Fat, thin, dark, light, big nose, small eyes, thin lips, flat chest- there are tons of ways to describe a body and these terms form our body image. Most of us have the tendency to criticize our bodies. I too am guilty of this and am struggling with a poor body image even today.
Our families and society have passed on this body image to us and we are transferring it to our kids without being fully aware of it.
To add to this, kids these days are exposed to way too many images through social media and other platforms. Even though there are discussions around inclusivity and body neutrality, the perfect 10 figure is still the ideal.
Besides this, a child suffering from hair and skin issues, health problems or disability is still sniggered at. We don’t realize their struggles and have no idea what they are feeling every day.
We have to look beyond the body and so when I came across the book Hug Yourself curated by Vinitha, I instantly decided to have her on the podcast. Vinitha has written over 25 books tailored for children and young adults.
Her book Hug Yourself has Body Positivity and Empowerment Stories for Teenagers. It’s A Powerful Anthology of 16 Stories Featuring Prominent Writers Like Anuja Chandramouli, Harshikaa Udasi and Santhini Govindan among Others. In my view, Everyone needs to read this book from teenagers to adults of all ages.
In this episode we talk about-
- Vinitha’s observations on today’s teens and body image
- Her and my struggles with body image
- How have things changed from when Vinitha was young to now
- What can be done to make things better
- How we parents can help kids in building a positive body image
