February 8              (Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany)

Text:                       Matthew 5:21-30

Title:                       What is a Disciple?  “Something Greater”

Theme:                  Jesus often gives us some impossible sounding commands. In this text Jesus invites us to imagine ourselves, not 

                              as victims of our passions or desires, but as something greater. He invites us to imagine ourselves as disciples.

 

February 1            (Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany)

Text:                     Matthew 5:13-16

Title:                     What is a Disciple?  “Even in Small Doses”

Theme:                 In this text Jesus calls his disciples “salt” and “light”. He says that the world needs both salt and light and so the 

                             world needs disciples. But both salt and light, even in small doses, make a huge difference.

Theme:                  In this text Jesus pronounces blessings on what does not seem to be very blessed conditions, but then Jesus was proclaiming the Kingdom of God and he   was not describing something we are to do but something we are to see; the world the way God sees it. 

January 25            (Third Sunday after the Epiphany)

Text:                      Matthew 5:1-12

                               reason. Jesus reminds us that if we want to really see Jesus we go where he goes and we work where he works.

January 4              (Epiphany Sunday)

Text:                      Matthew 2:1-12     

Title:                      What is a Disciple?  “Are We Making Them?”

Theme:                 The Magi came to Herod looking for Jesus. They were looking in the wrong place.  We often look in the wrong place

                             for the things of God. This sermon will question FUMC about who we are and what we do here. Our mission is to 

                            “Make Disciples” but what is a disciple and are we intentional enough about making them?
