Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints continue to search in every possible corner for potential replacements for Sean Payton at head coach. On Monday news broke that the Saints would be interviewing special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi and former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson.

Are special teams coaches successful at head coach? There's a lengthy track record of coaches benefiting from their special teams experience. Could Darren Rizzi be the next one? Can Doug Pederson get back to the NFL and built a competitor in a potentially deteriorating NFC South?

Three more offensive Senior Bowl participants to watch as senior bowl practices get under way in Mobile on Tuesday. CB Joshua Williams of Fayetteville State, Perrion Winfrey, DT from Oklahoma, and Cincinnati cornerback Coby Bryant are among those who are set to shine on the field and could draw some interest from the New Orleans Saints.

Without a head coach in place, what we've previously decided would be a "good fit" for the Saints may no longer be so. Discussing the potential changes in prototype as evaluations get under way.

With the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers out of the NFL playoffs, the New Orleans Saints should take the time to get a look at offensive coordinators Eric Bieniemy and Mike McDaniel as possible heirs to Sean Payton's head coaching position.

Eric Bienemy has a significant connection to the Saints as a New Orleans native, but also as a wildly successful offensive coordinator. His usage of Jerrick McKinnon feels easily translatable to Alvin Kamara, but would the right quarterback be willing to come along to produce? That may be a deciding factor when it comes to Bieniemy opportunities.

Mike McDaniel may be a lesser known entity, but his name continues to heat up as a finalist for the Miami Dolphins' head coaching spot. His wide zone run scheme would be familiar to the Saints as constructed along with his west coast passing offense, Scheming successfully for both Jimmy Garappolo and Trey Lance shows his ability to adjust to different quarterbacking styles, which could prove useful as the Saints decide between Taysom Hill, Jameis Winston, or other potential QBs. All of that, plus his scheming ability with Deebo Samuel which may be translatable to Alvin Kamara or other weapons make for an exciting resume for the young OC.

North Carolina QB Sam Howell, Southern Alabama WR Jalen Tolbert, and Central Michigan OL Bernhard Rainmann will all pull focus at this week's Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL. A look at the three players that Saints fans should keep an eye out for this week.

With a familiar candidate like Dennis Allen already in the building, the New Orleans Saints request to get a look at some other hot names on the market in Brian Flores, Aaron Glenn, and Byron Leftwich. Could familiarity be the big difference as the Saints look to the fill Sean Payton's position?

With Dennis Allen and Aaron Glenn, there's a familiarity with the franchise, organization, and players as well as scheme and philosophy on the defensive side of the ball. It feels likely that both would keep Pete Carmichael on board as offensive coordinator. Small shifts within an otherwise consistent staffing and organizational direction.

With Brian Flores and Byron Leftwich, there are more elements to be considered. Especially with Flores who may walk the thin line between too unfamiliar and just unfamiliar enough. His schemes are similar to what the Saints have run on the defensive side, but doesn't offer much in terms of offensive playcalling - staff would be important around him. On the other hand, Byron Leftwich has been across the division for three seasons and knows the value of Dennis Allen's defense. Perhaps a lesser staff shake up with the latter. But what about the quarterback position for both?

Major questions to ask and answer around all candidates, with more certainly on the way.

With New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton having stepped down, the search begins for the next leader of the franchise. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has gained the respect of his team, fellow staff, and the league throughout his time in New Orleans. Because of that, he's considered the in-house favorite to land the head coach job as the heir to Payton.

Allen's institutional history and knowledge are second to none with two culture-defining stints with the tea and head coaching experience. Allen's most important skills include innovation, scheme building, and development of talent. Once the personnel of the defensive roster matched Allen's vision, he turned a historically bad unit into a top-five defense. Could he do something similar as the leader of the entire team which just suffered a down year on the offensive side? His track record as a teacher and innovator are highlighted by the massive amount of respect he's earned during his tenure.

Allen won't be the only in-house candidate for the team, however. Assistant head coach and defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen, defensive backs Kris Richard, and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael all deserve a seat at the top to make their pitch as well. Why each one of them is uniquely qualified, if not for the head coaching position, for a move up that could be necessary if Dennis Allen takes over as head coach.

The New Orleans Saints will be searching for a new head coach following Sean Payton's departure. With Dennis Allen as the in-house favorite, the Saints will still look outside the organization for coaching prospects. Without many of the other open positions around the NFL being filled, the Saints should be able to appeal to top candidates. Steady ownership, a talented defense, a fantastic scouting department all help to make up an advantageous landing spot for prospective head coaches.

Sean Payton held a 92-minute press conference to discuss his stepping away from football (for now) wherein he discussed the culture of the organization as well as the future of the team. He co-signed for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as a top candidate for his replacement and candidly discussed his experiences sharing stories, laughs and emotional moments - not to mention some King Cake as well. It's clear Payton was leaving on his terms and in good spirits, though he doesn't seem interested in being away from the game of football for too long, coaching, TV, or otherwise.

Brooke Kirchhoffer of WWL-TV discusses Payton presser, the weight of this moment for the Saints, and potential replacement both in-house and outside the facility. One of the most intriguing external candidates could be Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy. The New Orleans, LA native has led a prolific offense in Kansas City, is a Super Bowl champion and former player. A lot to like about the offensive-minded head coaching prospect.

The New Orleans Saints head coaching position is now open for the first time in over 15 years. The With Sean Payton retiring, at least for the 2022 season, the Saints should focus on casting a very wide net to fill their open position. Payton could just be taking a year off, but the Saints should work hard to maximize their future in either case and remain as competitive as possible.

Names from across the NFL that are currently getting interviews will likely turn their heads down south now that a very desirable job has opened in the Big Easy. Bria Daboll, Eric Bienemy, Mike McDaniel, and other offensive minded coaches along with the defensive minded bunch including Aaron Glenn, Vance Joseph, and Brian Flores should all be under consideration.

If the Saints choose to stay in-house, they'll have to fight off some competition with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen receiving interest from the Chicago Bears and defensive backs coach Kris Richard engaged with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens who are each looking for their next DC. But if the Saints want, they could promote Dennis Allen to head coach, move Ryan Nielsen or Kris Richard up to defensive coordinator or make Richard their new assistant head coach. Internal offensive candidates like Pete Carmichael should get some attention as well.

What Sean Payton will be remembered for in New Orleans goes beyond their success on the field. He was a cultural figurehead for the organization that changed, healed, and promoted a community approach to the culture of the New Orleans Saints. He was also a championship for progressing the NFL's most damaged practices and led the charge in changing the way the game was perceived, positions were played, and more He'll be remember for his legacy in the NFL, beyond and within New Orleans if this is truly the end for his coaching career.

The New Orleans Saints are no strangers to Sean Payton rumors. But this offseason, those rumors have taken a decisive step into reality as Jay Glazer confirmed on 105.3 The Fan that Payton is indeed weighing his options between returning to the Saints or retiring, even just for a break. What options does Sean Payton have? And how do they impact the New Orleans Saints?

How the New Orleans Saints could fight to convince Payton to stay. Aggressively pursing another star QB like Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers, working to keep his staff in tact, and ensuring the resources to retain as much of a star-studded 2021 defense as possible could all go a long way in keeping Payton in the big Easy.

What happens if the unthinkable does take place, and Sean Payton isn't the Saints coach in 2022? The Saints should move ahead and rebuild their staff with a full coaching search. They'd be a little late to the starting line with many teams with open coaching opportunities are already down to finalists, but the situation in New Orleans should be attractive enough to garner attention from candidates. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, Cardinals DC Vance Joseph, and other coaches with ties to the organization could be atop the list.

The New Orleans Saints tend to use Bill Parcell's Quarterback Commandments when it comes to drafting QBs. Ole Miss QB Matt Corral, does not meet the criteria to be an NFL Draft pick for the Saints. Will Sean Payton and New Orleans abide by their usual rubric? Or will they break the mold to invest in an athletic, accurate, and play-making passer?

The Saints should double-dip at WR in the draft, and maybe even focus on adding a third pass-catcher as well. Alabama's Jameson Williams will be watched closely all season - why ending up in New Orleans could be exactly what the Saints need if his rehab goes well. Looking at the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs divisional game should tell you everything you need to know about the importance of a dynamic, play-making wide receiver.

The second 7-round mock draft dives into pass catcher, defense, and invests in the next Mark Ingram at running back. Looking for a tandem back with Alvin Kamara for the future? Alabama's Brian Robinson might be the best option in this year's NFL Draft.

Lots of rumors continues to swirl around the New Orleans Saints and Sean Payton. Payton, who has several years left on his contract as the Saints' head coach is rumored to be potentially mulling a mini-retirement. Why these reports are extraneous until they aren't any longer.

If Sean Payton did end up leaving, what would happen next for the New Orleans Saints? Two excellent coaching candidates to consider in defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Why both would be solid options and how a potential ripple effect could get started if Payton were to depart.

An early look at Mock Draft Monday: going wide receiver in this draft is very important for the future of the New Orleans Saints offense. Why Alabama's Jameson Williams, despite his injury, could be exactly what the New Orleans Saints need.

Should the New Orleans Saints lose defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to one of the NFL's open head coaching positions, they have two excellent in-house options to take over the role. Ryan Nielsen and Kris Richard both have what it takes to carry on the success of Allen's defense and add their own spin and fire to the position. If the Saints choose to go out of the facility to fill the spot, they could look to an old friend of head coach Sean Payton's in former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.

Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill both exceeded expectations in 2021, but one finite detail can be missed about Winston's passing distribution that speak positively of his decision-making, which was previously in question. How targeting players at all positions impacts our read on Winston's development.

Along with Dennis Allen, Jeff Ireland has also drawn interest from the Chicago Bears. With the New York Giants having hired their GM in Joe Shoen, the pool for Chicago thins with one less top candidate. How this impact New Orleans. Meanwhile, across the division, the Carolina Panthers have hired Ben McAdoo to fill their offensive coordinator position and confidence in Charlotte is not high. Saints add WRs Jalen McCleskey and Kirk Merritt ahead of free agency.
