Troy Billings, at six-foot-one, 296 pounds, is standing at the edge of a subway platform, seriously contemplating suicide, when he meets Curt MacCrae - and emaciated, semi-homeless punk guitar genius who also happens to be a dropout legend at Troy's high school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

"I saved your life, " Curt tells Troy. "You owe me lunch."

But lunch with Curt brings more than he bargained for. Suddenly, Troy finds himself recruited as Curt's drummer for his new band. "We'll be called Rage/Tectonic. Sort of a punk rock, Clash sort of thing," Curt tells him

There's only one problem. Troy can't play the drums. Oh yes, and Troy's father thinks Curt's a drug addict. And Troy's brother thinks Troy's a loser.

But with Curt, anything is possible. "You'll see," says Curt. "We're going to be HUGE." Fortunately, mercurial Curt has an energy, enthusiam, and wisdom that is as irresistible as it is contagious. Before long, Troy is swept up by his desire to be everything Curt belives him to be.

I really like this book

This book expresses feeling emotion and actions that Troy and Curt make. I 99% recommended this book to most middle schools. I approve of this great fantastic book

Wonderful book, excellent movie!

I really loved the story. It had such a big impact on me. I really connected to the main character, Tory Billings. Not as a 6'1", 296 lb teenager, but as someone who didn't fit in and couldn't really find their place in life throughout school before I fell into more of the punk scene. I saw the movie before I read the book. It was very well done! It mirrors the book very well! To listen to the audiobook being read by Matthew Lillard, the director of the movie, was a perfect combination. He reads it so well and so smoothly! Loved it!

Matthew Lillard stole the show!

What made the experience of listening to Fat Kid Rules the World the most enjoyable?

I thought Matthew Lillard brought this story to life. I could really believe the characters and the experiences and the thought process.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fat Kid Rules the World?

The ending. To prevent spoilers, I won't give it away. But I liked how the story ended. Every path each character took, each growth, led to this pivotal moment.

What does Matthew Lillard bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The life of the characters

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were multiple moments. There were moments I could laugh with Troy and moments my heart broke for him and for Curt.

Well done!

This story was extremely interesting and heartbreaking. The narration was very well done, too. Wish it was a little longer. Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry.

Waste of Time and Money

I don't know what made me buy this book in the first place- but I'm sorry I did. The main character is whiny and unrelatable and the writing is choppy at best. The writer just focused on the wrong part of the story; I know the book is called "After" but I think it would have been semi-readable if she'd given us a better idea of what came "Before". I get the sense that I'm supposed to like the main character but everything the writer tells us about her is absolutely unlikeable. I think the author's editors did her a disservice- this story had potential but it flopped.

Better luck next time!

Members Reviews:

Corpus bones! What a great heroine.

Really great historical fiction for anybody, but if you are a feminist parent looking for good books for you children, I don't think you could do better than Karen Cushman's work. The medieval heroine of this one is esp. hilarious: "Now my father, the toad, conspires to sell me like a cheese to some lack-wit seeking a wife. . . Corpus bones! He comes to dine with us in two days' time. I plan to cross my eyes and drool in my meat." Narrator Jenny Sterlin really does Catherine justice: Plays her straight, which makes for great comedy.

Amazing

I've loved this book since I was a kid. It never gets old! Karen Cushman's story is thoughtful and Jenny Sterlin's performance is awesome. Definitely recommend.

Title: The Joys of Love

Author: Madeleine L'Engle

Narrator: Maggie-Meg Reed

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 4 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-29-08

Publisher: Macmillan Audio

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 15 votes

Genres: Teens, Fiction & Literature

Publisher's Summary:

She's never felt so alive. And soon she finds another passion: Kurt Canitz, the dashing young director of the company, who is the first man Elizabeth's ever kissed who has really meant something to her. Then Elizabeth's perfect summer is profoundly shaken when Kurt turns out not to be the kind of man she thought he was.

Moving and romantic, this coming-of-age story was written during the 1940s. As revealed in an introduction by the author's granddaughter, Léna Roy, the protagonist, Elizabeth, is close to an autobiographical portrait of L'Engle herself as a young woman - "vibrant, vulnerable, and yearning for love and all that life has to offer".

Critic Reviews:

"Teens...will warm to the author's characteristic, slice-to-the-heart expressions of emotion, while the realistic portrayal of the summer-stock theater scene will draw aspiring actors." (

favourite book so far

I have been listening to these books as a cheap end easy way to pass the time while I do other things. I've found the earlier books to be just about tolerable story-wise, with great performances from the narrator. But, this book was actually an interesting story too. A closer look at the impact of drug use and explorations of sexuality. It will be interesting to see where the Georgina character goes too
