TQ 008 Daughter and Doctor
In this podcast we practice the American English pronunciation for "daughter" and "doctor". I often hear students make mistakes with these words. It can be confusing! We also practice 18/80 and similar numbers.
After the dialogue I give some suggestions to the Chinese speakers. A common way to say "hello" in Chinese is to say "Have you eaten yet?" or "Where are you going?" I explain that these are not really good things to say to foreigners who don't understand that you are only saying "hello".
The dialogue
Two women friends meet in the parking lot of their apartment complex
A: Hi, Suzie! Where are you going?
B: Oh, hi! I'm on my way to see my daughter.
A: Your doctor? Are you sick? I hope not.
B: No, I'm going to visit my daughter at her college. It's her birthday. She's 18.
A: Your doctor is in college? And she's 80? I don't understand!
B: Hold on a minute! Let's start over. I'm going to see my daughter. Daughter. Daughter. Not doctor. Doctor. Doctor. And she's 18, not 80. 18/80.
A: Oh, wow, those words sure sound similar! It's also a little noisy out here on the parking lot.
B: Yeah, you're right. Well, hey, I gotta go! I'm meeting my daughter for lunch at noon.
A: OK. Have a nice time. And give my best wishes to your daughter.
B: I sure will. Bye!
