    Narrator was a real turn-off
Is there anything you would change about this book?
People in 1700s did not speak with contractions the way this writer uses them. Would have been interested in more historical (if accurately researched) notes- what did they eat on board ship? He hinted at a subplot about the card-playing but didn't go anywhere with it. Did not at all explain why the old gent would show the bad guy his wife's necklace-- I thought it was a gambling debt but that piece of plot was dropped. Sex scenes were gratuitous, not needed or unfitting level of detail.
How could the performance have been better?
The guy sounds like a rural radio news reader.
Could you see Leaving Norway being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    Not without LOTS of re-writing.

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
From the critically acclaimed author of Motor City, Detroit comes alive in a powerful and thrilling novel set amid the chaos of the 1960s race riots and the serenity of baseball's opening day.
Willie Bledsoe, once an idealistic young black activist, is now a burnt-out case. After leaving a snug berth at Tuskegee Institute to join the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he has become bitterly disillusioned with the civil rights movement and its leaders. He returns home to Alabama to try to write a memoir about his time in the cultural whirlwind, but the words fail to come.
The surprise return of his Vietnam veteran brother in the spring of 1967 gives Willie a chance to drive a load of smuggled guns to the Motor City - and make enough money to jump-start his stalled dream of writing his memoir. There, at Tiger Stadium on Opening Day of the 1968 baseball season - postponed two days in deference to the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr. - Willie learns some terrifying news: the Detroit police are still investigating the last unsolved murder from the bloody, apocalyptic riot of the previous summer, and a white cop named Frank Doyle will not rest until the case is solved. And Willie is his prime suspect.
Bill Morris' rich and thrilling novel sets Doyle's hunt amid the history of one of America's most tortured and fascinating cities, as Doyle and Willie struggle with Detroit's deep racial divide, with revenge and forgiveness, and with the realization that justice is rarely attainable - and rarely just.

The past beats inside me like a second heart
If you could sum up Motor City Burning in three words, what would they be?
    Our Boomer Adolescence
Who was your favorite character and why?
Both the main characters, Bledsoe and Doyle, were favorites. However, all the characters were truly well drawn
What about Richard Smalls performance did you like?
I thought Mr. Small did a great job except for his mispronouncing Mickey Lolich's name. The name was in the story a few places and it was jarring to hear it pronounced in such an unfamiliar way - it detracted from what was a wonderful performance
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The truth that walked the path between white and black Detroit.
    Any additional comments?
I was sixteen the summer of the 67' riots. We lived in a mixed area a few miles north of Detroit. The book brought back a flood of memories about the reaction from our neighbors, both white and black to what was going on a few miles from our door steps. The book also follows the fortunes of the 1968 Tigers. That was such a big deal for those of us who were (and are) Tiger fans. It also took me back to the general opinion of our black neighbors that cheered for St. Louis because they felt the Tigers organization was racist. That was a shock to me at the time and made me understand we may have lived in the same place, but we didn't all share the same world view. The book was a thoroughly enjoyable listen. I will be looking for other Bill Morris books.

Beware - order of books wrongly numbered.
Why has the order of the books in this series been wrongly numbered? I read books 1 to 5 and thoroughly enjoyed them but books 6 and 7 are the beginning of the story when John Shakespeare was first employed as an Intelligencer by Francis Walsingham and was still unmarried. It is impossible to enjoy reading books 6 and 7 out of sequence. Please rectify this mistake for the sake of other listeners, sadly it is too late for me now.
    Disappointing and unbelievable
Found the characters overblown, the story confusing, and this writer has obviously never travelled from Stratford to Sheffield. If he had, he would realise you couldn't get there in one day on a horse. Come on! It'd take about two weeks, as Sheffield is situated in seriously rough country. Crossing Snake Pass is a hard road even in a car. Coming up the east coast would take ages. Research next time? Sheffield's a great place to visit!
    John Shakespeare
Really enjoyed listening to this book. Very well read and easy to follow and know who was who by the intonation given to the different characters!
    Worthwhile!
    Very good, except...
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this as I have enjoyed the previous Shakespeare audiobooks. Good, properly convoluted plot, danger, romance etc. This, however, was let down by bad editing/production and lost it a star from me. Most, if not all, chapters were cut short & ploughed straight into the next chapter losing important plot points, turns and cliffhangers that I've come to expect from this series. I hope future audiobooks in this series aren't marred like this.
Another great book in this series
Enjoyed this book and am working my way through the series, have just downloaded book seven and can't wait to start it!
Not worried about how accurate the books are regarding period they are set in just find then thoroughly entertaining. Isn't that the whole point of a good book?

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In Chaucer's London, betrayal, murder, and intrigue swirl around the existence of a prophetic book that foretells the deaths of England's kings.
London, 1385: Surrounded by ruthless courtiers - including his powerful uncle, John of Gaunt, and Gaunt's artful mistress, Katherine Swynford - England's young king, Richard II, is in mortal peril. Songs are heard across London - catchy verses said to originate from an ancient book that prophesies the ends of England's kings - and among the book's predictions is Richard's assassination. Only a few powerful men know that the cryptic lines derive from a "burnable book", a seditious work that threatens the stability of the realm. To find the manuscript, wily bureaucrat Geoffrey Chaucer turns to fellow poet John Gower, a professional trader in information with connections high and low.
Gower discovers that the book and incriminating evidence about its author have fallen into the unwitting hands of innocents, who will be drawn into a conspiracy that reaches from the king's court to London's slums and stews - and potentially implicates Gower's own son. As the intrigue deepens, it becomes clear that John Gower, a man with secrets of his own, may hold the key to saving the king, and England itself.
Medieval scholar Bruce Holsinger draws on his vast knowledge of the period to add colorful, authentic detail - on everything from poetry and bookbinding to court intrigues and brothels - to this highly entertaining and brilliantly constructed literary mystery that brings medieval England gloriously to life.

    Couldn't Be Better!
Would you consider the audio edition of A Burnable Book to be better than the print version?
    Yes! Simon Vance is mesmerizing.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Burnable Book?
They are numerous. I have a great many audio books in my library, but this is the first one that I'm planning to listen to a second time.
Have you listened to any of Simon Vances other performances before? How does this one compare?
Same excellent characterization as Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell series, but tighter, darker plotting.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No; I'm trying to stretch it out so it does not end.
    Any additional comments?
Go to the Amazon site for this book, and click "Look Inside." There you'll find a map and list of characters that will be most helpful.
    I wanted to like this..
Would you try another book from Bruce Holsinger and/or Simon Vance?
Definitely Simon Vance again. He is one of my favorite narrators. As for Bruce Holsinger, no. I wanted to like this book - it is just my type -historical murder mystery set in Medieval London, but I just couldn't get into it. I kept expecting it to get more interesting, but it remained boring. For me none of the characters stood out as real people, and I didn't care what happened to them.

    Publisher's Summary:
Three-time Hugo Award-winning author Allen Steele now imagines an alternate history rooted in an actual historical possibility: what if the race to space had occurred in the early days of WWII?
It's 1941, and Wernher von Braun is ordered by his Fuehrer to abandon the V2 rocket and turn German resources in a daring new direction: construction of a manned orbital spacecraft capable of attacking the U.S. Work on the rocket - called Silbervogel - begins at Peenemunde. Though it is top secret, British intelligence discovers the plan, and brings word to Franklin Roosevelt. The American President determines that there is only one logical response: the U.S. must build a spacecraft capable of intercepting Silbervogel and destroying it. Robert Goddard, inventor of the liquid-fuel rocket, agrees to head the classified project.
So begins a race against time - between two secret military programs and two brilliant scientists whose high-stakes competition will spiral into a deadly game of political intrigue and unforeseen catastrophes played to the death in the brutal skies above America.

    The race to space
If you could sum up V-S Day in three words, what would they be?
    To the moon!
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the character development and the manner in which the book is framed. The characters are retelling the story many years after the events. So as a listener you often get extra details from the main characters in a retrospective manner. This certainly helped with the character development. I loved how even the last words of the book focus on character development!
I also liked the narration by Ray Chase. I normally listen to 1.5 or 1.25x the narration speed, but on this book due to the narrator voice I listened at normal speed. So for once I got to enjoy a book with what is really the correct advertised length.
The interesting 'what if' this happened instead of nuclear development is certainly a question I enjoyed thinking about. But this question was not addressed in the book itself, it was just left for us the listeners.
Another reviewer had this to say; "The historical research is admirable and the story telling is smooth. What I missed was a focus on a personal story -- I think I would have found V-S day more engaging and meaningful if the story included a counterpoint that explored the effects of doing the work on one or more of the characters. For example, there is a brief subplot about the effect of secrecy on one researcher's relationship with his girlfriend. This could have been expanded through the story to look at different effects of war, excitement of discovery, and secrecy on this man's life. Without that sort of focus, V-S Day feels like an interesting History Channel documentary rather than an exciting story." And I have to agree with his comments. But that is not to say it wasn't enjoyable. In fact I loved it! It is just it could have been even better and longer!
What about Ray Chases performance did you like?
Ray Chase's voice is one of those voices which you either love or hate, and because I have resently finished one of his works and because I am currently listening to other titles narrated by Ray Chase, at times it is often hard to separate the characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the early 1600s, Elizabeth Báthory, the infamous Blood Countess, ruled achtice Castle in the hinterlands of Slovakia. During bizarre nightly rites, she tortured and killed the young women she had taken on as servants. Together, they are haunted by the past, as they struggle to understand its imprint upon the present. Betsy and her troubled but perceptive patient learn the truth: The curse of the House of Bathory lives still and has the power to do evil even now.
The story, brimming with palace intrigue, memorable characters intimately realized, and a wealth of evocative detail, travels back and forth between the familiar, modern world and a seventeenth-century Eastern Europe brought startlingly to life.
    Members Reviews:
Ambitious, but Failed by Poor Narration
After reading The Bloodletter's Daughter, I was interested in reading this new novel by Linda Lafferty, which also deals with characters in the age of Rudolph II. I thought the conception of this story was very ambitious. Ultimately, I think it did not create very sympathetic characters, which is very important if you expect to keep a reader's attention in a back and forth, whiplash plot scheme. The present-day plot was less interesting to me than the one taking place in the the Countess's castle. Ultimately, however, I think the effort falls short on the work of the narrator Kathleen Gati. Gati does accents well, by she doesn't breathe life into the story, failing Lafferty's prose time after time. A good narrator can take a so-so book like this and sell it too us, make us believe in its quality and value. But here, we get just the opposite: a terrible job of narration that does severe damage to the writer's work, cheapening it. How did I manage to finish the entire story, you ask? By listening to it on an advanced speed, allowing the narrator's annoying habits to be submerged in a rapid processing of words.
    Good, but......
The book started out well, but as I read further, it began to drag. By the ending I felt as though I had been transported to a " Hardy Boys " mystery. Disappointed.
    Solid Story, well researched
    Any additional comments?
Lafferty's novel was a pleasant surprise. I listened / read somewhat unsure if the plot a dual time period piece was going to be good, as my experience with such plots has not always been great. I found myself as equally engaged with both storylines, and I found both to be equally well researched. The historical plot is the story of the Countess Erzebet Bathory, an infamous female serial killer 1600's Slovakia. While not the most known story, I found it as chilling as any of the more well know stories of horrible individuals.

    Members Reviews:
    Flawed Series But Addictive Reading!
"Deadly Affairs" is author Brenda Joyce's third installment in the historical sleuth series featuring New York City debutante and bluestocking Francesca Cahill. Miss Cahill, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, is an unwilling member of New York City's social elite at the turn of the 20th century, 1902 to be exact. She lives in a Fifth Avenue mansion, with her parents and older brother, attends glittering society balls and fundraisers, and allows herself, occasionally, to be courted by the town's most eligible bachelors. However, Francesca is a marginal player, at best, in the comings and goings of Manhattan's rich and famous, to her mother's dismay. She is an intellectual, and determined to do something with her mind other than plan dinner parties. Unbeknownst to her mother, she has enrolled in Barnard College with aspirations to become a journalist. Recently, however, coinciding with newly appointed police commissioner Rick Bragg's move to New York, Francesca has taken to sleuthing....and romance. Her grades are suffering as a result.
Back in book one, "Deadly Love," when a neighbor's son was kidnapped, Fran stepped in, solved the crime, and saved the day. This is when she met and worked with the extremely handsome, charismatic Bragg for the first time. From their initial introduction, sparks began to fly, and as Francesca found herself becoming more involved with sleuthing than journalism, stronger feelings than mere physical attraction developed between the sophisticated man about town and the naive young woman. Unfortunately, there are complications in the commissioner's life which prohibit him from courting Francesca.
Although family and friends have warned her to stay out of police matters, Fran has continued her work as an amateur PI. She now accepts a new case from a woman who fears her new husband is unfaithful. While spying on the philanderer, she stumbles over the dead, mutilated body of a woman. Francesca is determined to find the murderer, who, it appears, has killed before. The same unmistakable trademark is left on all the victims - the sign of a cross carved on their throats.
As I have written in previous reviews, there are many flaws in this series, the major one being the principal character, Francesca Cahill. I don't understand how the author can take a potentially credible, likeable young woman, whom, we are told frequently, is extremely intelligent, independent, etc., and turn her into a silly, immature, indiscreet, and melodramatic personage. Whenever I think Ms.

Being able to listen to the flow of the story and remembering characters from the previous books
What did you like best about this story?
That no matter what your age letting go of your past and being able to see that others have had as rough a life if not worse than you have.
    Which scene was your favorite?
There were several scenes that I enjoyed but the end where friendship shines through the hurtful words was my favorite.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Riding a fine line between envy and hope
    Any additional comments?
Very enjoyable story of young love and belonging!!! Being able to recognize that your feelings based on your past and moving forward a step at a time. Owning up to giving and receiving forgiveness. Honor is earned not just from your name but through your actions.
    Sweet, Hopeful Story
    Any additional comments?
Narration - Julia Motyka - Really Good
So this is the Prequel to Adam and Rebecca's story. Adam finds a boy about his age (Leo) and his toddler brother in the greenhouse and ends up telling his parents and they bring them home to get them warmed up and fed. They are runaways from the orphanage and Duke lets them know they are free to stay.
Adam spends most of the book in a love/hate relationship with Leo. He doesn't want to like him, but only because he's jealous of the relationship that is developing between Leo and Duke.
The book is a lot about love, hope, caring for your neighbor, giving and community along with the plot regarding Adam's struggles to be a good man like his father and uncles. He sort of fails miserably at that in a weak moment and then spends the rest of the book trying to make up for that. If you liked the previous books in the series, you'll like this one as well.

In this combination of the novels New Frontier and Final Frontier, this is the story of alternate timelines, partial political thriller, and time travel, in which a United States President is kept from being assassinated, but there are other unintended consequences as a result.
In 1976, Ronald Reagan becomes President of the United States, declares the U.S. will plant a base on the moon by 1980 and a base on Mars by 1989. The Iranian Hostage Crisis occurs, but Reagan issues a stronger response, but as a result, Osama bin Laden rises to power earlier than he normally would have in the prime timeline.
Meanwhile, The Soviet Union decides to build a starship that will travel to the stars because they want to one-up the United States, but as is usually the case, nothing seems to go right.
In the early 1990s the U.S. and the Russians join forces, which leads the joint venture to the other side of the galaxy by means of a wormhole. When they attempt to return to Earth, they find themselves in the past, where they try to fix certain events in the past while they wait for history in general to catch up to where they launched the joint mission to begin with. Things go wrong as events do not play out as planned and numerous cases of unintended consequences result from the multiple attempts at fixing the timeline.

    You must be kidding.............
Would you try another book from Cliff Ball and/or Keith Slane?
Cliff Ball, Not without checking the reviews. Keith Slane no!
What could Cliff Ball have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Ask a real publisher..... because the one for this book FAILED!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Not sure... the material was poor and the narration seemed to be flat......
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
In the realm of what ifs, a possible good story with the right author.
    Any additional comments?
Does Audible have standards? If so then the Q/A department really missed on this one!
    Performance was horrible
Would you try another book from Cliff Ball and/or Keith Slane?
No I would not listen to another book done by Keith Slane, Im not normally picky on narration but in this case it was really bad. I might read another book by Cliff Ball
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The time travel aspect was the most interesting. The least interesting was the terrorism arc, in many places it wasn't believable.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Poor speaking voice, inability to speak in a general dialect, in many areas was almost totally monotone. I've listened to over 60 audio-books in the last couple years and this was the worst narration I've ever heard.
Promising start but let down by lack of detail
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It was a good start very interesting idea and i really like the books that explore the "what if?" situations in history but after the last 1/2 completly lacks any beliveable/ plausble detail
Would you ever listen to anything by Cliff Ball again?
    Depends on the idea/ reviews
How could the performance have been better?
In my view the performance could have been SERIOULSY better, i intialy found the readers strong American accent hard to understand but i eventualy got used to it.
