    Title: King of the Badgers
    Author: Philip Hensher
    Narrator: Mike Rogers
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-31-11
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
After the success of The Mulberry Empire and The Northern Clemency, which was short-listed for the 2008 Man Booker Prize, Philip Hensher brings us the peaceful civility and spiralling paranoia of the small English town of Handsmouth.
Usually a quiet and undisturbed place situated on an estuary, Handsmouth becomes the centre of national attention when an eight-year-old girl vanishes. The town fills with journalists and television crews, who latch onto the public's fearful suspicions that the missing girl, the daughter of one of the town's working-class families, was abducted.
This tragic event serves to expose the range of segregated existences in the town, as spectrums of class, wealth, and lifestyle are blurred in the investigation. Behind Handsmouth's closed doors and pastoral façade the extraordinary individual lives of the community are exposed. The undisclosed passions of a quiet international aid worker are set against his wife, a woman whose astonishing aptitude for intellectual pursuits, such as piano-playing and elaborate cooking, makes her seem a paragon of virtue to the outside world. A recently widowed old woman tells a story that details her late discovery of sexual gratification. And the Bears - middle-aged, fat, hairy gay men, given to promiscuity and some drug abuse - have a party.
As the search for the missing girl elevates, the case enables a self-appointed authority figure to present the case for increased surveillance, and, as old notions of privacy begin to crack, private lives seep into the public well of knowledge.
Handsmouth is a powerful study of the vital importance of individuality, the increasingly intrusive hand of political powers, and the unyielding strength of Nature against the worst excesses of human behaviour.
    Critic Reviews:
"Hensher has a forensic eye for detail, providing nightmarish glimpses of the everyday. engrossing, amusing and moving." (The Independant)
    Members Reviews:
    State of England
I enjoyed this one very much couldn't stop listening once I started. Hensher's a smooth, but not mechanical, plotter, and has a lovely eye for rural detail. I liked all his characters, even the quite dastardly ones, and felt with them throughout. Just the kind of state-of-England novel I was in the mood for, not as formally or stylistically inventive as Martin Amis (thank goodness for that), nor as ultimately forgettable as J K Rowling's The Casual Vacancy, to which Badgers bears several uncanny resemblances in its setting and manner (it was published quite a few years before, I should add).
Mike Rogers was the perfect reader, just the right wry tone, and (though I'm no authority) a goodly range in accents Yorkshire, West Country, generic gentry, bolshy teenager. I recommend it without qualification.
    Multi-faceted novel written for adults
If you could sum up King of the Badgers in three words, what would they be?
    Complex, contemporary, intelligent.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sam the cheesemonger, because I readily identified with him - as an urbane gay man vegetating in a dismal semi-rural setting.
What does Mike Rogers bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Nothing specific; although he is an excellent narrator with a good command of dialect.

    Critic Reviews:
"McCann traps us in her web of gradual revelation...an intensely enjoyable experience." (Guardian Review)
    Members Reviews:
    I little unconvincing.
I have recently read Wolf Hall and hoped for a similarly rewarding experience. I didn't find the plot and characters of The Wilding fully convincing. Although some of the content is clearly aimed at adults, the tone and style reminded me of fiction pitched for younger readers. I found the recurring dream device a bit week, but I did keep on to the end to see how the mystery would resolve . The central character is rather lightweight and I found some others two dimensional .
The descriptions of cider making were interesting and full of colourful language and there were other well described domestic details.
I'm not sure if the narration contributed to my lack of engagement with the characters. I think he was
    doing his best.

    Messages clear, story underwhelming
Would you try another book from Rob Stennett and/or Adam Black?
I might try another book from this author, but I'd probably choose something else first.
If you???ve listened to books by Rob Stennett before, how does this one compare?
This is the first book I have listened to by this author.
Which character ??? as performed by Adam Black ??? was your favorite?
Mr. black is a good narrator. He did his job well, which means all of my focus was on the book and its characters rather than on his style.
Do you think Homemade Haunting needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, I don't think this book makes a good seed for a series.
    Any additional comments?
There were things I liked about the story. The author illustrated common understanding among many Christians about how the spirit world works, while also poking a little fun at some of the more radical approaches to dealing with it. Overall though, I found the story line a bit simplistic, It's themes and imagery might have come an illustrative book on how to write a cheap horror novel. If I were to recommend it, it would be to Christian parents who want to warn their sufficiently mature children of the dangers of dabbling in the occult in a non-threatening way.

    Such a let-down
I love NM's better known books and also her biographies. This however is just too dated and actually rather boring. The reader did quite well, but there are too many accents - Russian, German, Welsh (I think) Scottish, estuary and received English, on it goes - I gave up in chapter 3. Waste of money

    not one of her best
    Any additional comments?
I usually like ruth Hamilton books but I didn't like this as much as the others I have listened to. in fact I stuggled to the end because it was a ruth Hamilton book.
there wasn't any humour, which is what I look forward to, and I felt I was being preached to at certain points in the story. opinions were put in the mouths of the characters that didn't ring true in the situation.
please ruth bring back the scouse humour and the grittiness that makes them who they are.
marlene sideway did her usual good job of performing the story.

Witty and vivid accounts of life in the latter half of the 20th century
I couldn't stop listening to these monologues after I started. For full disclosure, I should say that I discovered them because the writer happens to be my aunt. But regardless of that, I can wholeheartedly recommend them. They paint a vivid and entertaining picture of an independent minded woman's life in the South of the UK around the 60's and 70's. I originally planned to listen to them one at a time, but they were just so absorbing and beautifully read that I was unable to do anything else until I was finished. Perfect if you're planning to spend an evening at home by the fire or a day off work.
