Dalton Rushing’s 3-run HR off Jeremiah Estrada broke a 2-2 tie as the LA Dodgers scored 5 runs in the 7th inning off the Padres’ vaunted bullpen in a huge 8-2 win at Petco Park to avoid the 3-game sweep and leave San Diego tied for 1st place in the NL West.

Freeman hit 2 home runs to lead the Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani added a solo shot, and the Pads’ offense went scoreless over the last 6 innings against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and a Dodgers’ bullpen that just got back Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates.

In a surprising move, Padres’ Manager Mike Shildt went with Estrada- who has been great against everyone else but has given up 5 home runs against the Dodgers this season- instead of Jason Adam or Adrian Morejon, who had success vs LA this season, and this series.

Pads’ Starter Nick Pivetta went 6 innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 earned runs while striking out 7 and walking 3.

Freeman- who went 2-3 with 3 RBI- also hit solo home run in the 6th inning to tie it 2-2.

Elias Diaz hit a 2-run homer off Dodgers’ Ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto to give the Padres a 2-1 lead in the 3rd.

Ramon Laureano robbed Teoscar Hernandez of a grand slam with a leaping catch over the centerfield wall, then Pivetta struck out Alex Freeland and Andy Pages back-to-back to end a high-stress 1st inning that saw him give up just 1 run on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield off the bat of Hernandez after walking Shohei Ohtani & Freddie Freeman around a Mookie Betts single to start the inning.

Nestor Cortes pitched 6 dominant innings, Xander Bogaerts ripped a 2-run double, Ramon Laureano added a 2- run single, and the San Diego Padres took sole possession of 1st place in the National League West with a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at an electrified, sold-out Petco Park in beautiful downtown San Diego.

Cortes gave up just 1 hit while striking out 3 and walking none in 6 shutout innings in his best start since coming over from the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline.

San Diego relievers Jason Adam, Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon closed it out from there, allowing only a solo home run by Alex Freeland (off Estrada in the 8th inning) in 3 innings of beautiful work.

Laureano’s bases-loaded single scored Ryan O’Hearn and Manny Machado in the 4th inning, as the Padres finally broke through after being no-hit for 3 innings by LA Starter Tyler Glasnow. Xander Bogaerts- who had walked- scored on Jake Cronenworth’s sacrifice fly that made it 3-0.

The Pads added 2 more in the 8th when Bogaerts drove in Fernando Tatis- who had walked and stolen 2nd- and Manny Machado- who was intentionally walked- to give the Padres the 5-1 lead.

The Padres are tied with the Chicago Cubs for the 3rd-best record in the NL, a game behind the Philadelphia Phillies, and 7 behind the NL & MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers.

The Pads took advantage of 2 errors to score 6 runs in the 5th inning, Manny Machado had 2 hits & 3 RBI, the late-inning bullpen was incredible again, and the Padres beat the Giants 8-4 in the series finale at a Petco Park to win the series 3-1, remain a game behind the Dodgers in the NL West race and move within a game of the Cubs in the wild card chase.

The top 4 hitters in the Padres lineup + Ramon Laureano had 2 hits or more each for San Diego, on a day when starter Dylan Cease (W, 6-11) gave up 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7 & walking 2 in 5 innings of work.

Machado went 2-4 with a 2-run double, Xander Bogaerts drove in 2 runs, Laureano had 2 hits with an RBI & a run scored, Fernando Tatis had 2 hits & scored twice, and Luis Arraez added 2 hits and a run scored.

Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, Mason Miller and Robert Suarez combined to shut the Giants out over 4 scoreless innings of relief.

The Pads just got swept by the Dodgers last weekend in LA. They are 2-8 against them this season. But none of that matters if they win the series this weekend.
