Genius

DBC Pierre has a style all his own & it's one you don't want to miss.

If you've read Vernon God Little & enjoyed it, you'll like this one too. It's crazy - but what else would you expect from this "one of a kind" author?

Gabriel is not a character you are going to love - at least, not right away. He's a substance abuser, and he's not making life easy for those around him. Gabriel has decided to die - but now that he's made the decision, he realises he doesn't have to do it right away. First he's going to have one last wild boozy, party with a friend.

Except that's not quite how things work out. His best friend ends up in prison in Japan after the most bizarre sequence of events. And Gabriel's attempts to get his friend out of prison result in another bizarre series of events.

While the details of the story are unimaginable (for most of us at least), in the context of the story they are utterly believable & compelling & once again I found myself having to tell my husband what mad thing had just happened in the book.

This is another DBC Pierre book I did not want to put down. It's funny-crazy.

If you're looking for eloquent satire, you have found your author.

The sound quality is good, the reader does a great job with the characters & oh boy you're in for such a fun ride.

Wonderful!

Books like this are the reason I keep renewing my Audible membership. DBC Pierre's best by a mile - totally original, compelling, funny, dark and brilliantly narrated. Wished it would never stop!

Odd - in a good way

For the first part of this story I was half-thinking I might give it up but it grew on me. The second half is, I think, much better than the first. It is sort of up my street in that I like dark humour - this is pitch-black and amusing rather than actually funny. It's also wry, touching, crude (content - but not needlessly) and really beautifully written. Good narration, quite 'flat' especially in the first 1/4 - but then that reflects the state of mind of the story-teller. Brilliant accents. The ending was not at all what I expected - it was better.

Cheap thrills

DBC Pierre is a bit of a one trick pony. Drug-fuelled psychosis is a bit of a drag really and although it is imaginative and pretty original it is not very enjoyable or interesting to read because it has no light and shade and no heart.

A truly mad story

I thoroughly enjoyed this romp through the internal world of a rather disturbed mind. It took a little time to get into the story, mainly, I think, because I found the reader, William Rycroft, hard to get used to, but once the story gripped me I stopped hearing the things that irritated me, and I must say his german accents were excellent. I am looking forward to hearing another of D B C Pierre's books.

Leonard Lessing - stage name Lennie Less - is a saxophone player who has lost his zest for playing, lost the zest in his marriage, and lost the zest for engagement. So he's taking a break. An extended one that has his wife increasingly impatient with him, and he knows it. He also knows she is right. Then one day, Lennie sees a face on the news (he's a news and media junkie) that is straight out of the past, and he's jarred. Back in the day....

Well, I should say the novel takes place in a future world, but one not unrecognizable, not too far into the future: 2024. An odd, but interesting choice. That world, 14 years on from our own, hasn't changed all that much, except in subtle ways. Personal freedoms seem to have been reduced, but not so that most people recognize that fact. If the loss of personal freedoms is a creeping loss, then this is what it would look like. "Security" and the forces that keep us "safe" seem to have grown, in the same creeping way. We've (they) have accepted it as the price necessary.

So. Back in the day is 2006, and Lennie had spent some time in Austin, Texas with Max and his girlfriend Nadia in that year. Max had befriended Nadia in England and had his own designs on her, but upon arrival in Austin, he found her living with Max. The three of them were political activists: Max of the radical and confrontational kind, Lennie of the more muted variety, with ""Red" Nadia somewhere between the two. When Max had left Austin (not on the best of terms with either of them), he had not seen them since. But now there was Max on the television, right in the middle of a hostage taking. He decides to go to the scene of the crisis (Max had not yet been identified).

On the way there in his car, he listens to an old concert of his. Here, and elsewhere throughout the book, the writing on music is vivid and informed. These are my favorite parts of the novel. Crace really shows his chops here.

When he arrives, he finds he has been beaten to the identification by Max's estranged daughter, Lucy. Nadia had been pregnant with Lucy when he left Austin. Lennie is talked into a scheme cooked up by Lucy, but backs out before it can be put into action. He gets cold feet, blaming his wife Francine for his reticence. A sofa activist - an acronym that Lucy runs with.

Crace also writes effectively on the relationship between Lennie and his wife, which is complicated, but loving. They bicker a bit, and though it's all a bit stale, it's still a solid marriage. Francine's daughter Celandine from a previous marriage had left the house many months prior, without a word since.

try it-you will really like it...

I really enjoyed this audio book. The narrators were perfect for their characters-which made the characters more believable.

There was never a point where I wanted to move onto a different book or story-I had to read it to the end.

Disappointing drivel!

It is official....Lillian Jackson Braun has run out of ideas! That is the only reasonable conclusion to which I can come having just finished the Audible version of this "story". Disjointed and with no real point to the tale, this book is a complete disappointment. I have quite enjoyed her earlier "Cat Who" books but this is utter rubbish. There are a couple of incidents in the story which may be crimes but nothing ever develops with these. Save your money & don't bother with this one. Braun's earlier works are much better.

What happened next!

Would you listen to The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers again? Why?

I have listened or read most of the stories in this series and this was the last published before the author sadly died.

What about George Guidalls performance did you like?

I love GG's voice. It's soothing.

The author seems to have decided to mix things up with the characters that appear in most of the stories. But as she died, we are left wondering what she had planned. Frustrating!

Beautifully read but the story is a bit disjointed

Qwill and Polly appear to be moving on and the usual far fetched small town happenings in this, less than her best The Cat Who. A disappointment.

Capella's 4th novel shares the expected aspects of his other books: sensuous food and delicious sex. But each of his 4 books is so different in plot and tone - and "The Empress of Ice Cream," like his others, is a total delight. Royal mistress Louise de Keroualle and her Italian admirer Carlo Demirco - who is obsessed with the creation and perfection of a new-fangled confection, ice cream - create splashes both political and personal at the Restoration court of Charles II. The end of this wonderful novel is unexpected, tender and perfect.

A charm

I love this author.He writes with humor and great sensuality.His descriptions are so powerful that one is able to smell the coffee he describes, or in this case taste the ice-cream .The Empress of Ice Cream is an historical novel ,giving the reader an insight into the various courts of Europe.It is also a sensual romance.Having read all his other books ,I bought this on kindle and saved it for a special read,which it is.

Fun Historical Fiction

I am really enjoying this book. Who knew ice cream was such an important part of politics? This story of Charles in England and Louis in France is a great insight into the time after Cromwell. You don't even have to like history to enjoy the intrigues of courtiers and the development of ice cream. A fun and informative read.

Disappointing

I wasn't very impressed with this storyline. Wouldn't recommend. Story didn't grab me but I read it to the end because someone else recommended it to me and I was hoping it would get better. It didn't.

Empress of ice cream

I like the book...and the story ..second Capella novel I've read...not as good as the wedding Officer..but delightful to read.

Brilliant

I know this is probably more of a summer read, but it was just the thing I needed to get me through cold miserable London mornings - sex, glamour, scandal, mystery... what's not to love! Perhaps her best yet?

Good book - poor narrator

Couldn't stand the accents/intonations used by this narrator. They were very poor - I am an adult, and do not want to hear silly voices! Why don't these people just read the book?!

Very good listen

Only thing that confuses a little is the voice of the men all sound the same. Voices of female characters and overall narration good, but voices of the men could have been better. Think narrator needs to avoid multiple male characters in same scenes as hard to differentiate until 'said miles' etc but overall is still worth a listen.

Boring

Tried but couldn't even make to the end of this book. I normally enjoy Tasmina Perry but this was not good reading. Maybe the narrator didn't help but not for me.

Slapdash Chronicle

I struggled with a busy schedule to find the time to read... however, half-way through I took time out to read Cheever?s short story The Swimmer which, actually, is head and shoulders above this novel. The literary acclaim which surrounds The Wapshot Chronicle seems disproportionate to the actual achievement contained in this novel - for a start I don?t think by any means it is within the top 60 books of the Twentieth Century. Equally, the fear - which it is claimed has been completely countered, that the novel is simply a collection of short-stories strung together by a connecting theme of family and the individual members thereof - doesn?t seem in my view to stand up to scrutiny either. This is a long, rambling tome which at times is really quite entertaining and at other times drifts into mediocrity of a sort that is not a feature of Cheever?s concentrated short story form. Worth reading to get the whole picture on John Cheever, but I?m pretty certain that his reputation lies in his short-story achievement and will continue to do so.
