Literary Loitering - Irreverent Mockery With Cultural Anarchists

It’s the last show of 2017 and we’ve swapped our Graham for a Mick.

In other news, the winner of the Bad Sex in Fiction Award has been announced, a 12 year-old photographer causes giraffe-based flashbacks for Andrew, selfies get their own museum and Texas prisons have some rather strange policies on books …

Speaking of which, our featured books are The Dark North by Martin Dunellind (with artwork by Peter Bergting, Henrik Petterson, Jaokim Ericsson, Magnus Olsson and Lukas Thelin), and The Legion Prophecy (Book 3 of the Apollonian Case Files), by Mark A. Latham.

Oh, and we’re ending the year with a quiz about gestures around the world. How’s that for avant-garde podcasting?

Get your ballet dancers and rollercoasters ready because it’s the most wonderful time of the year, and as always the nominations for Literary Review's Bad Sex in Fiction award deliver.

After that exciting opening (pun very much intended), it’s a veritable cavalcade of oddities including Sean Penn’s unknown author, Scrabble king bans, careless reading of science fiction (which may cost lives but more research is needed), and a dead grasshopper ...

Our featured books are The Iscariot Sanction (Book 2 of The Apollonian Case Files), by Mark A. Latham and Anubis by Joanna Karpowicz.

The Word of the Year is upon us once more, which heralds the steady march to Christmas – a time for twisted firestarters and Graham’s favourite index entries. While we were all dealing with fake news though, the Victoria & Albert Museum made another strange acquisition, some Labour MPs reviewed a play, John Donne apparently liked to make smutty jokes, and we discover an amazing marble run.

We also have a quiz about the language of swing – specifically the strange things that musical instruments were called in the 1930s.

While we were trying to figure if Biloxi in Mississippi was a real or imaginary we stumbled upon an amazing correction from the New York. Also, how do you “decolonise” and English literature syllabus?

Our featured book is The Lazarus Gate (Book 1 of The Apollonian Case Files), by Mark A. Latham.

While French philosopher Vincent Cespedes claims that his statement that Tintin is a girl was nothing more than fake news, we also discover that Roald Dahl’s character Charlie Bucket was originally going to be black, and that Winnie the Pooh in A. A. Milne’s books was modelled on another teddy bear called Growler.

Consider us very confused.

Also, since a recent Google doodle celebrated the 308th Birthday of Dr. Samuel Johnson we have some witticisms from the great man and some odd words from his famous dictionary.

Our featured book is the movie novelisation of Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets by Christie Golden

We’re back for another romp through the cultured world and this time we bringing steamrollers, computer-written Game of Thrones, the moral impact of kid’s books, and some strange university courses.

It’s a mixed bag of happenings this week with unfair tax rules, books on politics by Nick Clegg, time capsules by Chuck Palahniuk, actors for Good Omens, photographs of doors, fieldwork fails, the anatomy of Pokémon and lots of swearing.

While we lament the fact that Nipples On My Knee didn’t win the Diagram Prize, Grr Martin makes some interesting announcements about books. In other news, beloved children's book and TV character (and first UK cosplayer), Mr. Benn may get an opera, Philip Pullman wants “pernicious” book discounts to stop, and Hillary Clinton writes a book about the 2016 election.

We also have a quiz about closing lines from famous novels.

Jane Austen finally arrives on the £10 note so everyone should be happy, right? Well, not quite ...

In other news, J. K. Rowling’s habit of writing on anything but paper continues, an Argentinean artist uses banned books to build the Parthenon, the Twilight Zone gets a stage adaptation and Dali’s moustache is still fine.

Our featured book is Otomo: A Global Tribute to the Mind Behind Akira.

With new ideas about what the Voynich Manuscript actually is, disarmingly obvious sanity for libraries from Sydney, and more strange words added to the Oxford English Dictionary it’s just another day at the office for us.

Oh, and we kind of have a quiz about the 2017 Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book Title of the Year, but like everything in this episode that gets derailed.

Our featured book is Warlock Holmes: The Hell-Hound of the Baskervilles by G. S. Denning.
