "Familiarity with
The Lost Gate is useful, but not essential, as Card gives readers enough background to have at least a partial understanding of the world hes created.Defined characters and a highly imaginative story. For the authors fans, a must-read." (
    Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
Flashes of Great, Ok, and Bad. Overall: Meh.
    What I liked:
Card manages to put together a fairly interesting structure of magic and how that creates the major conflict that drives the story. His exploration of the way magic works and the way that the characters discover it is quite interesting. His take on ancient pantheons as magic-wielding aliens come to earth is also insightful, forcing the reader to completely shift her thinking. The reader encounters plenty of unexpected actions and circumstances and that is all to the good. The book is unpredictable and that is enough to keep you listening.
    The Ok:
The main character, Danny, is a retooling of the "super-powered teenager trying to lead a normal life" (as in My Secret Identity, Smallville, etc.) genre. Which goes ok, maybe even a little bit better than average with Danny's well-developed intellect, but complete ignorance of actual teenage interaction making for very appropriate awkwardness. Unfortunately, the high school friends he interacts with feel like they're made of cardboard. They seem developed only just enough that the story can move forward.
Also Wad's story line of protecting his world from incoming mages and looking for a way to get revenge on his former lover is not bad. Not great, but not bad; interesting, but haphazard. It's one notch above only existing to be the reflection of Danny's own magical discovery.
If the following things bother you, steer clear:
Rudniki should not be narrating this book. He has a less than versatile deep bass voice. This isn't particularly ideal for a coming of age novel where many of the characters are youths. Not to say that his voice is not pleasant, he just doesn't have the range to characterize teenagers and women. Rankin has a better range, but doesn't make bold characterizations.
This book bogs down around the various characters' banter.

Ben found himself outcast, no longer recognized by any friend, though all his powerful enemies seemed to know him. Without the medallion, he couldn't seek the help of the Paladin against Meeks. There was only the prism cat - whatever that might be!
And where was Willow - and the mysterious black unicorn she'd set out to find?
    Critic Reviews:
"This sequel...contains the same welcome touches of humor as its predecessor and confirms Brooks's talent for light fantasy." (Library Journal)

    The excelence continues.
A year had passed since Ben Holiday had crossed from Earth to the magical realm of Landover. The sickness that plagued the land at the time of his arrival has been expunged, the magic restored. Now, however, Ben finds himself travelling back to Earthh in response to a disturbing dream that seemed to hint that his former law partner and closest friend Miles Bennett was in need of help. Questor Thews, the ill-trained but steadfast court magician, travels to an ancient fortress wherein he believes he will find a pair of ancient books of magic. The lovely Sylph Willow has a mission of her own, find a bridle of spun gold, the only object capable of binding a mysterious black Unicorn, a being of Landoverian myth widely believed not to be a true unicorn but a demon whose presence corrupts those who look upon it. Upon visiting Earth, however, Ben finds Miles doing splendidly and glad of the visit. Upon returning to Landover, Ben discovers that he had an uninvited passenger. The former court wizard Meeks, half-brother to Questor and the one who had sold him the throne of Landover inthe first place, has returned to the realm and now exiles Ben from his own castle, though not before placing a spell on him that makes him unrecognizable to his friends. He has also assumed Ben's appearance and, thanks to Questor, gained possession of the missing books of magic and now needs only the bridle of spun gold in order to capture the black unicorn, whatever it may be, for some unknown but undoubtedly sinister purpose. Can Ben find a way to regain the trust of his friends and thwart the treacherous wizard's plans before it's too late?
Once again narrator Dick Hill does an excellent job of bringing life to a great story. As with Magic Kingdom, I found it very hard to stop listening. This is definitely one narrator who could probably do justice to just about anything he reads.
I was part of the group quest! GREAT LISTEN
This was an amazing listen. I am a huge fan of Terry Brooks - especially his Landover Series -
Grab a pillow and blanket, stoke the fire and settle in for a great night of listening.
    Good book, bad reading
I enjoyed the story, as I do with all of Terry Brooks stories, but I could not enjoy the reading of this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
This box set contains the first three books in the best-selling Nia Rivers Adventures by Jasmine Walt and Ines Johnson. This action-packed series features an immortal archaeologist and her tomb-raiding sidekick as they uncover lost artifacts, tangle with Greek gods, cross swords with Templar Knights, and much more!
The first three books in this box set include:
Meet Nia Rivers: archaeologist, fashionista, and an ancient immortal with a serious memory problem.
For the last couple of centuries, Nia has been trying to fill in the blanks of her past by shedding light on history's darkest stories. Her motto: the ugliest stories are the ones that deserve to be told the most.
But when a mysterious woman comes forth with a 200-year-old relic from Nia's past, Nia isn't sure if the story connected to it is one she wants told to the world. Unfortunately, Nia has no choice but to uncover the truth - fast - before a greedy land developer buries the site forever. The fact that he's also an immortal, with a millennia-old grudge against her, doesn't help. Neither do the dark assassins who have been stalking her for centuries, and who've suddenly decided to up their game to end her life.
Letting her enemies have their way might be best for Nia, especially when the truth might expose a horrific crime from Nia's past. But all stories deserve to be told.
    Even the ugliest ones.
Even if they say you might be a mass murderer.
Nia Rivers knows that immortality comes at a cost. So when she finds out that the Greek gods have devised a way to offer everlasting life to humans, she heads down to Athens to find out more about the mysterious cult of Demeter.
What she doesn't expect to learn about is her own involvement in the rituals.
With her bestie, Loren, by her side, Nia must determine if the Olympians are the righteous gods they proclaim to be, or the villains in this chapter of history. The broken heart she's still nursing isn't helping. But if Nia can't get her head in the game, the Titans will rise again, and the souls of all humans on Earth will be at risk....
When an ancient relic of Camelot goes missing, who do Arthur and his knights call? Nia Rivers, ancient immortal and archaeologist extraordinaire, of course!
Nia jumps at the chance to go to Camelot, especially since she's been banned in the past. Thankfully, Arthur is willing to let Nia's past breaches of his castle, theft attempts, and a certain debacle with his sword be bygones if she'll help him recover the Holy Grail. But as Nia strives to keep her fingers to herself, enemies from the past resurface in a race to acquire the ancient holy relic.

    WONDERFUL!
this is an amazing new series! I love jasmine walts other books so I was very excited to read this!
Nia Rivers is a badass immortal who has forgotten her past but is still being haunted by it. I love the problems that she has to deal with being immortal, such as have trouble deciphering her own handwriting from thousands of years ago.
Zan, Tres, and Loren each add something to the story. They each have their own personalities and this book gives you a glimpse into each of their pasts.
