Jake Cronenworth’s RBI single snapped a 1-1 tie in the 7th inning, Freddy Fermin added a 2-run homer on the next pitch, Yu Darvish gave up just a run on 4 hits in 6 innings, and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on the road in their series opener.

The win moves the Pads into 2nd place in both their division and wild card playoff races- they are just a game behind the LA Dodgers in the National League West race, and a game behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card race.

Darvish (W, 2-3) struck out 6 and walked none before giving way to the Padres’ vaunted bullpen to nail it down from there.

Jeremiah Estrada, Mason Miller and Robert Suarez (SV, 33) each tossed a scoreless inning. Miller struck out the side in the 8th inning.

Jackson Merrill doubled in Fernando Tatis to give the Padres a 1-0 lead in the top of the 6th. Merrill went 3-4, and Gavin Sheets went 2-3.

Fernando Tatis Jr., who has been struggling for most of the season, added 2 hits and scored a run.

Rafael Devers tied it up for the Giants with a solo homer in the bottom of the 6th.

Logan Webb (L, 10-9) shut out the Padres through 5 innings and pitched well through 6 before falling apart in the 7th.

Fernando Tatis had 2 hits, a walk, 2 runs scored and an RBI, Dylan Cease had another strong start, and the San Diego Padres beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 at Petco Park to take the series 2-1 after dropping the opener 10-2 on Friday night.

Luis Arraez hit a 2-run double in the 3rd inning to get the Pads in the board. Fernando Tatis gave them a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the 5th.

Jake Cronenworth drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, and Ryan O’Hearn added a sacrifice fly.

Tatis had 2 hits, a walk, an RBI and 2 runs scored. Arraez went 2-4 with 2 RBI.

Cease cruised through 6 innings, giving up only 4 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 7 before leaving after a walk and a single gave Boston runners on 1st & 2nd with nobody out in the 7th.

Jason Adam came on and hit Matt Yoshida with a pitch, then Romy Gonzalez hit a hard ground right at shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who muffed the perfect double-play ball and allowed 2 runs to score.

Adam then gave up a single to Wilyer Abreu before regrouping to strike out Ceddanne Rafaela and Abraham Toro back-to-back before giving way to Adrian Morejon, who struck out Roman Anthony to end the inning.

The bullpen gave the Pads 3 more scoreless innings, striking out 6 while giving up just 1 walk and 1 hit. Today it was Adam, Morejon and David Morgan.
