Real life is hard because real life is broken. And like the wildflowers that once stirred our hearts, all the wonderful solutions that human beings come up with invariably wither and fall. Yet during the season of Advent, God speaks tender comfort to us. With his unbreakable Word, he shows us the glory of Jesus, who comes to "tend to his flock like a shepherd.” Then he urges us to prepare the rest of the Lord’s people for his coming, speaking to their troubled hearts and urging them also to “prepare the way for the Lord.”

Waiting can be really hard. Believers hear the promises of God and long for them to be revealed. It can seem like every benefit is in the future instead of the present. Yet even while we wait, God is providing for and producing in us blessings of his grace.

Today’s Focus: When you know what heaven is like, it’s hard to wait. John’s Revelation hardly scratches the surface of what we long for. It’s so different from our reality now, especially when we see Jesus’ words. Having lived a life going against the grain of this world, Jesus moves us by his gospel to live in preparation for heaven. And in this way we are truly blessed.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.” That’s the greatest commandment, Jesus says. But what does he say to those who have failed to obey it? What shall we tell one another when the image reflected back to each of us  in this commandment’s mirror is often unloving, even hateful?

Today Jesus proves that he alone is the answer. The Messiah who is both David’s son and David’s Lord, Jesus  demonstrated unfailing love for God and also for you. All Scripture hangs upon this beautiful truth! Therefore, he has the final say.
