In this Psalm David asks a couple of question in v.1, which he takes the rest of the Psalm to answer. Actually when David asked, “LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill?” he was referring to some of the earthly dwelling places of God, and ultimately to God’s heavenly abode. But who can dwell or abide there?

David then lists a few of the things that would be required of such a person (See vv.2-5b), and which are basic requirements for living as an Israelite under the Law of Moses as found in the Books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy. Then in the New Testament you discover that Jesus spoke of a higher standard (See Matt.5:17-20). We can’t measure up, but we do have the very righteousness of Christ that has been given to us who have believed.

David says that a person who lives as described in Ps.15:2-5b, will not be shaken (Ps.15:5c).

How many times have you come across people who say, “There is no God!” ? We have met them especially when doing street evangelism. But why do people deny the existence of God? we believe that Ps.14:1 reveals the answer. It is because they are corrupt and love their sinful lives! Of course we were all once like that, as was the whole earth in the days of Noah (See Gen.6:5, 11-12), and yet in the midst of it all we read that Noah found or obtained Grace from the LORD (Gen.6:8).

We have every reason to be glad and rejoice for the great deliverance from captivity that the LORD has brought to us (See Ps.14:7; Ps.126).

Have you ever wondered why prayers are taking so long to be answered? Ever wondered why you can’t sense the presence of the LORD? David did. He asked 4 times in Ps.13:1-2 “How long?”

But by the end of this short psalm, in vv.5-6 he ends on a brighter note: “But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because He has dealt bountifully with me.”

If David could say that under the Old Covenant, how much more should we be able to sing and rejoice in the great mercy that has been shown us (See Eph.2:4-7; Titus 3:4-7.

Look around you today and maybe like David you’ll be concerned because of a lack of godly men and women, and a scarcity of the faithful! Where have they gone? Have they disappeared? Maybe we just need to come forth and let our light shine in the midst of this darkened world. Yes we are held or kept and preserved by the power of God (See Psalm 12:7; John 10:26-30), but whilst we are still in this world, we need to share our blessed hope with others who have no hope!

In this Psalm David’s friends or close advisors appear to be giving him the advise to run, because the enemy is about to attack. But David has stated that he has put his trust in the LORD (v.1). David asked a very important question in v.3, saying, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” We see the foundations of our society and the Biblical principles upon which our societies are built, under constant attack. We need to remain confident in the LORD and His righteousness, since He is working out His purposes, which include the fact that ‘we know that all things are working together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called, according to His purpose” (Rom.8:28). This is “Part 2” of Psalms 9-10, and we pointed out that they are one Psalm in the Hebrew Bible. The first half (Psalm 9) speaks of God’s Judgements on The Nations, whereas the second half (Psalm 10) speaks of God’s Judgements in general.

The bottom line reason why wicked people do the things they do is that they don’t think or have convinced themselves that they will never be held accountable for the way they have lived. Some verses from Luke 12:16-21and Heb.4:12-13 might sober such people up.

Psalm 9 and Psalm 10 have been divided into two separate Psalms in our Bibles, whereas in the Hebrew Bible, they are both part of one Psalm. This is demonstrated by the fact that they are written in acrostic format (i.e.using each letter of the Hebrew alphabet to start each section using 22 letters, but if taken separately we would only have half of the acrostic complete).

The focus however of Psalm 9 is that in it David speaks about God’s judgements on the nations, whereas perhaps Psalm 10 is more of a generalisation. God has judged nations and some of them don’t exist anymore. However, there will also be a final Judgement Day (See Rev.20:11-15), in which all the wicked and those who conveniently forget God (See Ps.9:17), will be ‘turned into hell’.

This Psalm starts and finishes with the phrase, ‘O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!’ Therefore we know that David was thanking and praising God from start to finish. And yet, this Psalm also highlights what God’s original intent for man was. But unfortunately, as we know, man has sinned and has fallen short of the glory of God (See Rom.3:23). So in this Psalm, as we follow how it is quoted in the New Testament, we’ll see how Jesus has come to earth as the perfect man, to represent man, to rescue man, and to save man, so that God will get all the glory!

According to the superscript of this Psalm, it was a meditation of David, which he sang to the LORD because of or concerning the words of Cush, a Benjamite. We aren’t told who this was but we know that Saul was of the tribe of Benjamin, and was always hounding David. Some commentators think that the person referred to was an officer of Saul’s army who was troubling David.

Anyway, as Christians we can identify with the tactics of the enemy and pray that God will bring justice to the wicked and vindicate the righteous. He will do that ultimately on the day of judgement (See Rev.19:11-21), and also in our daily battles, we know that the LORD is fighting for us.
