    Migrant labourers in Vaishali, NCR

Songs by the Fire: Voices of Migrant Workers

Every large Indian city is built, quite literally, on the shoulders of migratory construction workers. They arrive from distant villages in search of livelihood, carrying little more than hope and resilience. Day after day they work tirelessly- lifting bricks, mixing cement, shaping the skyline- just to make both ends meet.

But when the day’s labour ends and the chill of evening settles in, another world quietly comes alive. In small circles around a fire, they cook together, share simple meals, sometimes a drink, and most importantly, they sing. The songs they carry from their soil travel with them- folk lores, bhajans, ballads of love, and praises of their warriors and heroes.

    Music becomes their invisible home.
    A powerful bond.
A shared memory of where they come from.

These men are natural singers. They do not wait for approval from the capitalist machinery of music production. No studio, no microphone, no stage. Just raw voices, rhythm, and the warmth of companionship.

One chilling evening in 2001, I sat with a group of such labourers at a developing housing township in Delhi NCR. Around a small fire, they sang with abandon. I recorded their songs and some casual conversations-moments filled with emotion, nostalgia, and their deep longing for the distant birthplaces from which they had been uprooted, facing an uncertain future.

Those voices still echo with sincerity and dignity.
