The presence of troubles, storms and difficulty in life do not always mean you are not walking with God. Walking with God through trials is often the way He leads us to where He wants us to be.
To join God in His work in the world, we have to make adjustments to our life, habits and thinking. Often times that adjustments we make are going to look like inconveniences or impractical. But looking at the relationship Jesus had with his Father, we can see that each adjustment leads us to where God wants us to be.
We can't follow Jesus and remain where we are. We can't be filled with God and while we are full of ourselves. As we surrender to God's leading and lay down our lives we will find true life and experience God.
Faith comes alive when we hear God speak and respond in obedience. But your willingness to respond to God's word is determined by your relationship with the one calling you to "jump in." Once we do, this is where we begin to experience God's power and presence in ways we never could had we just stayed on the shore.
God desires a relationship with you and any good relationship requires communication. So how does God speak?
The key to hearing from God is to grow in relationship with Him. Communication is key to any good relationship. As God pursues a love-relationship with us, He wants to speak with us. We must believe and anticipate that God will speak to us - and how God speaks is secondary to that He does.
A relationship with God is not an "every once in a while" thing. A true love based relationship permeates our entire lives. God is inviting us into relationship with Him and if we seek Him, we will find Him.
Any time we experience God at work, we are experiencing His love for us. And His love is not dependent on our deeds, but His goodness. Unless we understand and accept God's love for us first, we can have a dysfunctional relationship with God that may lead us to think that the good we do earns His love. In truth, God is at work around us pursuing a love relationship with us.
God is always at work in the world around us. Do we see Him? Rather than trying to force something to happen for God, if we learn to discern where God is working, we can join Him in His work and experience Him along the way.

We're tempted to become weary and the world is making it harder, but Jesus-like love must be the purpose and mission of our lives. We can't let our love grow cold.
