January 4              (Epiphany Sunday)

Text:                      Matthew 2:1-12     

Title:                      What is a Disciple?  “Are We Making Them?”

Theme:                 The Magi came to Herod looking for Jesus. They were looking in the wrong place.  We often look in the wrong place

                              for the things of God. This sermon will question FUMC about who we are and what we do here. Our mission is to 

                             “Make Disciples” but what is a disciple and are we intentional enough about making them?

December 28          (First Sunday After Christmas)

Title:                      “A New Name For God”

Theme:                  Throughout the history of the world people have had many names for God. Even   the Israelites, God’s chosen 

                              people, referred to God by many names. But there is one name that changed everything. 

                              It’s the best name for God.  Immanuel!

Text:                      Luke 1:26-38

Title:                     “Would Mary Have Said ‘Yes’?”

Theme:                  Mary is rightfully named as the first disciple because she was the first to be called to work with God, to be used by

                              God, in the salvation of the world. And Mary said “Yes.”  But would Mary have said “yes” to the angel if Jesus were 

                              born today? 

 

December 14         (Third Sunday of Advent)

Text:                      John 1:6-8, 19-28

Title:                      What if Jesus Were Born Today:  “Would We Tell Anyone?”

Theme:                  As those who have seen the light of Christ coming into the world, we are called to testify to that light, to witness 

                              before the world what we have seen and heard.  If Jesus were born today would you tell anyone?

                              Before we answer that question we should ask ourselves, “Are we telling anyone now?”

 

December 7          (Second Sunday of Advent)

Theme:                 In our world today it’s important to be “politically correct”.  Those who do not adhere to our current prescription of

                             political correctness can find themselves the target of public ridicule. But how would our politically correct world

                             have dealt with John the Baptist?

Theme:                 The first time Jesus came to earth it was a great surprise. Although his coming had been prophesied for 

                             generations, it was still a shock to many. If Jesus were born today would it be any different? 

                             Would we be waiting and watching or would his coming catch us by surprise?
