Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints have plenty of holes to fill on the offensive side. Will Jameis Winston be back? If not, quarterback would be a sensible pick at 18. Will the Saints be able to land a viable WR2 in free agency? Even if they can, the team should still look at which wideouts are available in the first. Interior OL, Interior DL, and OT could all be possible selections at all. But cornerback should be a position the Saints wait on.

Three players to watch at this week's NFL Combine. Christian Watson, Tariq Woolen, and Jermaine Johnson are all set to light up the combine in Indianapolis.

The Saints are set to hire former Alabama Crimson Tide football director of sports science. Presumably, he'd take over the Saints vacant strength and conditioning coach. if that's the case, then the team has found the final puzzle piece to the coaching staff.

The New Orleans Saints denied the Miami Dolphins request to speak with Sean Payton despite his not being with the team any longer. The factors that could have led to this include compensation and Payton's personal interest in coaching in 2022 with FOX calling for TV gigs.

The Saints restructured three contracts on a Saturday and cut nearly $34 million from their cap overage. Michael Thomas, Andrus Peat, and Ryan Ramczyk all see an advance on their checks, helping the Saints alleviate their spending this year. This also means the Saints expect to see Thomas and Peat back in 2022 and potentially even 2023.

With the Saints now only $42.2 million over the cap, there are several simple restructures they could do to contracts like Marshon Lattimore, Taysom Hill, Demario Davis, and Alvin Kamara. Plus, what should be done with Bradley Roby's deal?

The New Orleans Saints will turn every stone in the quarterback market to find their next franchise signal caller. While Jameis Winston makes a ton of sense for the team's focus on continuity, but if they decide to make a splash, Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson should be atop the list. Locked On Seahawks host Corbin Smith breaks down what it would take to pry Wilson away from the Seahawks, and the Saints are missing some key pieces.

If not Wilson, the Sants still have options at quarterback through the trade market. Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, and Tyler Huntley should all be looked into by the Saints and their potential trade interest.

Sean Payton looks like he's on his way to taking Troy Aikman's spot on FOX's NFL Sunday broadcasts. How it all came together, why it makes sense, and why it's the best next step for Payton.

The New Orleans Saints land Kris Richard and Ryan Nielsen as co-defensive coordinators while adding titles to more key coaching staff members. With Dennis Allen at the helm and coordinators in position, the Saints now turn their heads to the 2022 season with only a couple remaining key pieces left to settle.

Ronald Curry and Darren Rizzi get promotions while the Saints address their two biggest disappointing areas last year at offensive line and wide receiver. Barring further injury concerns, those two positions should get better under the leadership of Kodi Burns (WR coach) and Doug Marrone (OL Coach).

Next on the list for the New Orleans coaching staff is strength and condition coach. Two key pieces at Alabama are under the microscope for the Saints as the top candidates. Meanwhile, player personnel wise, the Saints need to figure out their quarterback situation and the easiest answer may be the best in Jameis Winston.

New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Williams reposted a workout photo to social media which included a countdown to NFL free agency. Is he counting his time down until he leaves the city of New Orleans? Why we should pump the brakes on any negative speculation around social media shenanigans and why it would be in the best interest of both the team and player to work out a long term deal, even if the franchise tag is deployed first.

Kris Richard has proven to be a phenomenal developmental coach since his days with the Legion of Boom in Seattle and he showed it again in his first year with the New Orleans Saints. Marshon Lattimore, Marcus Williams, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson all put up one of their best NFL seasons to date, Malcolm Jenkins continues to be a valuable leader and one of the best at his position and Paulson Adebo surprised us all with how quickly he caught on with Richard and the Saints' defense.

Meanwhile, Ryan Nielsen has helped to develop a feared Saints defensive line since the moment he joined the coaching staff in 2017 from both a pass rushing and run defense perspective. Cameron Jordan leads the way, but development in David Onyemata, Marcus Davenport, Shy Tuttle, Christian Ringo and soon Payton Turner are hard to miss when it comes to Nielsen's value on defense.

New continues to circulate around the New Orleans Saints potentially going with both Kris Richard and Ryan Nielsen as co-defensive coordinators. What would the division of labor be not just between the two of them, but with Dennis Allen calling plays as well? How the the player personnel helps to make a difference and why the Saints should go about this with extreme caution.

The Minnesota Vikings tried to get this done in 2020 and 2021 with Andre Patterson and Adam Zimmer and things didn't go to plan even with Mike Zimmer, a defensive genius, calling the plays. How the Saints could avoid this kind of production comes down to who is already in the building, the players, and the continuity and trust throughout the organization.

Should the Saints look to draft a quarterback in the first round? Why Malik Willis should be on the Saints radar at 18, but beyond that, it's all about who "the guy" could be. Outside of that, no need to rush into a quarterback in the first round. Kenny Pickett, Matt Corral, Sam Howell, Desmond Ridder and others all have their ups and downs. But any earlier than the back half of the first round feels like a reach in this year's NFL draft.

The New Orleans Saints have appointed their new wide receiver coach, Kodi Burns. Burns has helped to develop several NFL WR prospects in his short time as a collegiate coach and also has co-offensive coordinator experience. Burns could help to put an emphasis on investing more at the wide receiver position than the Saints have done in the recent past, having drafted only two wide receivers in the last five years. But if nothing else, Burns has proven to be an excellent developer and evaluator of talent.

Mock Draft Monday focuses on rebuilding the offense. Landing Ohio State University wide receiver Chris Olave at 18 sets off a fantastic draft that reloads the offense and gives David Onyemata a fantastic running mate on the interior defensive line.

The NFL Combine "bubble" is causing a lot of turmoil between the NFLPA, NFL, agents, players, etc. And it could end up costing teams with new head coaches and coaching staffs. How the NFL's newest blunder could impact Dennis Allen and the New Orleans Saints.

The New Orleans Saints are constantly getting raked across the coals because of their salary cap management approaches, but it's shocking the experts haven't figured it out yet. The Saints have the ability to shave off over $100M just with simple restructures, before getting creative. Here's why that matters.

Marcus Williams, Kwon Alexander, and the Saints interior defensive line are all important defensive areas to address to make sure there's no drop off while trying to rebuild the offense. How the Saints can address safety, linebacker, and the defensive interior this offseason either in-house, outside free agents, or the draft.

Tired: Ryan Nielsen or Kris Richard. Wired: Ryan Nielsen AND Kris Richard. Why the idea of co-defensive coordinators is concerning, but how it might work with good leadership.

The New Orleans Saints have decided to roll with Pete Carmichael at offensive coordinator. Giving him the reigns on the offense as a playcaller, developer, and installer. If Mickey Loomise, Gayle Benson, and the Saints really wanted to maintain continuity and cohesion - this was the way to do it. It also opens the door even wider for a return for QB Jameis Winston.

In order to maximize the success Pete Carmichael and Dennis Allen can have on the offensive side, the Saints will have to dedicate resources to bolstering the offense. Building Carmichael's offense won't be too challenging, but needs to be taken serious. Drafting receivers like Jameson Williams, Chris Olave, or Christian Watson are a good start. But pursuing more talent at tight end like O.J. Howard would be a massive upgrade. Attention will also have to be given to depth on the offensive line and at running back with Alvin Kamara's early season availability in question.

A look at Pete Carmichael's past success when calling plays for a talented roster. In 2011, 2012, and 2016 he had very public opportunities to call plays and put together some highly effective offenses, including a record holding one in terms of yardage output. But to replicate that success, the Saints will need to build their offense at WR and make the right choice at QB.

The New Orleans Saints have a lot of questions left to answer on the offensive side of the ball. Three positions stick out the most. Quarterback, offensive line - particularly tackle if Terron Armstead isn't re-signed - and wide receiver. If the Saints were to find a way to bring back Jameis Winston, drafting a QB might still be a good option for the team, especially if they can find good value. As for wide receiver, Jeff Ireland and the Saints scouting team should be looking to build opposite Michael Thomas this offseason.

Todd McShay' mock draft sends first-round mock raft sends Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral to the Big Easy in what would be a home run selection for the team, even though the first round might be early for quarterbacks in this draft. Positional value reigns supreme. A trade by the Pittsburgh Steelers in this draft indicates the Saints might have doubled up on QB in the offseason with Jameis Winston and Corral, which sets the Saints up for success now and in the future.

Another three-round mock draft misses the mark without addressing wide receiver in the first two days. This feels like a must for the New Orleans Saints who have struggled to bring in wide receiver talent despite valiant efforts. But landing a top offensive tackle in the first round could still be a big win. Charles Cross could be the best OT in this draft for the Saints playstyle.
