  • 31. Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble: Co-Founder and Co-Director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry / Author / Professor
Today on Live Life in Motion, I talk with Dr. Safiya Noble. Noble's research focuses on gender, technology, and culture, and how they influence the design and use of the internet.
In this episode, the Algorithms of Oppression author reveals how Big Tech and media advertisers manipulate search results to increase their revenues and decrease our attention span — and how these changes affect our society. The truth is out there. We just might not find it in .03 seconds. She also shares how some kinds of information just don’t come through on the internet and why it’s so important for us to stay aware of the ingredients in our digital diet. We discuss how racism is expressed through supposedly neutral algorithms, and why we all need to stop implicitly trusting technology just because it uses a lot of math.

  • 28. Ethan Kross: Experimental Psychologist / Neuroscientist / Writer
Do you have a voice inside your head? For most of us, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. And we often turn to this voice for guidance, ideas and wisdom. But sometimes this voice can lead us down a rabbit hole of negative self-talk and endless rumination. So, is it possible to take back control and harness the power of this so called ‘inner chatter’? This is the question the award-winning psychologist and guest on today’s podcast, Dr. Ethan Kross set out to answer 20 years ago, when he began to study the conversations that we have with ourselves.
In his brand-new book, Chatter: The Voice In Our Head and How to Harness It, Ethan combines groundbreaking research with real life examples to illustrate how our inner voice controls our life. The language we use about ourselves, he says can be incredibly powerful. Yes, there is negative self-talk. But that same voice can also help us innovate, problem solve, fantasize, rationalize, and in many ways, help us to shape our identity. It's our inner voice that makes us unique as humans, so rather than silencing the chatter, we need to learn how to harness it.
Ethan is an experimental psychologist, neuroscientist, and writer, who specializes in emotion regulation. Ethan joins Live Life in Motion to discuss the usefulness of your inner voice and how to harness it. Ethan explains how important context is when triggering emotions, how negative emotions are just as vital as positive ones, and the ways language can shape our emotional experiences. Ethan discusses how having the ability to feel the way we want all the time could be problematic and tips on how to be in the past and the future without being sucked in the chatter.

  • 26. Dr. Dean Sherzai & Dr. Ayesha Sherzai: Co-directors of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University

Today on Live Life in Motion, I talk with Dr. Dean & Ayesha Sherzai. We dive deep into brain health. More specifically, how you can maintain and optimize your cognitive functionality and can prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Affectionately known as Team Sherzai, Ayesha & Dean are the highly credentialed co-directors of the Brain Health and Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, where they study all things brain health, with a particular focus on lifestyle interventions to prevent cognitive decline and neurodegeneration.

Because Alzheimer’s currently afflicts over 40 million people worldwide, I’m willing to bet most of you are directly or indirectly impacted by this affliction. The bad news is that there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s. And incidence is predicted to triple by 2050.

What most don’t realize, however, is that 90% of Alzheimer’s cases can be prevented.

In fact, through simple diet and lifestyle changes, the Sherzai’s have experienced remarkable success in both preventing and significantly reversing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, dementia and cognitive decline in many of their patients, adding vibrant years to their lives.
