Episode 506 - Lisa F Rosenberg - Author of Fine, I’m A Terrible Person - a funny, heart wrenching, adult mother daughter story

Lisa F. Rosenberg has a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley in Art History, a M.A. in Graduate Humanities and a MFA in Creative Writing from Dominican University of California. Her early professional career was in the blue-chip retail art world as a Gallerist for several prominent San Francisco art dealers including Crown Point Press and John Berggruen Gallery.

She was most recently a public guide at SFMOMA and Museum Educator on staff at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.

Her writing up until now has been in her professional life, primarily non-fiction, essays for exhibition catalogs, art criticism, tours, and public talks. Her short story, Family Footnotes, was recently featured in the summer 2024 edition of Amaranth: a journal of food writing, art and design, and she was a quarterfinalist in the Driftwood Press in house short story contest for the Spring of 2024.

Fine, I’m a Terrible Person is her debut novel. Her family heritage is Rhodeslis, Ladino speaking Sephardic Jews from the island of Rhodes. Her deep affection for her cultural legacy is reflected in the novel’s historical accuracy of language, cultural authenticity, and descriptions of mouthwatering cuisine.

    About the Book

    Fine, I’m a Terrible Person

73-year-old, worn out, former beauty, Aurora Hmans Feldenburg, a hapless, perpetually broke, eccentric, divorcee living in the wealthy enclave of Tiburon in Marin County in Northern California, is wakened by a phone call informing her that her father’s widow, has died. Her last chance at solvency, she decides to drive to Los Angeles to see if there is a will. Aurora is always ready for the next get rich scheme.

Aurora’s high-strung daughter, 43-year-old Leyla Feldenburg Rothstein, is a hypersensitive, insecure, perfectionist, insomniac, emotionally damaged from her father’s lifelong abuse and rejection. She is married to a wealthy, Jewish prince charming, investment banker who specializes in the legal Cannabis industry.

Aurora and Leyla’s separate quests intersect and enmesh in Los Angeles over the course of a weekend, where they both end up staying with cousins, quirky, endearing, Sephardic Jews who speak Ladino, mostly in proverbs and cook prodigious quantities of delicacies from the old country, the island of Rhodes.

When Aurora’s meager inheritance is stolen, she drags Leyla into a ludicrous chase. Unable to resist the pull from the trauma bond she shares with her infuriating mother, Leyla fails to adhere to her boundaries, even after years of therapy. She risks losing everything to another one of Aurora’s harebrained schemes.

Their entangled journeys and the chaotic, catastrophic outcome are the last straw for Leyla who must break free from her mother’s toxic dependency and destructive attachment to save herself, her marriage, and her young family.

  • E503 - Dr. Torkil Færø - The Pulse Cure - Take charge of your own health with measurable actions

EPISODE 503 - Dr. Torkil Færø - The Pulse Cure - Take charge of your own health with measurable actions

    Torkil Færø
Torkil has written the book Pulskuren and is the driving force behind the social website pulskuren.no.
He is a general practitioner, emergency doctor, documentary filmmaker, author, photographer, and globetrotter.

As a medical student, he was the first to go abroad for Norwegian Doctors Without Borders when he worked in war-torn Angola in 1996. For 25 years, he has been a freelance doctor, working in municipalities all over the country, conducting tens of thousands of consultations, and gaining a unique perspective on the diseases that plague us. He has learned that the cause is most often found in a lifestyle that stresses our body. He wanted to do something about that.

Torkil is concerned with how we can get the most out of life. In the book The Pulse Cure, he explains step by step how we can use the heart rate monitor or the smartphone to get to know our own body better and gain better control of the stress balance and the autonomic nervous system.

Torkil has been given a new life by making several intelligent lifestyle changes. He hopes that everyone who wants better health and more energy to live life to the fullest will benefit from the measures he enjoys so much. He also has a big wish for the healthcare system: that it works preventively to a much greater extent and provides more self-help resources than is the case today.

Torkil Færø is also an award-winning photographer who has published photography art books, held exhibitions and held photography workshops in many countries. He is an enthusiastic long-distance walker and has made the NRK films about pilgrimages to Nidaros and Santiago de Compostela. In his previous book, THE CAMERA CURE, he combined medical and photographic knowledge into a unique book about therapeutic photography, combining coping with life with taking good pictures. Faroe has travelled by backpack, bicycle, motorbike, kayak, boat and car in over 80 countries and speaks eight languages

  • E501 - Doralyn Moore - From Social Services to Writer, Finding Faith in Stories and Belief

EPISODE 501 - Doralyn Moore - From Social Services to Writer, Finding Faith in Stories and Belief

Reading is a pleasure for me and there is seldom a time that I do not carry a book in my hand. I have even been known to take one to a major league baseball game, which put a big frown on my husband’s face.

One day as I was reading a book, I thought to myself, “I can do this. I can write a book.” Little did I know then how challenging it is to write a novel. But the thought put a seed in my mind and soon after that, I began writing. However, life got in the way and I put the writing aside for many years. When I retired in 2019, I pulled out the old manuscripts and began revising them.

In March 2021, I self-published “Seventy Times Seven” with Friesen Press. In 2022, “Hope Doesn’t Disappoint”, the first book of the 3-book Victory Series was published traditionally by Elk Lake Publishing, Inc., a small Christian company in Plymouth, MA. The second book in the series, “Abundance of Grace” came out in June 2023. The third, “Caused to Triumph”, is to be published sometime in 2024.

During the over thirty years I worked in the social services field, I met people of diverse cultures, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, and beliefs. Their personalities and stories have become a melting pot in my brain and from that concoction come the characters and plots for my books. They do not come from one specific person but from a melding of many.

  • E500 - Dominick Domasky - A.I. and Authors, Publishing A Book in 2025, Celebrating A Milestone

    EPISODE 500 - Dominick Domasky - A.I. and Authors, Publishing A Book in 2025, Celebrating A Milestone

    AI's Role in Content Creation
David and Dominick discussed the role of AI in content creation, particularly in writing and podcasting. They expressed concerns about the reliance on AI tools, which they believe can lead to the production of "beige" content that lacks personal stories and deep connections. They emphasized the importance of human creativity and the value of personal experiences in writing. They also discussed the potential pitfalls of using AI to generate content, such as the lack of authenticity and the inability to capture the essence of a personal story. They concluded that while AI can be a useful tool, it should not replace the creative mind of an author.

    Consistency, Authenticity, and Networking Success
Dominick emphasized the importance of consistency and authenticity in achieving success, using the example of a friend who appeared on Oprah. He stressed that success requires putting in the same effort that led to success elsewhere and being consistent in sharing one's message. He also highlighted the importance of networking and reaching out to the right audience, using the example of a fantasy book author who found more success at a comic-con than at a book event. David agreed with these points, noting that the author's ability to connect with people at the comic-con was key to their success.

    Persistence and Continuous Improvement
Dominick and David discussed the importance of persistence and continuous improvement in their respective endeavors. Dominick shared his experiences with various events and how he learned from them, emphasizing the value of networking and adapting to different situations. David then shared a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, "Do what you can with what you have where you are," and how it relates to authors. They both agreed on the importance of sharing one's journey, both the successes and struggles, to inspire and connect with others. David expressed his appreciation for Dominick's willingness to share his experiences and journey, which he believes helps others feel more comfortable in their own struggles.

    Support, Motivation, and Podcast Growth
In the meeting, David and Dominick discussed the importance of reaching out to others for support and motivation. David expressed his gratitude towards Dominick for his consistent support and guidance. They also discussed the upcoming 500th episode of their podcast and the need for more authors to be featured. David encouraged Dominick to send him new authors who have never been on a podcast for a great first experience. They also touched on the topic of sharing content and the benefits of evergreen content. The conversation ended with both parties wishing each other a happy holiday season.
