Welcome to the Give And Grow Daily podcast!
Success doesn’t just fall into your lap, you have to EARN IT!
So yesterday I shared how I climbed the corporate ladder quickly by building the habit of reading.
Now that my son was about to be born, I wanted to make sure I would be the father I never had
At that moment I made a decision that my lack of education or experience wouldn’t hold me back from being the father I always wished of being.
So I made what seemed to be the next best choice...
I left my high paying management job to start at the bottom…again.
You see by this point I was managing over 150 employees and my hope every day was for everyone to just do their job. Not for them to do extra but for them to show up and do their job. Especially my sales staff! I had created scripts for everything they had to do, I just needed them to show up and say it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that simple and every single one of them wanted to change it. I saw the power of this so thought to myself…
After being in this position I learned I could make so much money in a job where I just had to show up and follow a script, it would be so much less stressful and I could finally be present when I’m home with my family.
That led me to Carnival Cruise Lines, the culture was amazing and I met some wonderful people.
My plan was to follow their scripts and formula to the T. I even took it one step further and reached out to the top 30 salespeople in an office of over 500. I asked them “If you were starting today with everything you know now, what would you focus on?”.
I combined the scripts and the habits of the most successful people in the company and went to work. To no surprise, within 6 months I had made more money than I had made all of the previous year!
I wished that would have solved it all.
Once again my solution was flawed, all I wanted was to be the dad I never had.
During those 6 months, Lucas my firstborn was in and out of the hospital with a rash no one could explain, my wife and love of my life had a miscarriage and all these events showed me that I had become a dad who was providing financially but I wasn’t there physically or mentally.
Lucas grew so much during that time and I missed it all…
Once again with the promise I had made myself, that my lack of education or experience wouldn’t hold me back from being the father I always wished of being, I left Carnival and another shift in my life happened but more on that tomorrow…
So far in the story, this is what I had learned…
Climbing the corporate ladder wasn’t my solution to providing for my family and being present
That sacrificing today for tomorrow wasn’t something I was willing to do.
