In episode six, host Alicja Schindler met with artists Tamina Amadyar and Jeewi Lee, whose work features in the current exhibition at Meyer Riegger, Berlin, I thought, I had lost half a soul here, together with Lincoln Dexter, who worked on the curation of the show with Yoyo Hu and Laura Rametti.

They met to talk about topics related to the exhibition, which, through the distinct perspectives of twelve artists, delves into the many possible interpretations of a so-called “home”, as well as, crucially, the absence of such a sanctuary. They not only talked about Tamina’s and Jeewi’s works on show, but also about cooking, colour, traces and the advantages of floor heating.

For this episode’s talk, our podcast host Alicja Schindler met post-conceptual artist, critic and musician John Miller (b. 1954, Cleveland, Ohio) at the Berlin gallery Meyer Riegger. They met shortly before the opening of his three-part solo show at Meyer Riegger, Berlin; Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe; and Trautwein Herleth, Berlin.

Miller studied at the California Institute of the Arts with John Baldessari and Michael Asher in the late 70s. In the conversation, Miller gives not only an insight into how he manages to make art, write about it incredibly well, work as a professor and make music, but also an overview of his different series, from the brown impasto to the golden works.

For this episode’s talk, Alicja Schindler met Caroline Bachmann in her studio in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Meyer Riegger opened her solo exhibition Le Rhin for Berlin Art Week. For this new series of 24 paintings, Bachmann embarked on two journeys along the river. But actually 24 views of the Rhine are not that many, when you compare this figure with the number of pictures of Lake Geneva that Bachmann has painted to date. The artist first began painting the lake at sunrise or dawn twelve years ago. In this episode, Bachmann talks about her journey along the river, why it never gets boring to paint the same old lake and and why the area around the village where she is living today is much more important in terms of art history than she would ever have suspected.

In episode three, the painter Alma Feldhandler, born in a small town near Paris in 1996, talks to Julia Friedrich, Collection and Exhibition Director of the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Feldhandler’s melancholic and somehow nostalgic paintings are characterised by a light colourfulness and maybe remind of works by Charlotte Salomon. Her images evoke memories of the history of the department stores, hospitals and tailor shops run by Jews in Berlin during the Weimarer Republic. For her show in Berlin, Feldhandler was inspired by the photographs, paintings and artefacts from the Jewish Museum’s collection in Berlin. For this reason the painter met Julia Friedrich to talk with her about the “templates” she used from the Jewish Museum and what fascinates her so much about them.

The second episode of our podcast Listening to Art is dedicated to the work of Cologne-based artist Silke Schatz (b. 1967). For this episode, Schatz met Rita Kersting, Curator and Deputy Director of Museum Ludwig Cologne, for a walk in the village of Manheim, near the Hambach open-cast mine.

The first episode of this podcast is dedicated to the life and work of the Queer American photographer Jimmy DeSana, who was working in New York during the 70s and 80s and sadly died of an AIDS related illness in 1990 at the age of 39. For the opening of his exhibition on 3 November 2023, we hosted a panel talk in the Berlin gallery with AA Bronson, Antje Krause-Wahl and Christian Liclair, which we recorded as the first episode of this podcast. Despite his recognition in artist circles in New York during his lifetime, Jimmy DeSana’s work was long overlooked. It was only last year that the Brooklyn Museum staged his first in-depth museum show under the title Submission. DeSana was a prominent figure in different scenes – such as No wave music, club culture, performance art, the Pictures Generation and mail art – and he also became a chronicler of this Queer New York subculture in the 70s and 80s through his photographs.
