    EPISODE 25  -

    About Charles Matheus

Charles Matheus is an adventurer, entrepreneur, mentor, and leadership consultant. He has led individuals and groups to the top of the highest peaks in Wyoming and to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (and back!). He uses the facilitation and coaching skills he honed in those intense, high-risk wilderness settings to support, teach, and mentor experienced and emerging leaders in business, higher education, and the nonprofit sector.

Charles is on a mission to help other men feel powerful and confident as they step away from old, unsound leadership models and toward more inclusive, flexible, and sustainable modes. Charles’s TEDx talks, keynotes, and workshops have inspired hundreds of workshop participants, and conference attendees.

Charles is a Mankind Project facilitator, men’s group coach, and acts as a consultant for several ongoing men’s empowerment, leadership, and study groups. Charles also co-hosts the “Remaking Manhood” podcast which features conversations with men and women at the forefront of the Healthy Masculinity movement.

We speak with Charles as he and his family are on the brink of a major move from Arizona to New York State  - we talk about the journey they are on, buying a home via Zoom, moving to a town they haven't even been to yet, starting life in a new setting, leadership, masculinity and being the man the world needs!

A fun conversation with an engaging guest and thought leader!

  • E24 - Paul Attaway - Novelist - How to build a fictional series

    EPISODE 24 -

Today we welcome novelist, Paul Attaway and discuss the series of fictional books that he is building and the journey he is on as an author.

What It Means To Be A Southern Storyteller

On the simplest level, I define myself as a “Southern Storyteller” because my stories are either set in the South and/or involve characters that are born in the South. But there’s more to it than that. Every part of this country possesses its’ own unique charm and beauty as well as its’ own sordidness and ugliness, the South maybe more so. I hope to write stories that depict what Southerners are like and what life is like in the South and do so with compelling characters that may at times embody the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. But I have hope and so it is my goal that readers, after finishing one of my stories, will put the book down filled with hope as well.

    Book:
    Blood in the Low Country
    About the book -
Step back in time a bit. The year is 1973, and by all appearances, Monty Atkins has a wonderful life. Along with his wife, Rose, the girl of his dreams he met in college, they are raising two boys, Eli and Walker. Humble but competitive, Monty is slowly but steadily building a profitable and well-respected law practice in beautiful Charleston, SC. His hard work, steeped in a deeply ingrained Protestant work ethic, is paying dividends in the form of a second home on Kiawah Island and membership in the exclusive Wappoo Country Club.

    Book: Eli's Redemption
    About the book -
In Eli’s Redemption, Paul Attaway writes a novel that stands on its own but also picks up where he left off, at the exciting climax of Blood in the Low Country, his debut set in Charleston, S. C. in the 1970s.

  • E22 - Jillian Abby - QueerAbby.com - Coming Out and Letting Others in Part Two

    EPISODE 22 - Part TWO

    Update: Jillian's book is out!

Perfectly Queer: Facing Big Fears, Living Hard Truths, and Loving Myself Fully Out of the Closet

This humorous, heartwarming memoir follows a wife and mother's journey of self-discovery and acceptance as she comes out as a lesbian in her late 30s.

Jill had a happy, healthy 20-year relationship with her college sweetheart, two wonderful kids, and rescue cat from the Humane Society. They lived in a nice suburban home with a white picket fence and owned a small bar that was rated one of the “Best Mom & Pop” businesses in Tampa Bay. From the outside, everything looked perfect.

This is a story for anyone who is hiding a piece of themselves and wants to know if it’s safe to be revealed. It’s for the parent who must choose between their own happiness and the stability of their family, wondering if prioritizing themselves is selfish. It’s for the person potentially facing a major life upheaval filled with unknowns in the future who is seeking reassurance that everything will work out just fine.

A two part podcast interview with Jillian Abby aka QueerAbby.com - Jill shares her story with us as she helps to humanize the struggle within the LGBTQIA2S Community for recognition, acceptance and equality.

People can contact me with questions or for bat mitzvah appearances at [email protected]. I would love if they’d sign up for my newsletter (that I’ve never sent) at QueerAbby.com.

Jill is launching her own podcast called “In the Q” in July with Dr. Treisha Peterson (Mama phD) where we discuss that messy middle transition space for the LGBTQ+ and those who love them (but maybe don’t always know how to support them).

Perfectly Queer takes the reader on Jillian Abby's poignant and painfully funny rollercoaster of self-discovery as she identifies and eventually accepts herself as a lesbian just before her 40th birthday. Living her new truth means leaving behind a life that, by societal standards, is nearly perfect.

Jill is launching her own podcast called “In the Q” in July with Dr. Treisha Peterson (Mama phD) where we discuss that messy middle transition space for the LGBTQ+ and those who love them (but maybe don’t always know how to support them).

    Jill shares on her site,...

It's hard to love and appreciate things we don't understand. Our minds seek comfort in the familiar, what it knows and is steady... whether that knowledge is good and true or not.

I've found through my own coming out process, heaps of internalized homophobia. That fear came from not knowing. Shame came from what I thought LGBTQ+ meant, instead of what it actually was. Layers of societal conditioning that told me a story of fiction, instead of fact.

But to paraphrase the brilliant Dr. Maya Angelou, "When we know better, we do better."

Enter this space with curiosity, an open mind, and an open heart.
Ask questions and let's learn more.
Together we can build bridges of understanding.

This special two part episode is meaningful for our family - our daughter let us in on her journey and it hasn't been easy.  As parents, Jen and I have grown up with a church background, we have a long-standing Christian heritage and deep beliefs engrained in our thoughts and actions.  In a world that tends to focus on what separates us (a belief, an experience, an expression of who we are) our hope is that this conversation will build a bridge.  True love erases all fear.

  • E18 - Kathy White - Unleash The Warrior Within - Anxiety and Depression

    EPISODE 18 -

In this episode we hang on tight with our thrill seeking, cliff hugging, helicopter rescued, shark swimming guest Kathy White and discuss her book tackling anxiety, depression and how hurt people, hurt people.

    Unleash The Warrior Within

Have you ever been to that place where you don’t know if you care anymore; care about life, care about living?

I was broken for years.  I didn’t know how to love myself.   I was a people pleaser and as a result , I often took on too much and caused anxiety in my life.  I gave others the responsibility of making me happy.  I had the patience of an angered wasp.  I put everyone else’s needs in front of my own and took no time for myself.

I was successful by other people’s definition of success, based on what they saw as their version of me,  but, I was empty inside I didn’t know how to change. I read books, went to counseling and seminars, but nothing seemed to help me.

I thought this was my lot in life. Depression and anxiety run in my family. I used to come home from school to find my mom on the couch sleeping for hours. I thought it was a normal part of life. I knew no different.

One day I was driving home from work and thought to myself – Is this all that life is? Wake up. Drive to work. Work. Drive Home. Make Dinner. Go to Bed. Repeat. I felt like a robot. I thought to myself that there had to be more in life than this.

I learned to put a shell around my heart and not let people close to me throughout my life. If they don’t get close to me, then I can’t get hurt. Sound familiar?  As I gradually progress through my journey of self-discovery, the shell is breaking into pieces.
