The Philistines kill Saul and Jonathan. The man who tells David about their death thinks he will be happy that the man who was trying to kill him has been killed himself. But David is devastated! He is sad for Israel, her king, and his best friend. So, he writes a funeral song for them that was put in a book in their remembrance. He wanted everyone to remember their first king as a mighty warrior who had been good for the country. He wished no pain on Saul and respected his position as king until the Lord chose to remove him.

Though Saul wanted to please God, that never appeared to be his first thought. His first thought always seemed to be for himself. He was always trying to protect, elevate, or gratify himself while also pleasing the Lord. So, God’s ways and will were an afterthought. Then when he didn’t please God, he seemed sad and full of regret. But it never changed what he did moving forward. He wanted favor from God and man while simultaneously refusing to do what it took to please them.

David hides from Saul in the land of the Philistines. The king thinks he's a deserter but he is working on Israel's behalf all the time.

David refused to fight Saul, and spared his life over and over, even though Saul was trying to kill him. So, David was on the run and let God fight for him instead of doing it himself.

When Saul returned David’s good for evil, David returned his evil for good. But when he encountered a stranger who also returned his good for evil, he couldn’t take it anymore. He intended to kill the man, but his wife intervened and saved her husband and David from themselves. David was grateful to her and to God for sending her to stop him before he did something he would regret.

Even though Saul was trying to kill David, when David had the chance to kill him, he refrained. He returned Saul’s evil for good, even though Saul was returning his good for evil. If David can be good to someone that is trying to kill him, then we can be good to those who treat us badly.
