Episode 47 - Daniel Voigt Godoy - Your're Not Your Job - Going above and beyond for yourself

Do you feel like what you're doing is not really meant for you? Would you rather be doing something else entirely but don't know where to start?

In our lives, we don't ask ourselves enough questions. Along the way, you may lose track of who you really are. You mistake your identity for your job. Deep down, however, you know you were not meant to be living like this.

Daniel has been through the journey of switching careers. He's not offering you answers, though. His goal is to help you ask yourself lots and lots of questions to get where you want to be. This helpful book is what he wishes his past self had at his disposal. Hopefully it can be useful to you on your own journey too.

Daniel Voigt Godoy is a husband, a brother, and a son. In the last 25 years, he had many jobs — developer, data scientist, teacher, writer — but he's none of them. He is an avid learner and he has a curious and restless mind.

At age 46, he was finally able to switch gears. It took him several years and lots and lots of questions to figure out what was the right path for him. Now, he's finally at peace and happy with who he is while living his life the best he can.

He is an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author. His self-published series of technical books are used as textbooks in universities in the United States and Spain, and his papers have won four consecutive awards (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) at the prestigious National Treasury Award.

E43 - What You Need and What You Don't Need To Start a Side Hustle
What You Need and What You Don’t

There are very few prerequisites to side hustling. To be successful in using this model, mostly you need:

• The right frame of mind.
• The willingness to act.
• You don’t need much money.
• You don’t need much time.
• You don’t need a business degree, or any kind of specialized education.
• You don’t need employees, assistants, or business partners.
• You don’t need experience starting a business.

Here are the objectives for each week:

Week 1: Learn to generate profitable ideas

Week 2: Select your best idea (not all ideas are created equal!)

Week 3: Prepare to share your best idea with the right group of people

Week 4: Launch--probably before you’re ready--and track your results

Week 5: Regroup and refine

Your Turn: Let’s Get to Work!

You need to determine whether the side hustling life is right for you or not.

Here’s a quick test:

• Do you like the idea of having more than one source of income?

• Are you willing to devote at least thirty minutes a day to building your hustle, for at least the next month?

E42 - How side hustles can help students like you to create extra income while gaining valuable skills

In today's episode, we'll dive into what a side hustle can teach you, the skills you'll gain, and how you can create that much-needed extra income while still focusing on your studies. Let's get started!

First off, let's talk about the valuable lessons and skills you can learn through a side hustle. One of the most significant benefits is the opportunity to develop your entrepreneurial mindset. Whether you start a small business, offer services, or engage in freelancing, you'll learn essential skills like problem-solving, communication, time management, and resilience.

Skill Development

Let's break down some of the specific skills you can gain through a side hustle as a student.

1. Communication: When running a side hustle, you'll interact with clients, customers, and other professionals, enhancing your communication and interpersonal skills.
2. Marketing: Promoting your side hustle will require you to develop marketing strategies, create compelling content, and learn about social media marketing.
3. Financial Literacy: Managing the income and expenses of your side hustle will teach you valuable lessons about budgeting, bookkeeping, and financial responsibility.
4. Time Management: Balancing your studies and a side hustle will push you to become a master of time management and productivity.
5. Networking: Building connections with clients, fellow entrepreneurs, and industry professionals will expand your network and open doors for future opportunities.

It's important to find opportunities that align with your interests, abilities, and availability. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Side Hustle Ideas for Students

1. Freelancing: Leverage your skills, such as writing, graphic design, or coding, and offer your services on freelance platforms like Upwork or Fiverr.
2. Social Media Management: If you have a knack for social media, help small businesses or individuals manage their social media accounts and develop engaging content.
3. Event Photography or Videography: If you have an eye for capturing moments, consider offering your photography or videography services for events like weddings, parties, or conferences.
4. E-commerce: Start an online store by selling handmade crafts, clothing, or digital products. Platforms like Etsy or Shopify make it easy to set up your own shop.

Balancing Your Side Hustle and Studies

Set Clear Boundaries: Establish specific times and days dedicated to your side hustle, ensuring you have enough time to focus on your studies.

1. Prioritize Your Commitments: Identify your most important academic tasks and ensure they receive the necessary attention before dedicating time to your side hustle.
2. Optimize Your Schedule: Look for pockets of time between classes or during breaks where you can work on your side hustle tasks. Use productivity techniques like time blocking to stay organized.
3. Seek Support: Communicate with your professors, friends, and family about your side hustle

E41 - How to add a side hustle to your busy life and on a tight budget

It's true that some side hustles require a significant investment, but don't worry, there are plenty of options for those with limited funds. Today, we'll focus on low-cost or no-cost side hustle ideas that can fit into your busy schedule. So, let's get started!

Identifying Your Skills and Passions

When exploring side hustle ideas, it's crucial to identify your skills and passions. What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? Start by brainstorming a list of your talents, hobbies, and interests. It could be anything from writing, graphic design, or even organizing events. Remember, your side hustle should be something you're genuinely passionate about, as it will keep you motivated during your limited free time.

Now, let's discuss some side hustle ideas that require little to no upfront investment. One option is freelancing. With platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer, you can offer your skills and services to clients worldwide. Whether it's writing, graphic design, social media management, or website development, freelancing allows you to leverage your existing talents to earn extra income.

Time Management Strategies

As a busy parent, time management becomes crucial when adding a side hustle to your already packed schedule. Here are a few strategies to help you find the time:

1. Prioritize: Identify the most important tasks and focus on those first. Make a to-do list and allocate specific time slots to your side hustle activities.
2. Time Blocking: Set dedicated time blocks for your side hustle. It could be early mornings, evenings, or weekends. Communicate with your family members, so they understand your schedule and can support you.
3. Efficiency Boosters: Look for ways to streamline tasks. Utilize automation tools, templates, and outsourcing options to save time and work more efficiently.

Let's move on to discussing side hustle ideas that require little or no upfront investment. One option is starting a blog or a YouTube channel. If you enjoy writing or creating videos, this can be a great way to share your expertise, hobbies, or experiences. Over time, you can monetize your blog or channel through advertising, sponsorships, or selling digital products.

Building a Support Network

Building a support network is crucial when juggling a side hustle and a busy family life. Look for communities of like-minded individuals, both online and offline, who can provide advice, support, and encouragement. Join relevant Facebook groups, attend local meetups, or connect with fellow side hustlers on social media. Remember, you're not alone in this journey, and surrounding yourself with supportive people can make a significant difference.

Finally, let's discuss the importance of setting realistic goals for your side hustle. Start by setting small, achievable targets that align with your busy schedule. As you make progress and gain momentum, you can gradually increase your goals and dedicate more time to your side hustle. Remember, slow and steady wins the race!

E39 - Eight Things to Avoid When Considering A Side Hustle - Future Proof Your Idea Right From The Start

When considering a side hustle, there are certain pitfalls to avoid to ensure a positive and successful experience. Here are some things to avoid:

1. Unrealistic expectations: Avoid falling into the trap of expecting instant success or overnight riches from your side hustle. It takes time and effort to build a successful venture, so manage your expectations accordingly.
2. Lack of market research: Avoid starting a side hustle without conducting thorough market research. Understand your target audience, competition, and the demand for your product or service. Without proper research, you risk entering a saturated market or offering something that has limited appeal.
3. Overcommitting and burnout: Be cautious about taking on too many side hustles or dedicating excessive time and energy to your ventures. Consider your existing commitments and make sure you have a realistic work-life balance to avoid burnout.
4. Neglecting legal and financial considerations: Don't overlook the legal and financial aspects of your side hustle. Ensure you comply with any licensing or legal requirements and keep track of your income and expenses for tax purposes. Seek professional advice if needed.
5. Lack of passion or interest: Avoid choosing a side hustle solely based on financial potential if you have no genuine interest or passion for it. Pursuing something you enjoy will help maintain motivation and increase your chances of success.
6. Ignoring scalability and sustainability: Consider the long-term viability of your side hustle. Will it be sustainable? Is there potential for growth and scalability? Avoid investing significant time and resources into something that may not have a future beyond a temporary venture.
7. Neglecting your primary job or main responsibilities: Ensure your side hustle doesn't interfere with your primary job or other important responsibilities. Avoid compromising your main source of income or neglecting your family, health, or personal life in pursuit of your side hustle.
8. Failing to set clear goals and boundaries: Define your goals and set clear boundaries for your side hustle. Establish realistic targets, milestones, and limits on the time and effort you dedicate to it. This will help you maintain focus and prevent it from overwhelming other aspects of your life.

By being mindful of these pitfalls and avoiding them, you can set yourself up for a more successful and fulfilling side hustle experience. Remember to assess your options carefully, stay organized, and balance your commitments effectively.
