Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are one of two teams most connected to potentially trading for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. After not being charged in any of his nine criminal accusations last week and with 22 civil suits still open and to be determined, NFL teams clearly feel comfortable moving forward with Watson and his complicated history. How the fanbases perceive this move will be one piece of a very complex puzzle.

Beyond the moral pieces affixed to this decision, the Saints and other teams will have to be willing to give up quite a bit in compensation including multiple first round picks, additional draft compensation, and a quality player or two. Some names attached to the interest of the Houston Texans include Ryan Ramczyk, Cesar Ruiz, and Erik McCoy. Is that worth it?

How would the Saints make Watson, or any other tradable quarterback's salary work? Jimmy Garappolo and Watson each have massive deals and cap hits in 2022. Restructuring would be the ideal way to narrow the short-term hit. But a long-term viewpoint must be taken in this maneuvering.

The New Orleans Saints may be without Terron Armstead as NFL free agency opens next week. If that's the case, they'll be looking for creative ways to find out how to retool their offensive line. Could a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Andre Dillard or the Dallas Cowboys for La'el Collins be the answer?

Alvin Kamara's contract has been restructured, opening more salary cap space for the Saints. They are now in striking distance of being compliant with the NFL's salary limit. The previous restructures to Cameron Jordan and Tanoh Kpassagnon as well as the contracts for Jalen Dalton and Carl Granderson give a little insight into Marcus Davenport's upcoming extension negotiations.

How Deonte Harty (formerly Deonte Harris) and PJ Williams have become the most important in-house free agents behind Marcus Williams and Terron Armstead.

The New Orleans Saints see another QB-needy team drop off the list after Carson Wentz is sent to the Washington Commanders. They benefit further with no change in NFL Draft order ahead of them, and with a suitor off the board for Jameis Winston.

Saints salary cap wizardry continues as they restructure the deals of Cameron Jordan and Tanoh Kpassagnon. They also keep Jalen Dalton and Carl Granderson in the mix on the defensive line. With only two restricted free agents remaining, what's the plan with Deonte Harty and Shy Tuttle?

How the Saints can creatively work around the potential loss of Terron Armstead this offseason. With a versatile Ryan Ramczyk and James Hurst, there are several creative possibilities.

With Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers off the board, the New Orleans Saints will need to find their quarterback elsewhere. Jameis Winston is still highly regarded as the number one option, but he could end up elsewhere with other QB needy teams. So where could the Saints go from there?

Free agent free safeties that could help replace Marcus Williams if lost to another team this offseason. Marcus Maye, P.J. Williams, and Quandre Diggs top the list.

Kodi Burns has worked miracles with college receivers. Could he do the same for the Saints? Dennis Allen believes Burns will be a star in the NFL, he could start with his own reclamation project if the Saints bring back Tre'Quan Smith. A look at what Burns did with Darius Slayton in college, and how it could compare to Tre'Quan Smith if he returns in 2022.

The New Orleans Saints will have a tough time keeping two of their top free agents, safety Marcus Williams and left tackle Terron Armstead once they see the money they can get on the open market. With the Saints not expected to franchise tag Williams or Armstead, they should be free to see their opportunities as NFL free agency kicks off next week. How this process may take place, and how the Saints replace these two cornerstones if lost.

Can the Saints look to trade up in this year's NFL draft? They have the capital to get it done and have traded up every years of Jeff Ireland's tenure, with an aggressive streak even proceeding his arrival. What the Saints have not yet done with Ireland at the helm of the draft however is trade up for a wide receiver. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson both raised their stock at the NFL scouting combine, could they bring about a new approach for Ireland and New Orleans?

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers reportedly agreed on an enormous deal making Rodgers the highest-paid player in the NFL. As the veteran quarterback trade market continues to not live up to the hype, free agents like Jameis Winston and Teddy Bridgewater could see their value sore on the open market. With tight ends also flying off the shelves thanks to franchise tags to Mike Gesicki, Dalton Schultz, and David Njoku, another pool of players continues to dry up for the Saints.

More and more needs could pile up for the New Orleans Saints throughout free agency. How the Saints can attack most of their needs in the first four rounds on the NFL draft following the NFL scouting combine. Jordan Davis impressed in Indianapolis, but what if he were still on the board at 18?

If Kenny Pickett is available when the Saints are up and continuing their quarterback search, he would be a good fit. Pickett's hand size continues to bring up concerns, but the Saints could provide him a system and environment in which to thrive and erase those doubts.

Jimmy Garoppolo to the New Orleans Saints? The Saints have been connected to the 49ers signal caller. What it means, why it could make sense, and why hesitation is completely understandable. Jimmy G might be on the minds of many teams around the NFL, the Saints should be no exception, but only if their likely first choices in Jameis Winston and Teddy Bridgewater are off the table.

As the New Orleans Saints look to solve their big outstanding quarterback questions, general manager Mickey Loomis makes it clear that Jameis Winston is absolutely an option for the team, as long as the team is an option for him. Along with Winston, another name continues to creep into conversations: Teddy Bridgewater. The former New Orleans Saints could see a reunion with a team he led to a 5-0 record in 2019. Even though it doesn't look like the team is ready to turn things over to a rookie QB, it doesn't rule out investing in one for the second straight year.

Dennis Allen clarifies the responsibilities of co-defensive coordinators Kris Richard and Ryan Nielsen. Who called the final shots and how the decisions will be made will all come down to one voice: Dennis Allen's. A clear division of labor and detailed plan was necessary in order for this to be successful, the Saints feel like they've struck that balance.

Kodi Burns and Matt Rhea seem like home run hires for the New Orleans Saints, but why? Dennis Allen talked about the successful landings at wide receiver coach and the newly added director of sports science. Rhea had a remarkable impact on the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Saints feel that he can bring that same innovation to their strength, conditions, preparation, recovery, and practice processes. Meanwhile Kodi Burns is a noted developer and evaluator of talent. His ability to adjust the roles of former draft prospects could be a projection for the difference he could make for New Orleans receivers.

The New Orleans Saints should be very active in the wide receiver market this offseason and with the ample talent in free agency and the NFL draft, nothing should stand in their way of some substantial upgrades. In addition to returning Michael Thomas, the Saints could add rookies like Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Christian Watson, Jameson Williams and others. Thanks to the loaded draft and free agent classes, teams may not jump as early, leaving the Saints comfortable at 18.

Meanwhile, the quarterback market is headed in the opposite direction than many expected. Going from what was supposed to be one of the most active veteran QB markets in NFL history, to a lot of teams committing to their guys while at the Combine. What this means for the New Orleans Saints, Jameis Winston, and the rookie class bolstering names like Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett.

Offensive linemen to watch for as the Saints may need to replace Terron Armstead this offseason. Charles Cross and Evan Neal will give viewers a barometer off of which to watch realistic options like Max Mitchell and Trevor Penning. if the Saints look to upgrade on the interior depth, names like Zion Johnson's must be on the mind as well.

The New Orleans Saints are in the market for a wide receiver, and one from a common connection could be the perfect fit in Ohio State Buckeyes receiver Chris Olave. Olave told me about his meeting with the Saints and his relationship with Michael Thomas.

But is he a fit with the Saints? Looking back at 2021 and where the team struggled most at pass-catcher, it sure seems like it. If New Orleans intends to try to continue to stretch the field with Jameis Winston or another big-armed QB, Olave would be a great option opposite Michael Thomas. Returning Deonte Harty would be a huge benefit as well. With Olave comes not only a dynamic weapon, but a dynamic group.

Along with Olave, Treylon Burks, Wan'Dale Robinson, and other receivers will be on Saints fans' minds as the NFL scouting combine begins workouts. So will Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett, and other quarterbacks with the veteran market dwindling. Who to watch for in Thursday's group.

The New Orleans Saints aren't likely to bring in Mitch Trubisky as their next starting quarterback, but their being connected to him will cause some confusion. While many would see him as a disappointing addition, especially if asked to start, the truth is, the Saints are showing their diligence. How looking intro the former second-overall selection say a lot of good things about the Saints' process - as long as they don't hand him the keys.

Projected contracts for Jameis Winston, Terron Armstead, Marcus Williams, and Deonte Harty and whether or not the Saints can make them work.

Dennis Allen speaks with media later today. Here's what to expect and which questions to hopefully get answers to. Positions being watched at the Combine likely won't be detailed, but a look at how the co-defensive coordinator roles should work for Kris Richard and Ryan Nielsen would be great. Will Dennis Allen call defensive plays? What is Kodi Burns' role in revamping the WR room?
