U.S. Army veteran Mark Eberle of Glassboro, NJ was invited to be a special guest on Rachael Ray with his service dog, Batman recently. He was so surprised! But when Mark arrived at the studio there were even more surprises. Rachael showered him with gifts for helping other veterans through his nonprofit Paws Healing Heroes, which is a program to rescue, train and provide service dogs to disabled veterans in need like himself. Then Rachael presented him with the $7,000 he needed to finish the Paws Healing Heroes training facility on a Williamstown farm.

It’s straight out of a Rom-Com. Two former US Army soldiers, each do a tour in Afghanistan, meet a little while after returning home, bond over their shared experiences, then get married! But where they got married was a little interesting. Robert Musso and Francis Denmark decided recently to get married on the Q train. It was all Robert’s idea, and at first Francis wasn’t too into it but after she thought it over for a few days she decided it would be memorable. So, at 5pm on a Saturday the couple hopped on the train with their officiant, 10 weddings guests, a photographer, and people to hang garland and flowers. Some straphangers were a little annoyed with all the commotion, but that’s until they found out there was going to be a wedding. One commuter even helped Francis with her hair before the ceremony started. The MTA wished the happy couple all the best in the future and even thanked them for using their service….for their service! But why the subway? Robert said, “The subway is an integral part of New York City. If it were to stop, the city would stop. The MTA is like a marriage, they both need work, but they can both take you to beautiful places.”

Always tip your waiter! Armando Markaj has been a waiter at Patsy's Pizzeria in East Harlem for the past nine years. He loves his job, but the other day a customer was a little rude to him and then refused to tip him. When the customer left, Armando noticed she had left behind an envelope – inside was a cashier’s check for about $424,000!! He brought the check to the manager and they waited a couple days to see if she would come back. When she didn’t they tracked her down and it turned out the check was proceeds from her apartment sale and was using that money to be able to buy a new home. Of course she was overwhelmed when the check was returned.

Joseph Frascino was in the right place at the right time! He and his crew had just finished filling potholes in Jersey City when he noticed a crowd gathered on the side of the street. A woman collapsed on the side of the road and immediately jumped into action. People had already called 911 and Joseph took turns with a police officer working on the woman. He knew exactly what to do because besides working for the Hudson County Road Department, the 32-year-old is also a swim instructor, certified in CPR. But this was the FIRST time he had to put those skills to use. Paramedics arrived and worked on the woman for quite some time before transferring her into an ambulance. How is she? Well, thank God she’s okay! And thank God for Joseph!

An entire airline hanger was filled with excited kids and Disney's biggest stars as the Sunshine Foundation’s annual Operation Dreamlift took off from Trenton-Mercer Airport. The Sunshine Foundation grants wishes to chronically ill, terminally ill and handicapped children, and every year they work hard, with the help of volunteers, first responders and the New Jersey State Police, to make dreams come true with an annual day trip to Disney World.

Dr. Melissa Freeman celebrated her 93rd birthday surrounded by friends, family and co-workers in NYC the other day! She’s been practicing internal medicine for 65 years, working several days a week at her own practice specializing in treating opioid addiction. And she has no plans on stopping! “I’m only doing what I am supposed to do, and that is to reach out, to help. As long as I have the opportunity to do it, I know that I must continue to do it,” she said. She went on to say that the best part of working with people is when they kick their addictions and she gets to witness them putting their lives and families back together. And when she was asked if she plans on retiring or relaxing after this 93rd birthday she said, “I have to do more.”

18-year-old Michael Wright severely fractured two vertebrae while participating in the Staten Island Polar Bear Plunge last December. Doctors feared he would never walk again, but he’s making a miraculous recovery! Michael had a less than 1% chance of ever being to walk again. But God! The Doctors said it was a miracle! And now Michael plans to walk across the stage for graduation in June!

The New York Giants announced their 3rd day draft selections from the home of Make-A-Wish New Jersey, in Monroe on Saturday! It was an exciting day filled with games, music, food, and fun. And the Giants 4th through 6th round draft selections were broadcast from the balcony of the Make-A-Wish castle.

One Make-A-Wish teen on Saturday, 14-year-old Jared, was able to meet his favorite Giants’ player: Running Back Saquon Barkley, who won Offensive Rookie of the Year! Saquon said that Jared will also get to spend an exciting weekend with the team this fall.

The celebration also included special visits from New York Giants’ Tight End Evan Engram, Offensive Tackle Nate Solder, Tackle Chad Wheeler, and Offensive Guard Will Hernandez.

Since 1983, Make-A-Wish New Jersey has created life-changing wishes for over 10,000 children in the Garden State. And Saturday was just another day helping kids with critical illnesses look past their limitations and experience love and joy.

Recently, the Success Academy Harlem North Central soccer team was the first public school team to ever compete in the Mediterranean International Cup, which is one of the most competitive and prestigious tournaments in the world. Bradley Williams coaches the team and says they really focus on exposing the young players, sometimes as early as kindergarten, to soccer culture. They didn’t win the tournament but they know what they need to do to get better.
