Members Reviews:
Warm and open story of a brilliant family
The author immediately brings the reader into the life of this brilliant but troubled family through a series of stories in mostly chronological order.
Each chapter is a vivid story of growing up in family in a California suburb. Although a certain sadness runs as an undercurrent through this book; humor, wisdom and joy run through every chapter.
The author, as a child and young woman sought her professor father's approval, but received only crumbs along with severe physical punishment. Her birth mother seemed cold and withdrawn, but she enjoyed a warm and loving relationship with her father's second wife and with her half siblings.
The shadow of her father's denial of approval permeates much of the book, until the very end.
A warm voice, beautiful choices of words, and a graceful sense of humor makes this a fine read.
Great Read
An incredible set of essay/stories, at once wise and humorous, as the authors shoves herself through the same everyday "life" wringers we all endure in one for or another. Dawn is Erma Bombeck outside the house.
A true sharing from the heart!
A wonderful sense of humor! These stories are down to earth with a refreshing clarity. Sometimes poignant, sometimes reflective and always insightful, thank you for sharing a little slice of your journey with us Dawn!
Laugh Out Loud at the Absurdity of Life
I LOVE a good story. Dawn Downey has a way of telling a story that has you nodding your head in agreement and laughing out loud at the absurdity of life. You will laugh, you might tear up a little bit, but you will always feel like you are talking to a good friend when you read Dawn's books. I can't tell you how many times, while ready Dawn's writing, I have thought, "I'm SO glad it's not just ME."
A thoughtful book for thoughtful readers.
Exquisite writing. Dawn Downeyâs humanism shines through. What a wonderful memoir this is, told with insight and humor.
I laughed, cried, questioned, and looked deeply within myself. I wanted to read this book in one sitting because I was deeply engaged. Instead I read slowly and gave myself time to pause and reflect because some of Dawnâs growing-up experiences mirror mine. Collectively, the essays evoke the pathos, joy, discovery, loss and enduring love, conveying universal experiences in a simple and touching language. âStumbling Toward the Buddha, Tripping Over my Principles on the Road to Transformationâ illuminates afresh large and small discoveries that are transferable for anyone on any spiritual path. A thoughtful book for thoughtful readers.
