Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are a win away from putting themselves in prime position for a fifth straight playoff appearance pending the result of the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams game. The only thing standing in their way, the NFC South division rival Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons may be without a key cog in rookie tight end Kyle Pitts, but they'd still love nothing more than to play spoilers to Sean Payton and the Saints.

The Saints defensive line, led by Cam Jordan (11.5 sacks) should look to get after Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan as they have shown a propensity to do in the past. They'll also look to get the run game going with Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram, and Taysom Hill. The Saints will hope to have their full compliment of offensive lineman this week with the hopeful returns of Ryan Ramczyk and Terron Armstead.

A New Orleans Saints win will take another top performance from Cam Jordan, Marshon Lattimore, Demario Davis, and the Saints defense as well as a grind-it-out style, resilient performance by the Saints offense. The offense may struggle to move the ball through the air, but a stout defense limiting Cordarrelle Patterson and others can help the Saints keep things in control during what should be a tightly contested divisional matchup.

The New Orleans Saints, Alvin Kamara, Taysom Hill, and the run game struggled early against the Carolina Panthers, but found a way to turn it all around in the second half. The Saints could look to use some of what they found success running this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons in an attempt to continue to revitalize the run game ahead of their potential playoff run.

P.J. William has reinvented, rejuvenated, and reignited his game and value for this upcoming season. From concern on the outside, to viability in the slot, to reliability anywhere you need him on defense. P.J. Williams has found a way to increase his skillset with a variety of tools and roles that make him an important piece to hold on to this offseason.

Five questions ahead of the New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons matchup. COuld this be Taysom Hill's final chance this season to make sure he isn't forgotten in the offseason quarterback chatter? Will Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk get back to the lineup? And can the Los Angeles Rams knock off the San Francisco 49ers paving the way for New Orleans to make a fifth-straight playoff appearance? That and more with the big questions that lie ahead of Sunday's afternoon action.

The New Orleans Saints may hold the current record for most unique starters, but that hasn't impacted them the way it has other teams with similar availability concerns. A large part of that has to do with their ability to win win several different players at various positions. Taysom Hill at quarterback, Marquez Callaway at wide receiver, and a dominating defense continue to prove that the Saints are a top competitive team in the NFL, regardless of record.

The Saints offensive line has been a legitimate cause for concern recently with all of the injuries and COVID issues. But they held up well against a very aggressive Carolina Panthers defensive pursuit. Taysom Hill navigated the blitz and other key areas well without turning the ball over and the Saints leaned on Alvin Kamara's toughness to continue to produce on the ground and through the air. Marquez Callaway almost had another break out game, but still stood out and help his team produce through the air.

As for the Saints defense,Cameron Jordan makes waves with three and a half sacks, C.J. Gardner-Johnson made his presence undeniable with pass rush and coverage success, and rookie cornerback Paulson Adebo continues to quietly play a physical and underrated high-level game. Marshon Lattimore, Demario Davis, David Onyemata, and Marcus Davenport all founds ways to impact the game as well.

The New Orleans Saints have been through so much this season that even being able to talk about them as potential playoff contenders highlights their resilience. Displaced to start the season, down a Hall of Fame quarterback in Drew Brees, several battles through the COVID complications across the NFL, relentless injury news, and so much more. The Saints have had their backs against the wall all season but the team's leaders on the field and off have never stopped punching. Head Coach Sean Payton deserves a ton of credit for the job this team has done. Now one win and just a little help away from a fifth-straight playoff appearance.

The Saints were led by their defense again, but their special teams and offensive units did exactly what they needed to do to win. No turnovers by Taysom Hill, Alvin Kamra, and the Saints offense. Blake Gillikin, JT Gray, and the special teams unit flipped the field with great results. And the defense kept in pursuit of Sam Darnold and the Carolina Panthers, completely shutting them down in the second half, sacking Darnold 7 times, and generating two key takeaways including another game-sealing interception by C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Defensive end Cam Jordan is more than an edge rusher. As an edge defender and unflappable leader, he's been the tone-setter for the New Orleans Saints defense for over a decade and instead of slowing down, he's picking up. With 7.5 sacks over the last three games, Jordan surpasses 10 sacks for the sixth time in his career and has turned his Hall of Fame resume into one that no longer questions his claim to Canton, but turns it into a matter of when, not if.

While the New Orleans Saints are getting healthier, key pieces on offense like Erik McCoy and defense like Marcus Williams are expected to be out. The Saints will need to rely on Taysom Hill as a weapon and force the Carolina Panthers to account for him early and often in the run game, opening it up for Alvin Kamara and Deonte Harris (if he returns in time). The New Orleans Saints, even without McCoy have the weapons they need to produce on offense as a higher rate than they have so far this season.

Defensively the Saints match up well with what Carolina will want to do with Sam Darnold under center. But can they compound the pass rush and generate more takeaways in the passing game in order to buy extra possession for their offense? With Marcus Williams out, one players could change the course of the game. PJ Williams is no stranger to the Saints' free safety position, but Dennis Allen may still look to make some adjustments with Marcus out and PJ in. Those adjustments could be a difference making element of this game.

Doug Mouton of WWL-TV joins to talk Erik McCoy, Taysom Hill, and Brother Martin alum Will Clapp who could see an expanded and important role this week against the Panthers. Doug also discusses the confidence in the New Orleans Saints despite their shaky home record this season and why Saints fans can be optimistic going into Sunday's game.

The New Orleans Saints are starting to get some key pieces back from the COVID/Reserve list. Demario Davis, Kwon Alexander, Taysom Hill, and others are all set to make their return this weekend after missing the Monday night action against the Miami Dolphins.

Unfortunately, more names can continue being added to the list as the others return. Safety Marcus Williams has been added on Wednesday and may no longer be available to go on Thursday depending on the NFL's evolving policies and protocols. What the Saints do without Williams if he can't go could be key as Sam Darnold makes his full return to the Panthers offense.

The Carolina Panthers come to the Big Easy on Sunday and it's a must win for the New Orleans Saints if they want to keep their NFL Playoff hopes alive. Pass rush and ball control will be key to a victory as the Saints look to win out as the NFL season draws to a close.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton spoke with media on Wednesday afternoon to discuss their plans in preparing for the Carolina Panthers in Week 17. While Malcolm Jenkins and Juwan Johnson have been activated from the COVID/reserve list, the Saints are still awaiting key players who are expected to start returning in the coming days. Though there's no definite timeline on all 22 players, there are key contributors expected to be available for Sunday's matchup with the Panthers.

Marcus Davenport and Cam Jordan have led the arrival of the Saints pass rush over the last few weeks. Key pressures, sacks, and takeaways have been the result. Why the Saints pass rush is spiking at the right time, and what it means as they look to close out the season with wins and a shot at the playoffs.

Monday night's loss to the Miami Dolphins was a tough one. But many circumstances, such as the absences for Malcolm Jenkins, Demario Davis, and Kwon Alexander, and the need to start their fourth-string rookie QB, are not expected to be permanent ones.

John Madden shaped multiple generations of football fans and will continue to have an impact beyond his days. RIP John Madden.

The New Orleans Saints may have dropped their Monday night Miami Dolphins matchup, but their season still isn't over. The Saints have every intent on competing and still getting to the playoffs, and the road isn't an insurmountable one. The Saints were up against some challenging circumstances this week, most of which temporary, which leaves the door open for hope and optimism with two NFC South games left to go.

Ian Book struggled in his debut, completing only 60% of passes and throwing a pick-six. But he, just like the Saints team as a whole, had the cards stacked against him from the outset. A makeshift offensive line that featured a player that hadn't taken an NFL snap since 2017, pass-catchers that have drawn concern all season, and a run game that couldn't get going. Evaluating Book off of this game is nearly futile, but some questions should be asked about the usage of Alvin Kamara.

On a good note, rookie Pete Werner had a debut of his own as the defensive signal caller and performed remarkably well. He led the team in tackles, played really well in the run game and contributed in coverage as well. The future of the former Ohio State Buckeye is a bright one.

The New Orleans Saints may be dow 21 players going into the Monday Night matchup against the Miami Dolphins, but that won't stop them from believing they can put together a winning roster and gameplan. The Saints went so far as to sign Blake Bortles to back up young Ian Book and even call Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers to try to lure them out of retirement. The NFL is not going to move this game, so New Orleans must find a way to win under more trying circumstances.

No Taysom hill and Trevor Siemian has dominated the airwaves this week, but the Saints may have a big concern on the defensive side as well without both Demario Davis and Kwon Alexander. Can rookie Pete Werner step up into a shot-caller role? And will Zack Baun be the guy to line up beside him despite struggling in Week 2? The Saints will have most of their go-to secondary available, but ironman Malcolm Jenkins looks poised to miss the Monday Night showdown. How New Orleans plays to the strengths of what they have vs. being concerned with what they don't will decide this game.

The Saints will also be without key special teams players this week in Pro Bowler JT Gray andRB Dwayne Washington among others. Who will step up in their absence? And how working without Special Teams Coordinator Darren Rizzi impacts this game. The Carolina Panthers are losing players to their own concerns around COVID protocols, Brain Burns and Shaq Thompson highlight the list. But something to keep an eye on as the Saints and Panthers square off next weekend.

The New Orleans Saints had a lot of interest in Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book at last offseason's Senior Bowl, and even before. Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy had early indications of the Saints' interest in the talented rookie QB. He joins the show to talk about wha the team liked about him, his ability to quickly learn a playbook, and what he believes Book will bring to the NFL field.

No better person to hear from about Ian Book than Ian Book himself. Our friends at ABC 10 in Sacramento caught up with the Fight Irish alum just before the 2021 NFL Draft at his high school alma mater. Book discusses his influences, what he feels he does best on the field, and what he believes are his three best skillsets.

While the airwaves will be filled with conversation around Ian Book, there are other stories to be aware of. Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk were estimated to have missed practice on Thursday, and nine total names find their way to the COVID/Reserve list. Those names include starting safety Malcolm Jenkins, QBs. Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian, and more reserve offensive and defensive linemen. The team may need to be creative when it comes to depth and rotation on both sides of the ball.
