October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. There’s an organization that is working hard to be an oasis for those who desperately need help to make a better life for themselves…And the children they may have.

Maestro Christopher Allen makes his Opera Omaha debut conducting Bellini’s The Capulets and the Montagues on October 15 & 17 at the Orpheum Theater. In a recent conversation with Mike Hogan on “Live & Local,” listeners get to know Christopher as he talks about the differences and similarities of conducting an orchestra versus an entire opera, his musical upbringing (and off-key violin solos), and the joy of making music all over world.

For young people looking for a direct way to get into high wage, high skill, high demand fields, the Career Center at Omaha Public Schools may be the answer. In fact, this week is Career Prep Week for the current students in the program. And this week culminates with a Career Fair on October 15th.

The Theodicy Jazz Collective, a liturgical jazz band, is the next guest on the Vesper Concert Series. The instrumentalists come from all over the U. S. and the vocalist, Anne Phelps, is a Hastings College grad and Nebraska native. Vesper Concerts is also bringing in the Hastings College Choir and Resound Choral Ensemble (from in-house at Presbyterian Church of the Cross) to perform Theodicy’s Canterbury Jazz Mass on Saturday night, October 9th.

The “Matthew 25 Hand Up for Housing Walk A Thon” is this Sunday, October 3rd. It benefits safe and stable housing for the vulnerable in our community. 100% of the funds raised by the Matthew 25 Hand Up for Housing Walk A Thon will go to assist families and youth, in and around Omaha, find stable and secure housing. Specifically, the funds will be equally divided between Heartland Family Service, Open Door Mission- Lydia House and Youth Emergency Services (Y.E.S.)

The Annual Art & Literary Festival Joslyn Castle features a unique and intimate theatrical adaptation of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s iconic Gothic masterpiece, Frankenstein. The two-week festival, beginning September 30th and running through October 9th, will take a new and exciting direction with in-person performances being staged outdoors on the Castle grounds with two seatings each evening at 7 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. You can even try your hand at writing a ghost story, best ones win prizes and bragging rights!

It has been a while since Kaneko Executive Director Stephan Grot has had a chat with Mike Hogan on KIOS’ “Live & Local” feature. But with flood recovery news, the celebration of Jun Kaneko getting the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center, and the Annual Soiree planned for October 22nd, it was high-time Stephan paid a virtual visit to Omaha Public Radio!

The 5th Annual Porchfest OMA is Sunday, October 3, 2021 from 2pm to 5pm. The festival will take place on 10 stages including Yates Community Center, the neighborhood market stage, six porches, a poetry porch, and an open mic porch in Omaha’s Gifford Park Neighborhood located at 33rd & California Street.
