Book Bio
Cynthia Newberry Martin’s (she/her/hers) first novel, Tidal Flats, won the Gold Medal in Literary Fiction at the 2020 Independent Publisher Book Awards and the 14th Annual National Indie Excellence Award for Fiction. Her website features the How We Spend Our Days series, over a decade of essays by writers on their lives. She grew up in Atlanta and now lives in Columbus, Georgia, with her husband, and in Provincetown, Massachusetts, in a little house by the water. Her third novel, The Art of Her Life, will be published in June of 2023.

I write novels about relationships, about how characters navigate between separateness and togetherness. About how they balance the need for both time to themselves and time together. About what compromise does to a person’s sense of self.

My early stories, essays, and reviews appeared in Hunger Mountain, Brevity, Gargoyle, Contrary Magazine, Clapboard House, Storyglossia, and Numéro Cinq. For a number of years, which I think of as my crazy years, I served as the Review Editor for Contrary Magazine AND the Writing Life Editor for Hunger Mountain AND I was in graduate school AND in a writing group.

In 2012 I graduated from Vermont College of Fine Arts with an MFA in Creative Writing. Later that year, I was awarded a residency at Ragdale, where I stayed in the Playroom and threw pages from the tower down the stairs… In 2013, because Pam Houston and Karen Nelson needed a third body, I became a founding board member of the literary nonprofit Writing by Writers. The workshops are set in gorgeous places with excellent faculty, and you will find me there selling faculty books.

You do not have to be fixed to be faithful or perfect to be perfected.

Resting on a bed swing on a large wrap-around porch with a ceiling fan and a cold glass of lemonade is a welcome reprieve on a hot summer day. This has never been Kelley Glenn's desire. It is tantamount to a movie fantasy and requires too much daydreaming in a world where she fends off physical abuse and sexual assault. Mars and Pluto are probably closer than the faraway places she hides to stay out of harm's way. Kelley escapes to these mental hideaways while the ones who are supposed to love and protect her, violate her. With a hole in her soul, she jumps out of the childhood frying pan, right into the fire when she marries a charmer.

Many wonder why abused intimate partners do not leave or report the abuse. In her memoir, What a Woman: My Story for God's Glory, Ms. Glenn invites readers to be a fly on the wall and witness what abused partners face. Kelley's journey to believe there is a realm of possibility greater than the only ones she has had since birth takes courage. There are times when she is too broken to see past the moment, or look in a mirror and see anything good. Her gaze changes direction as she looks to the one in whom she has confidence.

Jillian Abby has mastered reinvention throughout her life to create the most whole and satisfying journey. She left the comfort of her hometown of Buffalo, NY, to study abroad in Cochabamba, Bolivia, at age 15. As an adult, her resume includes Certified Public Accountant, Licensed Massage Therapist, craft beer bar owner, creative copywriter, homeschooling parent, and black belt martial artist.

Her most recent role as a newly out lesbian and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community was by far her riskiest and most rewarding change. She serves as a committee member for Tampa’s first inclusive homeschool prom (@tbhive) and is a member of Tampa’s LGBT Chamber of Commerce and Babe Crafted. Jillian lives in Tampa Bay with her partner, Jen, their wildly wacky children, Sophie and Ollie, and a rescue cat named Poe.
