I have a problem with saying yes and trying new things. I don’t do it nearly enough, usually because of a fear of failure and a lack of confidence in myself. But it’s also not wise to say yes to absolutely everything. So where do you draw the line?
Fiverr.com is a platform to offer micro-sized freelancing services starting at five bucks a piece. A few years ago, a new client contacted me on Fiverr about recording a custom voice over script, and it was relatively exciting because it was for ten whole dollars rather than the usual five.
Unfortunately, he messaged me as my wife and I were driving ten hours away from my studio to my parents’ house for the Christmas weekend. I explained the situation to him, sure that he was going to find someone else to record his script, but he actually said he was fine with waiting until I was back in town and could record. Great! And you know what? Saying yes led to even more with this client.
Listen for the rest of the story and how saying yes (or no) at the right times will help you!

How do you get inspired from other types of creative fields that are similar to, but not exactly the same as, your own? Devin shares some tips from his own life where he gets inspired in today’s conversation, along with a whole lot more.
This is part 2 of my conversation with Devin, and if you haven’t listened to part 1 (LLC009) then it’s best to go back and listen to that first, because we jump right into the middle of our talk on this episode.

Creativity isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. Creativity is hard, sometimes creativity is just plain uncomfortable. Sometimes it means unpleasant feedback, sometimes it means working with or meeting other people when you’d rather be home alone, or having to be vulnerable by putting your work out to be judged. There are some seriously un-fun parts to being creative at times. Is that really bad for you though?

Devin: “I shot a wedding once where the bride hated her hair so bad that she literally had scissors in her hand, was about to cut her hair before her ceremony, and I had to in there and talk this girl off a ledge because I want them to know it’s not nearly as bad as you think it is.” True story *tips beer*
Devin really delivers the goods on this interview, we talk about how you can rise above the competition by being unique, the most important principle you NEED to have in your business, and this super crazy bug problem shows up right in the middle of the interview, it’s insane to listen to.
We talked for so long that I split our interview into two parts, so part 1 is right now and part 2 will release in the next interview episode, episode 11.

What are you afraid of in your creative pursuits? Other people’s judgment? Not living up to your own standards? Of not being better now than you were six months ago, or even worse?
I know what it’s like to have fear hold me back from doing something. I was a classic awkward middle school boy, too unsure of himself to have many friends or reach out to other kids. Some of that even continues today. Nowadays, it really comes out in my work life when I hold myself back from doing even simple things like talking on the phone to someone I don’t know.

I got to know Isaac Weaver a bit through a radio conference, and just talking with him got me excited about my job and going out and making cool stuff. When I launched the podcast, I knew he’d have a well-thought-out perspective on creativity and crushing the block that stands in your way.
Isaac is a podcast host and producer on two shows by Real FM, “Real Talk” and “Weekend Ketchup“. He’s an incredibly encouraging and uplifting person to talk to, and had some great things to say about working in groups creatively to achieve goals, what it’s like to work in modern radio and the new relationship between services like Spotify and Apple Music and curated music experiences like Real FM.

You know how exciting it is to start something new? It’s a lot less exciting to keep it going once the novelty is gone. I’ve learned that the hard way by trying to do too much at once. Don't repeat my mistakes! Let's talk about what you can learn and how you can avoid it.
I met Phil Ayres about two and half years ago, and through that time working with him on projects, he’s encouraged me to work harder and more creatively, and not be satisfied with good enough. He’s thought deeply about creativity and I hope you learn as much from him in this episode as I have.
Phil Ayres is a pastor, author, website builder (before CMS was invented!), self-taught marketer, musician and song writer!
He wasn’t all of these things all at the same time, but he’s spent most of his life pursuing creative ventures professionally and personally. I’ve gotten to know him over the past several years and I knew he’d be a great interview for this show from the beginning.
Queue up the episode in your playlist and get ready to hear about creativity from one of the most thoughtful and funny people I could hope to know.
