Feature Presentation: The Best of 2024 in Film - It’s time for us to reveal our individual top 10 favorite films of 2024, while also sharing 20 films of 2024 that Corey saw and would vouch for. Note that there is a bit of overlap as all three of us loved Dune: Part Two, My Old Ass, and I Saw the TV Glow, while we’re confident he’d have shared our adoration for Anora as well.

Feature Presentation: Comic Book Characters and IP Cash Grabs Aren’t Bulletproof - Fall 2024 was the season of the musical. Ironically the one musical that didn’t work was based on a comic book character. Joker: Folie à Deux couldn’t strike a chord, alongside other formerly formidable franchises such as Transformers, The Lord of the Rings, and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
Meanwhile, Wicked, Moana, Mufasa, Beetlejuice, A Complete Unknown, and Smile 2 brought the goods when it came to music and money.
Mid-Credits: Survive Until Q2 2025 - The Winter/Spring box office has been bleak to say the least. Disappointment after disappointment from January through March. But this is what happens when Hollywood serves nothing but its tentpole leftovers previously scheduled for 2024, alongside a ton of counterprogramming. Can April save the season and finally kick off the year with a string of successes? Fingers crossed.

Feature Presentation: Spreading the Oscar Love - While we do agree on who we’d vote for in a majority of categories at this year’s Academy Awards (step right up for another funny acceptance speech this season, Kieran Culkin), it was always going to be largely due to our mutual passion for Dune: Part Two and The Wild Robot once the nominations were announced. At the same time we do have a near equal amount of disagreement on each of our imaginary ballots even if it’s mostly between winners and runner-ups. And as we each chose to abstain votes where we felt appropriate, there was only one pick where complete shenanigans were involved. It would make plenty of anonymous Academy voters proud!
Yet somehow the shenanigans doesn’t involve our individual or mutual bitterness with Hans Zimmer being deemed ineligible for his brilliant Dune: Part Two score, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross being snubbed for their top-tier musical craftsmanship in multiple categories for Challengers, or Marren Morris being ignored for her beautiful song, “Kiss the Sky”, from The Wild Robot, which both captures the emotions of the film during a pivotal scene while complementing the nominated score. Needless to say, Best Sound, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song turned into a long vent session despite playing fair with our votes.

Feature Presentation: What Will Doug and Murph Watch on TV in 2025? - It’s a big year for long-awaited returns and/or final seasons of some of our favorite television shows. The final episodes of Cobra Kai and the first half of Severance season 2 have not let us down, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. So much more must-see TV is still to come, including Andor, Daredevil: Born Again, Peacemaker, Stranger Things, and The White Lotus!

Feature Presentation: Most Anticipated Films of 2025 - Our co-hosts have two very different lines of thinking for the types of films they are most looking forward to this year. While Doug has gone almost all in on franchise fare such as Jurassic World Rebirth and How to Train Your Dragon, Murph’s selections are more auteur driven with upcoming films by Paul Thomas Anderson and Ari Aster.

Feature Presentation: Disney Ruled the Summer (and Year) - Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine battled it out for the crown this past summer, and this Disney duel ended up determining the winner of the 2024 box office both domestically and worldwide, along with who would get first place in our Summer Box Office Pool.

Feature Presentation: Fall Box Office Draft - Unlike this time last year, Hollywood has a robust slate of films to offer audiences. Now which are going to truly break out? Will Disney continue their return to dominance with Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King? Or will the unconventional musical of the season, Joker: Folie à Deux, crash the party?

Post-Credits: Summer Essentially Ended With Alien: Romulus - Corey had the last big film of the summer movie season as we came as close as possible to unofficially wrapping up our Summer Box Office Pool.

Feature Presentation: D23 Film and Television Recap - Whether it’s Walt Disney Animation Studios, Avatar, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Disney Live Action, or Marvel Studios, originality is no longer part of Bob Iger’s agenda as his tenure as CEO carries on. All of his various acquisitions over the years and the work of other studios, creatives, animators, etc. are currently being used to prop up Mickey’s fortunes, while the company pivots to more and more sequels based on its various IP.

Post-Credits: Reynolds & Lively - The box office is no longer solely about Deadpool & Wolverine (or Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman). It’s now Reynolds and Blake Lively’s show as It Ends With Us blows up alongside Deadpool & Lady Deadpool at the box office, giving the husband and wife a one-two punch at the box office.
