Although powerful, fear is still just an emotion. John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Fear is caused by a perceived threat or danger which stimulates physiological and behavioral changes and should cause us to examine how we are living. When we walk outside the boundaries of what God desires for us, fear is always involved. We must learn to discern or reject fear and replace it with trust that comes from a deep relationship with God.

Our life was meant to be one of intimate and pure communion with God. No change comes to us that He has not authorized. It becomes difficult to remember and call upon the promises of God in troubled times because we are so prone to falling back to reliance on self. Jesus left us with the perfect example of how to handle anything we ever endure.

When we focus on present circumstances through a lens of self-reliance, we fall victim to fear, worry, and complaint. How do we ensure that we do not become like the Israelites as they wandered through the wilderness? God desires to hear our thoughts, but does He want complaints? When emotions and feelings turn from a search for grace and intimacy with God to displeasure, disobedience and rebellion easily follow. Sometimes complaints and rebellion are not spoken, but are proven by the way we live. If we focus on Him and live with a mindset of trust, faith, and reliance on the provision of an omnipotent Heavenly Father, we experience His power and blessings and allow God to transform us into the image He created us to become.

God knows that a perfect world would not bring us to our knees before Him. Release expectations and the stresses of attempted perfection by relying on Him to shift our idea of flawlessness to what He desires. There is beauty in imperfection. Embrace yours as it causes you to rely on Him.
