This chapter starts with one of the best known verses in the Bible: “Judge not, that you be not judged.” What did Jesus mean by this? Are we known as people who judge and condemn one another? Are we never to exercise any judgement? What about making the judgement call on who is a a dog or a swine (Matt.7:6)? It is unfortunate that over the last couple of years Christians have been divided over the whole COVID issue with one side judging and even slandering others on how they should have behaved. What a sad reflection on Christians who are supposed to live life to a higher standard of righteousness than others (See Matt.5:20). Also in this section we learn about the need to be persistent in prayer. And that we are to live by “The Golden Rule”, which fulfils all that is contained within The Law and The Prophets.

A few mini sermons from Jesus’ Sermon On The Mount! From vv.19-34, Jesus gave His disciples some mini-sermons on how they were to live. Followers of Jesus aren’t to be so focused on the possessions they have in this life, based on worry, and not based on faith in their Heavenly Father. To conclude this section, Jesus commanded His disciples not to worry, but trust in God’s Providence!

You can have the best laid out plans ever, but that is no guarantee of success. The reason is that God alone knows the future. You may “prophesy” or “confess” or “say” all the so-called “right things” and yet not see things work out the way “you planned” them to. We are really supposed to summit all our plans to the Lord who knows our future.

From Genesis to Malachi God had spoken through the prophets of the Coming One, The Anointed One, The Messiah. From Gen.3:15 Satan knew that he was cruising for a bruising. He didn’t know exactly when, where, how, or who this prophesy would be fulfilled. Ultimately Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and free those were had been in bondage their whole lives, through fear of death. Jesus accomplished this in His death and resurrection, but the fact is that the moment that baby was conceived (perhaps around December) as far as prophesy is concerned, it was as good as done!

In this message we cover 3 more of the ‘You have heard it said…but I say to you’ statements of Jesus from His “Sermon on The Mount” (Matthew 5:33-48). Are Christians forbidden to swear oaths, or did Jesus mean that we should be known as people of our word? Are we to retaliate “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”, or are we to “turn the other cheek”? And are we only to love those that love us, or are we to go the second mile even for those who are our enemies? What did Jesus mean by saying, “Be perfect just as your Father in Heaven is perfect?” Can we expect “perfection” in this life? Lots of this is covered in this message.

In Matthew 5 from vv.21-48, Jesus gave us 6 “You have heard that it was said…but I say unto you”, statements. In this sermon we cover the first 3 of these, concerning Murder, Adultery, and Divorce. The rabbis had touched on the basic meaning of these commands or sayings, whereas Jesus shows that God even looks to the heart and the motivations behind these sayings, as He basically expounds upon His meaning of a righteousness that is much greater than that of the Scribes and Pharisees (See Matt.5:20).

In Matt.5:17-20 Jesus spoke of how rather than coming to demolish or destroy the Law and the Prophets, He would fulfill what was expected under the Law, and to fulfill all the Messianic prophecies. However some have been teaching that since we are ‘no longer under the law but are under grace’ (Rom.6:14), that that therefore means that the law plays no further role for us as Christians. Did you know that ‘The Law of the LORD is perfect converting the soul‘? (Ps.19:7).

Did you know that Paul would not have known of the sin in his life had it not been for the law (Rom.7:7-13).

Paul actually taught Timothy that there is a proper use for the law, and a misuse of the law.
The misuse of the law leads to Legalism or Antinomianism, whereas a proper use of the law is that the law acts as our tutor to bring us or point us to Christ (Gal.3:24).

This sermon is based on Jesus’ “Sermon on The Mount”, which can be found in both Matt.5:1ff and Lk.6:17ff. There are some differences between the two accounts. To be “blessed” is to to be one of those who the Lord has blessed or whose understanding and heart God has opened to the Truth.

Bearing all this in mind, Christians can expect persecution, as we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We can’t be hiding our light but need to be distinctive as a witness to the world.

Straight after Jesus time of testing in the wilderness that we saw in Matt.4 Part 1, Jesus returned in the power of the Holy Spirit and ministered in the synagogue in Nazareth (See Luke 4). He was rejected there and went to live and minister elsewhere. He came in fact in predominantly Gentile areas of Israel, and was a Light to those in the darkness.

He called four fishermen to follow Him, and then began His ministry of healing and deliverance. It could be said that Jesus’ ministry was 3 Fold

1. Teaching
2. Preaching
3. Healing the sick and casting out demons
