Wednesday night a Harewood backyard had been brimming with close to 1,000 election signs. Thursday morning, it was up to John Little to get those signs where people could see them.

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation and the Nanaimo Golf Club pair up once again on the green with their Golf for Life fundraiser. For 33 years, Golf for Life has brought golfers, community leaders, healthcare supporters and local businesses together for the greater good and some friendly competition at the Nanaimo Golf Club.

Shirley Lo only has a faint memory of the fire that destroyed Nanaimo’s final Chinatown.

“When I was seven years old, I remember seeing Chinatown burn while standing on the roadside, and that is the only memory I have of Chinatown,” Lo said.

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is working with the City of Nanaimo, and is preparing to kick off work on the Departure Bay Pump Station and Forcemain Expansion Project. The project is scheduled to take around four years to complete and will significantly affect Hammond Bay Rd, seeing the thoroughfare become unidirectional.

Mansfield Park will be bustling this weekend. The community park is playing host to a county fair, complete with music, magic shows, booths, zucchini races, kids activities and a raffle. The event is completely run by volunteers from the surrounding neighbourhood north of Townsite Rd in Nanaimo.

Families in Fanny Bay and the surrounding area now have access to 44 new licensed childcare spaces. Beachcombers Academy and Little Oysters Child Care opened the new spaces on September 10 with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Comox Valley Food Bank is asking for donations this Saturday in front of Superstore on Ryan Road. From 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., members of the food bank will be outside collecting food and cash donations.
