Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

Breaking down the New Orleans Saints first unofficial depth chart released ahead of their first NFL preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

The early, unofficial poll positions give some idea of what the Saints preseason roster could look like.

Starting with the offensive skill positions, no decisions yet at quarterback, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston still yet to be named Saturday's starter. Wide receiver, running back, and right end have some interesting nuances including where Juwan Johnson is listed among the big pass-catchers.

When it comes to the trenches, there are very few surprises on the offensive line with one of the top units in the NFL. However, the interior defensive line has generated much curiosity over the offseason, and this depth chart is no exception with the placement of Shy Tuttle.

On the defense, some of the biggest questions are looming. Who will start next to Demario Davis? How soon will Kwon Alexander be healthy and can he eclipse the young talent that's stood out on Airline Drive? And of course, which corner will start next to Marshon Lattimore? A quick look at the depth chart gives you a good idea of what's expected at corner with Paulson Adebo, Brian Poole, Prince Amukamara, and Ken Crawley all as options unless another corner is added before the regular season begins.

McIntosh joins the Saints interior defensive line. More on Payton Turner and Pete Werner, who have not been ruled out of Saturday's game at this time.

Kwon Alexander made his return to the Big Easy last week and the contract numbers are a remarkable win for the New Orleans Saints. But Kwon's numbers with the team were also remarkable in 2020. A breakdown of the difference pre- and post-Kwon Alexander last year and what it could mean for the Saints in 2021.

Communication is paramount when frustration boils over. Michael Thomas and the New Orleans Saints have reportedly opened lines of contact to discuss, and hopefully bring to an end, any feud or frustration between the two parties. What the Saints avoid by not having to move on from Thomas is a crisis averted and what Thomas will be leaned on to do in New Orleans allots him more superstar potential. Moving forward together is the best option.

Maddy Hudak of SaintsWire and ESPN Radio NOLA joins to break down camp Day 12. Why Ian Book continues to be the stand out quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. The Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston battle remains close heading into the first preseason game of the weekend and the pass-catchers continue to generate positive feedback despite depletion continuing at the position.

On the defensive side, rookie Paulson Adebo continues his coming out party while Kris Richard gets the most of the defensive backs around him. Saints fans want to know when they'll get to see Kwon Alexander again, though they may not have to wait long, and the other linebackers who continue to stand out. The interior defensive line has taken on some losses of their own, but young players continue to fill the void.

New Orleans Saints cornerback Patrick Robinson announces his retirement after 11 years in the NFL. While retiring when ready is always the right thing to do, the decision leaves a larger hole at cornerback than previously anticipated. Rookie Paulson Adebo may have to step in sooner than expected, especially if Marshon Lattimore faces an early-season suspension as expected.

The Saints could also turn to the trade market with targets like C.J. Henderson and Stephon Gilmore reportedly being available. New Orleans could also look to attack the market again after roster cuts potentially free up starting-caliber players at the deadline.

Finally, a look at the notes you need after practice day 11 as Taysom Hill answers one of the biggest questions asked about him after his four games as an emergency QB. Jameis Winston couldn't pull away for a second day in a row and the Saints reveal a part of their plan for preseason snaps.

The relationship between the New Orleans Saints and wide receiver Michael Thomas may be salvageable, but right now, things look tenuous at best. The Saints have potentially lost another star player to start the season, but it looks like they're in the hunt for a starting corner in the trade market. Could 2020 first-round selection CJ Henderson be an option?

Todd Graffagnini joins to recap training camp day 10. A big day from quarterback Jameis Winston. Can Winston continue the momentum he gained in redzone drills on Monday? Or will Taysom Hill keep the gap close? Ross and Todd also discuss who they believe will get the first QB snaps in the first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Marcus Davenport is looking great in camp. He'll have to carry it through to the regular season to make a statement in a very important year. Young linebackers continue to stand out and two interceptions come from the secondary on Monday. Which young defenders continue to stand out?

As the first phase of New Orleans Saints training camp wraps up, the focus turns to game prep before the first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens!

It's time to update the Saints' 53-man roster projections based upon what we've seen at camp so far. Even though the starting quarterback spot is still open between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill, the third QB role seems to be sewn up. Devonte Freeman adds another layer to the offense as a back who can mimic some of Alvin Kamara's abilities in the pass-catching game, but with limited roster space, he'll have to impress to steal a spot. And the top two wide receiver positions without Michael Thomas and potentially Deonte Harris look to be settled, even with one wideout missing time in camp

The New Orleans Saints and head coach Sean Payton have always believed that NFL games are won in the trenches. The starting five offensive lineman in the NFL may make up one of the best units in the league, but big questions marks surround the defensive interior after the offseason departure of Sheldon Rankins and the suspension of David Onyemata.

On the defensive side, Kwon Alexander makes his return to claim his spot beside Demario Davis in the second level, but young linebackers Pete Werner and Zack Baun have stood out in camp. Meanwhile, the cornerback position may not be complete yet with Marshon Lattimore facing a potential suspension.

Who looks ready to claim a roster spot before the preseason?

Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com gave an in-depth report on the details behind Michael Thomas, the New Orleans Saints, and the offseason ankle surgery delay that led to his not being available to start the season.

Read the entire report here: https://www.nola.com/sports/jeff_duncan/article_3a4eb1ec-f785-11eb-85ea-1fb31b4bf87c.html

What it means for the Saints and Michael Thomas and what happens next.

With camp week 2 in the bag and days 8 and 9 wrapped up, we can take a look at position of need across the New Orleans Saints roster and track the performance of those competing at the most important spots.

On the offensive side the quarterbacks can't seem to fully separate, but that might be better news for Taysom Hill than Jameis Winston. How preseason games will factor into their next steps. A deeper look at the WR position and camp standouts Marquez Callaway, Jalen McCleskey, and Chris Hogan and how Adam Trautman is looking now that he's finding his rhythm.

As for the defense, the line might be the best performing unit of Saints camp. Even though the offensive line has looked just as good, there's been no denying the pass rush looks great on Airline. Can they carry it all over to the regular season? How rookie cornerback Paulson Adebo has made a name for himself playing all over the secondary, and the standout young linebackers that could make a difference in 2021.

Kwon Alexander makes his return to the New Orleans Saints roster, Ethan Wolf out with injury, Jake Pederson in for a visit, and more shuffles along the roster. Plus more news you need to know around Saints camp.

The New Orleans Saints are now just about two weeks through camp and the quarterback competition is still a tight one. On Today's Locked On Saints, Ross Jackson breaks down where each position of need is, and who has been performing well in those important roles. From Paulson Adebo and Ken Crawley to Payton Turner and Marcus Davenport, so many young players continue to make their names names.

Even though the QB battle is taking tine to separate, the Saints have some areas where they have been performing above expectation. One of those spots is the cornerback position where many like to diminish due to the available wide receivers. Here's why diminishing the corners on their matchups isn't an accurate depiction of the traits and positive play the DBs have shown.

The New Orleans Saints were back outside for Training Camp Day 6. On today's episode of Locked On Saints, Ross Jackson highlights the biggest stories including Keith Washington headed to injured reserve, the signing of Adonis Alexander, absences, and the first interception thrown by Jameis Winston in team drills. What's next as these QBs continue to look neck-and-neck in competition?

Starting on the offensive side, players like Ian Book, Cesar Ruiz, and Adam Trautman have good days. But in terms of the most impressive offensive player on day six, Jalen McCleskey takes the cake.

As for the defensive side, it's the young players again that are on the rise. Paulson Adebo, Payton Turner, Carl Granderson and more young defenders put on a show at Saints Camp day 6 with three interceptions combined in one-on-ones and team drills.

The New Orleans Saints return a fan favorite in linebacker Kwon Alexander. After less than eight months of recovery from his achilles injury, a nearly miraculous timeline, the athletic linebackers makes his return to the Big Easy. On a one-year deal worth up to $3 million, incentives are likely to be tied to playing time and performance. The Saints get away with a steal here getting Alexander back at no less than a $10 million discount from his original 2021 price tag.

But what does this mean for the young linebackers on the Saints roster? 2021 Second-round rookie Pete Werner, 2020 third-round selection Zack Baun, and more young linebackers have done their best to pick up the Saints defense as quickly as possible and have no disappointed in camp thus far. Does Kwon Alexander slot in ahead of them? Or could they still topple the returning second-level playmaker.

It will take a couple days before we see Kwon Alexander on the practice field, but with the fifth day of Saints training camp in the bag, there are a couple of important stories to follow. Wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith and cornerback Keith Washington both left practice early. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill had down days with pads going on for the first time. Now to see who bounces back on Wednesday.
