    Publisher's Summary:
For years space telescopes had found four nearby stars very promising. The first fleet consisted of three crafts faster than anything ever built. Their mission was to visit them to survey for possible habitable worlds. More advanced, the second fleet was planned to be launched decades later with the goal of landing on alien worlds. Fifty years beyond that, the third fleet would carry a cargo of frozen colonists. Everything went as planned until the crews of first fleet woke up near their selected stars. Sometime during the long interstellar voyage, Earth had stopped transmitting. Were they still listening? There was no sign of the second or third fleets. All that was certain was that they were all alone.

    Solid science, good book.
Excellent, well written book where the science makes sense. Promising start to the series. Quick plot synopsis: Earth sends starships out to start finding colonizable planets, crewed by electronic copies of crew. Three starships are sent, and this book follows the adventures of the three crews. The ending promises much interesting follow-on on the rest of the series, and the logic of "what if we sent starships on 400 year journeys?" is solid, with well thought out consequences.
    Good read, kind of short
Good read, but it seemed more like an outline for what could've been a much longer book. I found the stories of the duplicate crews interesting. The expectation that I had for all the crews would be that they would pretty much all act the same. However, the author paints them as all being distinct individuals, despite all being clones of their flesh and blood selves. I'd like to see a follow on book for this.
I enjoyed the three different crew stories
Enjoyable read. I found it to be a very interesting concept. I enjoyed the three different crew stories. An author not to be over looked.
    Avoid
what a lot of rubbish. obviously there is a new category of authors paid to bang out any old rubbish for Amazon. Spelling and grammar was irritatingly poor, the book didn't come across as being proof-read and the less said about the plot and development thereof the better. Please may I have my 99p back because it's been taken under false pretences!

Lots and lots of space battles
If you like Sci-Fi military dramas, this will not disappoint! I complained the first book would not stand alone. This book does a much better job. But at the end it leaves lots of questions. Some books do that to leave things in suspense. It could also be an opening for a third book to form a trilogy, although that seems unlikely (but if it happens, I would buy it).
It seems like this series is a hidden gem for sci-fi battle buffs. But if you like that style like I do, this is a fun little series.
    Excellent
Very good an old story arc nicely done. Man fighting a militarily stronger alien enemy that wishes man kinds destruction.
    a hidden jem indeed
Would you listen to Exodus: Empires at War, Book 2 again? Why?
yes i believe this is a story on par with the lost fleet series
    Any additional comments?
i suggest you read this if your looking for a good book to read this is an unknown series for the most part but well worth the money
    Very good
this series is riveting. good story , each book is a good , long nail bitting read
    Good book
I really do love this series of novels and and the narrator is very good although his female voices sound a bit squeaky to my ears.

    Publisher's Summary:
Mars is a colonial world governed by corporate interests on Earth. The citizens of Mars are hardworking, brave, and intelligent, but held back by their lack of access to the best education, and the desire of Earthly powers to keep the best inventions for themselves.
The young Martians - the second and third generation born on Mars - have little loyalty to Earth and a strong belief that their planet can be independent. The revolution begins slowly, but matures to its inevitable conclusion.
    Critic Reviews:
"It all adds up to a blowout of a book, perhaps the best of the recent Mars novels, and certainly one of the best sf novels of the year." (Publishers Weekly)
"Moving Mars is an accomplished, thoroughly mature novel that should be placed at the top of anyone's `to be read' stack." (Science Fiction Age)
"Stunning and remarkable invention and extrapolation." (Kirkus Reviews)

    One of my favorites
This has always been one of my favorite books and I was very happy that Audible added it to it's library (the original tapes were dual track and had terrible sound quality). Greg Bear is one of those hard science authors that can write compelling believable characters and not bury you under a high tech facade. The science itself is amazing and high concept. Bear tends to write more contemporary, near future Scifi these days and I love his books, but Moving Mars is top form traditional Scifi.
    Terrible quality audio recording
I read the book 20 years ago and enjoyed it. This audiobook is terrible quality, heavy bass, inconsistent volume levels, cut off sentences. Very low bit rate. Audible seriously needs to put up a quality version of this book. I'm asking for a refund.
    Good book, odd recording
The story is interesting. As usual in a hard science fiction book, there's a fair amount of discussion of technicalities, but it's very interesting. Bear's writing style is a bit mechanical, he is in no way a prose stylist and his characters are a bit on the stiff side, but both are used well to drive the story. My only complaint is the recording itself. It sounds like it's been compressed to within an inch of its life, it occasionally sounds like its being read by a computer. It's also muffled sounding like it was first recorded on cassette. It's not horrible but its annoying, particularly if you listen on headphones.
    Good Bear
This is a good Greg Bear story, although it takes most of the book before getting into the more mindbending hard SF elements that I like most in his work. I found the narrator's voice a touch shrill, and the recording wasn't the best, but I acclimated to it after a bit, allowing me to enjoy the story. My main gripe with Greg Bear audiobooks is that my favorites aren't available, namely the EON series and the Queen of Angels series. THESE were the books that really blew me away. Oh, and also Forge of God and Anvil of Stars were excellent as well. So, as the title says, it's just good Bear, but not the best, in this listeners' humble opinion.
    Digital artifacts in audio
Parts of this book are hard to follow due to poor audio quality and very noticeable digital artifacts in the audio stream. Come on, Audible! You can do better than this!

    Impressive world building
If you like epic space opera with imaginatively detailed world-building and a focus on characters rather than gadgets, try In Conquest Born, C.S. Friedmans extremely impressive first novel. This complex, sprawling story begins with the births of two enemies-to-be from two different worlds that have been fighting each other for generations:
Zatar, a Braxin, is bred for beauty and aggression because those are the qualities his brutal, elitist, and misogynist culture admires. Ruthless, clever, and perfectly poised, he is preparing himself and his world for his ascendancy to a throne that does not yet exist in his oligarchic government. Part of making himself most qualified for this potential position involves manipulating, discrediting, or simply getting rid of any man who might stand in his way. (Women are no threat in Braxa or are they?)
Anzha is an outsider in her Azean society because of her red hair its an indication of foreign blood somewhere in her lineage. Nonetheless, her psychic powers, which are revered in Azea, are strong and that, along with her unrelenting drive to prepare herself for revenge against the Braxin man who killed her parents, causes her to rise up in the Azean military ranks. When Zatar and Anzha finally meet, they each know they have met their match, and they immediately set out to destroy each other.
C.S. Friedman began building her worlds while she was in high school and continued developing them for years before submitting In Conquest Born to DAW. It shows. The world-building is excellent both the Braxin and Azean societies (and others) are deeply explored from multiple perspectives. Among other things, each has its own art forms, attitudes toward women, sexual preferences, inherited strengths and weaknesses, and ideas about genetic manipulation and psychic abilities.
Friedman explains on her website that In Conquest Born originally began as a collection of interconnected stories which she developed into a novel which was partly re-written when her editor encouraged her to make the tale less fragmented. Still, the story feels somewhat disjointed because it covers a huge span of time (its a long time before Zatar and Anzha actually meet) and each chapter is a vignette told from one of several perspectives. This technique is advantageous in that it allows us to thoroughly explore Friedmans worlds, but has the disadvantage of causing us to spend a lot of time with minor, and often expendable, characters. (But then, Zatar and Anzha are repulsive enough that its nice to have a break from them.)
Friedmans plot is exciting theres political intrigue, treason, space battles, torture, planet explosions, and horrible deaths. The compelling plot is made even more readable by Friedmans pleasantly sophisticated writing style which contains just a touch of black humor. She gives us lots to think about, too nature vs. nurture, free will, parallel evolution, genetic modification. If I had liked her characters better and had been effortlessly carried along by a more cohesive plot, Id have surely given In Conquest Born my highest recommendation. I have no doubt that C.S.

Read book 1 first but awesome (tho hard to follow)
I'm going to have to go back & read the first one. I'm loving it so far but I feel like I'm missing allot of the back story. It's written from the point of view of numerous people. I don't understand "the taking" so ..............it's definitely worth getting the first one to get up to speed! Love the narrator! given free for honest review
    This Second Installment was excellent
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes. Fast moving round characters.
Have you listened to any of Dylan Whites other performances before? How does this one compare?
Clear delivery. I was able to understand her pronunciation, and I enjoyed her style.
Dylan White shows us how it's done by his performance of Natalie Wright's book "H.A.L.F."
This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review."
The country experiences change , expressed thru characters I can relate to. The alien and time warps bring a sense of fantasy that is held in check by our believable characters. Overall one great series you can truly enjoy, I did.
book two is where its at!!
ok so I got the first book because I saw it was cheap and scfi which I love and after getting done with book I was like that's a good book but book two?! this is where the story really gets going! where we learn who each character really is! not to mention when things were not what they seemed ;) get these books and get the audio narration! its a great way to really get into the story! the narrator give everyone such character and brings the pages to life!!
This Series is getting Better and Better
This is a great book and so far as me in love with the entire series concept fall in love with halfs almost from the start. The writer envelops you into the world of the HALFs and it is a story unlike others I have read. Great Premise and if you like SciFi with a little "magic" this book will scratch that itch.

Larry enjoyed raising cattle on his Kansas farm, until the aliens arrived. He couldn't help himself; he was going for a ride with aliens from outer space! The aliens wouldn't tell him where he was going, how long he would be gone, or if he was ever coming back, but a space trip sounded like more fun than beer and burgers at Benny's Been There and Done That Bar and Grill. He had to go. Larry's ride into deep space wasn't just a Sunday jaunt. This space-faring species was in danger of being wiped off the galactic map. They offered Larry a ride because his assistance was vital to their survival, but they were xenophobic to the point of barely tolerating Larry in the same room. He was willing to help, but what could he do? Could he live long enough to save himself? What skills did Larry have to save an alien species threatened with annihilation? Every time he asked them for information, they stonewalled him.

    Fun
A nice twist on Farmboy Abducted by Aliens. The farmboy is a grown man who has a sense of humor. He basically volunteers to be abducted; doesn't everyone want a chance to go into space? As a farmer he has the can-do attitude of people who have to problem solve everyday and take care of business.
There are plenty of twists to keep the plot from becoming trite. The aliens are vegetarians who are terrified of a species that eats meat. The threat they need help with stems from their inability to think like a predator.
The author has a nice sense of humor so it is an enjoyable read. Cows are telepaths that receive only, and then forget. Inanimate objects have opinions. So call it quirky and light. The aliens get their problem solved and he gets a spaceship. It won't win writing awards. Some plot points are strained. I didn't really buy the ending but it isn't a deal breaker.
    don't waste your money.
the story is stupid and seems to drone on forever. there seems to be no point to it. the narrator is horrible and seems to be reading it and trying to be cute.
    unique
Very different from what I was expecting, lots of snark and clever references. fun but just not what I was expecting.
    huh?
what's up with the anti government thing at the end? the story was okay but the story got a little fox news-ie at the end which soured my view.

    Wonderful storytelling
Great book - enjoyed it immensely. Fun introduction to new characters in the Star Watch universe. Can't wait for the next one.
not as good as the others
I love the series, but this one was not as good as any of the others. I hope the next one is as good or better than this one.
    Great performance, plot, lacking
The performance was excellent. The story had lots of unlikely events. Then again, it is science fiction. If all things were likely, I probably wouldn't have been interested.
Like most stories in books, TV, and movies, the heroes are pushed to the edge, then an unlikely circumstance or event redeems the situation. That happens almost, but not quite, to the point of tedium. However, I keep coming back. So, the story is doing what it is supposed to do. It keeps me coming back.

The most successful and controversial Cuban science fiction writer of all time, Yoss (aka José Miguel Sánchez Gómez) is known for his acerbic portraits of the island under Communism. In his best-selling A Planet for Rent, Yoss pays homage to Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles and 334 by Thomas M. Disch. A critique of Cuba in the 90s, after the fall of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, A Planet for Rent marks the debut in English of an astonishingly brave and imaginative Latin American voice.

    A big mean universe!
I think that Yoss is an extraordinary writer with great depth and knowledge of The Human Condition. I also belive that he is very much a citizen of Cuba which like most countries in that it is a microcosm of the planet Earth.
I wish that he would indulge his readers with more of the science of his fiction but his bleak vision of one tiny world at odds with a big, mean, magical universe is well worth the read.

While meeting the author was an adventure itself, the book took me to a journey i did not expect!
This should be sold as a tourist guide to Cuba!
While its an amazing bit iof science fiction, the problems the author raise in the book, are what Cubans experience in their day to day lives!

Sixteen-year-old Luke was trapped in Chicago when the lights went out and civilization began to unravel. Determined to get home to his family, Luke begins a 1,000-mile odyssey that will show him the depths of human depravity while also giving him a chance at redemption. Luke is already haunted by what he has seen, and he fears what is yet to come as he takes on a partner in his travels. This is not a romance tale or a zombie story or a book about the end of the world. The world will still be here after civilization falls. This is a story about a boy who becomes a man in the most trying of times, and this story is filled with the violence of those lawless times.

    Bitter Disappointment
I love PA fiction. I really do. This book, however, was poorly written and the story is not good. I listened to both the first and second book (my usual policy) and I finally gave up. The writer is clearly young and seems to be writing fantasy scenarios. It's like his alter ego. The protagonist is 16 and has no attachment to the real world at all. He is 16 but has the skill set of Rambo. He is the ultimate predator. Kills at will and doesn't break a sweat. He knows everything about survival. There is little about his backstory to justify it other than his dad taught him. He was also a master scientist which is where the book starts (he was at an International Science Fair) and an excellent football player. A master of Judo, weapons, science, survival, history, and diplomacy...all at 16. Women swoon (literally) at him, adults ask for his advice and follow it mindlessly. He saves a 14 year old girl from rapists and makes an attempt to be modest and not have a romantic interest in her. This lasts all of chapter before they become official. He proceeds to call her "Babe" and "Sweetheart" and say very cliched things like "Don't worry baby...I'll come back for you". In book 2, our superhuman 16 year old saves a group of cheerleaders...Anyway you get the drift. This should be marketed as a fantasy diary .
The narrator deserves his own special review for just how poorly he did. Our southern superhero teen protagonist has an alternating accent between super country bumpkin and New England yankee (clearly where the narrator is from). I literally will make sure never to listen to this narrator again in anything he does. It's just that bad.
    Anyway, you've been warned!
    Very interesting
This story has been calling me from my wish list. After many moons I got the first. Now kicking myself for waiting. Great story here and narration is excellent.
I'm not sure why I listened to all 3 books...
...except that I was only half paying attention to them as I was doing other things.
The first one was ok (and only 3 hrs long--but not worth a credit or the money), and they just went downhill from there. There's less and less story as the books go on and no real character development of anyone except the main character, Luke.

The last thing they want any part of is some mortal interloper.
Is Reese ready for the Eldritch world? Better to ask: are they ready for her?
Book 2 of the Her Instruments trilogy, which begins with Book 1, Earthrise.

    Slow, very slow
Sorry to rain on this book but the overwhelming glowing reviews need to be tempered with another perspective. Book 2 is a bridge to setup book 3. It is two short stories: a western disguised as SF and Victorian style political maneuvering. There is plenty of room for world building but most of the time is spent on angst. The male lead gets some more character building, and lots of angst. He has to be rescued twice. The conceit of of having a male princess that everyone loves is wearing thin in this installment.
Overall the series is a nice relief from violence ridden SF but moves too slowly to keep my attention. I can imagine Andre Norton smiling at this writer in encouragement but I would like to see some depth and surprises added to the SF romance trope. The writer may mature into someone to watch.
