LnR 036 What the heck?
Sometimes we add "the heck" and "on earth" to questions to make them stronger. This is in spoken English only! Don't use this in your essays or exams.
I talk a lot more than usual in this podcast. I really get off topic ("to chase a rabbit") in the beginning when I talk about my mother and sister visiting China and about being an IELTS speaking examiner. Then at the end I give a rant about Donald Trump, who may or may not be the next president of the United States. I don't think he will be, but just the thought of Trump being president is terrifying.
There is no dialogue this week, just different ways to use "the heck" and "on earth" in questions.
1. What was that noise? What the heck was that noise? What on earth was that noise?
2. Where are my glasses? Where the heck are my glasses? Where on earth are my glasses?
3. When were you going to tell me that? When the heck were you going to tell me that? When on earth were you going to tell me that?
4. How did they do that? How the heck did they do that? How on earth did they do that?
5. Why would America elect Donald Trump??? Why the heck would America elect Donald Trump??? Why on earth would America elect Donald Trump???
6. What were you thinking? What the heck were you thinking? What on earth were you thinking?
7. How did he manage to pass that exam? How the heck did he manage to pass that exam? How on earth did he manage to pass that exam?
8. Why would she do such a thing? Why the heck would she do such a thing? Why on earth would she do such a thing?
